^ PS2 BC costs money while PS1 BC does not. Sony took out PS2 BC to save money but all PS3's can play PS1 games.

The PS1 can easily be emulated via software. The PS2's CPU can't be fully emulated, which is why the first 80GB PS3 only had partial B/C, and the graphics were almost impossible to emulate. The 40GB/current 80GB/160GB doesn't have the necessary architecture to run PS2 games.

I agree. When I see an item I want which costs at least $400, I make sure I know everything about it first.

Considering nobody reads forum threads past the first page(s) anymore, what makes you think they'd want to read specs written in fine print? ;) :P
but why wont it play ps2 games if it plays ps1?cloud345
the PS1 is handled by emulation in software, and that software has been developed back when Sony was creating the slim PStwo to compensate for the fact that those editions do not have the integrated MIPS CPU and RAM that the real ps1 used. Not perfect, but quite good. With ps2 compatibility on the ps3, Sony initially had both the PS2 EE+GS chips in the ps3 motherboard to handle BC duties. Then it was just the EE for the softBC units. Now, they don't have any hardware to reference to. While you would think that they should be able to write a software emulator that doesn't require this hardware at all by now (given all the bragging about the power of 't3h c3ll'), Sony either realizes they can't make an effective one yet, or can't be bothered (I'm voting on the latter). All that being said, just glad I do have a working 60gb model now.

They didn't take it out of the lesser version to save money. They did it to make money. If you buy a ps3 with ps2 compatibility you will obviously sell your ps2 and sony loses $100 on a new ps2 sale. So they made the ps3 with PS2 BC a $100 more to not lose out on any profits.

Ignore these other rude people here. Most people don't know they play PS1 games, because it lacks the ability to play PS2 games, so there would be confusion on that. But as we all know, there's some smarty pants waiting to say duhhh. But anyways, it does play PS1 games.
