Why even compare. I would never buy a phone over a $100. I am an insurance broker and my phones dont last me more than 6-8 moths. Hello, how much does a Blue Ray Disc Player cost alone.
The only thing sony got wrong was the release of the 20gb system and Microsoft got it wrong with he release of the core system.
i have an i phone which i paid $70 for, yea thats right 70 . an nothing the phone dose justifies a 600 price tag. the ps3 on the other hand has many high deff features, tyhat justify a 600 price tag, it dosnt just play games, it dose other things, and has other things built into it, that makes the system well over 1000, yet we only pay 500.
heres my i phone for proof

how did you get it for 70 bro, thats crazy (not that i want one, i perfectly more than content with my htc s710) but yea thats a crazy price.
Good point, I just would like to add one thing : Apple have not only reduced the price of the iphone, they revamped the "ipods" also, this will give an incentive to people still consider the older "ipod" models so the iphone does not cannibalize the "ipod" in terms of sales....I believe that Sony is holding the PS3 price due to the Blu Ray costs, if they drastically reduce the PS3 price you can bet the other Sony BR players will also come down to avoid the cannibalism effect. my 0.2 cents
Ok, since the the iPhone thing has been beaten to death (and than some) I'm going to move on to the major point here. I can kind of understand what you're getting at here. If Sony were to take a roll of the dice, lower the price further (and substain more of a hitto profit initially) they may be able to surpass their loss with a larger install base. If more systems were in more homes, there would be more people buying software/movies for the system. Thing is, that's kind of a big gamble on Sony's part, as, once again, they are already taking a hit to their corporate wallets at it's current price. Also, if they were to lower the price, they'd be stuck. If the price drop proved to be a bad idea they would be stuck losing more money still. If they were to knock the price back up, it would be a PR nightmare.
Generally speaking, they have very highly paid people in suits to figure these things out. People who crunch a whole lot of numbers and decide where's the right point between pulling [net] profit and what the market will bear. Chances are, right now, $500 for the 60g is right where they feel the most comfortable. Although, overall, the 360 has sold more units, they've also had a years head start. And simply put, Sony would be shooting themselves in the foot attempting to put it at a price that is more competitive to the Wii. Sony isn't out of the game yet, though, as it is still higher up on Amazon's bestsellers list than the 360.
1. apple iPhone was way overpriced.the PS3 was not...expensive yes...but overpriced for what it is/does...no.
2. they're coming out with a new iPhone already and a new iTouch so of course the older (and already outdated) model is getting a price drop. the fact they did it so soon isn't a good thing...that shows they're just trying to get rid of and have already moved on from the iPhone.
3. one is a phone (not that good a phone either) with some cool features. the other does damn near everything entertainment wise.

apple hasnt announced anything about a new iphone, not officially anyway. and no theyre not moving on from the iphone. and all of u just throwin out numbers about the iphone should check before u post anything. u had to sign a 2 year contract, not a 5 to 10 year contract like someone said. and the cheapest play u could get was $60, not $100, and that 60 included unlimited data.im not sayin the iphone is cheap, bc it definitely is not, but dont just throw out numbers to make the comparison look worse when u dont know what ur talkin about. and to the TC, yeah sony was already losin money on each ps3 sold even before this last price cut, so another price cut would make them lose even more money, while the iphone on the other hang, is still making almost a $200 profit on ever phone even after this latest price cut. so it was easier for apple to lower the price.
I'd assume Apple makes money off the iPhone, Sony already loses a lot of cash on every PS3. And just like everyone else said, $600 for a PS3 is a high but bargain price, $600 for a fancy phone is a rip offBenderUnit22not to mention that by japan standards the phone is like 3 generations old >.> i mean we have trouble getting signal in an elevator they get full bars in an under ground parking garage.. that of course is just one example
