But yeah I think it's because we love the violence, and their is such a focus on shooters, so I think you can make the conclusion yourself. Also games that are in the 12 or "E 10+" for Everyone criteria with the ESRB (North America's system) and under basically can't explore more darker/mature themes unless they are cleverly masked and somehow make it past the censors/raters. Frankly I think everyone is a bit paranoid. You got Europeans afraid of violence (-->Germany) then you got Americans who are afraid of a nipple slip or anything sexual.
Here's to hoping you're trying to tell me Shadows of the Colossus wasn't good enough because it didn't have the blood.

Actually it did have blood, the Colossi would spray blood when you stabbed them. It was colored a very dark almost brown red to match the look of the game. It's just hard to explore certain themes and stories without having some more mature aspects. It can take away some of the excitement and engagement.
