Sony is apparently very interested in keeping the PS2 as strong as possible for the value-oriented customer. Plus, it's the one system that they probably actually make money on (system sales, that is). Therefore, I can see why they'd want to take BC out of the PS3. No Emotion Engine = less money to make a PS3. And it keeps people buying PS2's.
Also, Tracy McGrady's lazy eye freaks me out.
My opinion to sony would be dont increase it by 40gb.... But just add backwards compatible to it. That way a $399 backwards compatible 40gb PS3 sound way betta! Than another 80gb on the shelve. My opinion though....
ive heard a rumor that sometime in Q4 there will be a System Update that makes the ps3 have backward compatibilityDante_May_Die
I don't think that would be possible. I think it would need more than a firmware update to provide BC to PS3's. Its going to need some sort of chip.

yeah i hear the same thing
hope its true cuz im stuck with a 40gb
soon to be 250gb but still im dieing to play my old ps2 games...but im not buying another ps2..(gave it to my cusin)
yh really sucks it doesn't have bc(duno why) but i hope it will when i get mine
and to the dude that sed "you should have gotten a 60GB at launch when you had youre chance" well that 60GB costed 599 bucks! thats why only few could get one! it was to expensive!
i think all sony should do now is not release that "new" 80gig but just add bc to the current 40gig, or atleast add bc to the 80GB!

I live on a very tight budget and managed to get a 60 gig system back in the first few months ($599.00) and have never regretted doing so. I have enjoyed the system a great deal from day one. So even if money is tight there usually something that can be done to purchase something nice from time to time, most people spend more than that in a single day during a vacation or in a week at the local bar in alcoholic beverages.

I read that somewhere they were going to put software emulation in the Q4 update but it is just a rumor shorely thats possible seeing that they use to use software emulation for a while on the 80Gb here in europe
The 20gb and the 60gb have full backward combality and 40gb and now the 80gb that cost $400 has no backward combality any1 know why cuz i would like to play my ps2 games on ps3 cuz i have alot of ps2 games n I dont have space to put the ps2. So any1 know WHYHeatMoe
Sony said they are trying to convert PS2 owners into PS3 owners and they did that by removing BC. Also they are trying to get PS3 software to sell more. Its a business move. You want to play PS2 games? Buy a PS2.
In order to drop the cost of the PS3 they had to take something out of it, which happend to be the PS2 hardware. They wanted the PS3 to be around the same price range as their competitors (Microsoft) so that is what they had to do. Honestly, if people wanted a PS3 with backwards compatibility then they should have gotten the 60 GB when they had a chance. There was a time when the 60 GB were sitting on the floors of stores waiting for someone to purchase them. And now they are in high demand because they were fully backwards compatible with PS2 games. All I have to say is, you guys had your chance.Import_Knight
They already took out the Emotion Engine and replaced it with Emulation software. Taking out software thats already developed won't save money unless they want to push people to continue to buy the PS2. Lucky for me I have the backward compatible 80 gig MGS4 bundle.
They will provide downloadable PS2 games soon. No one realised that, but I think that's the possible future.fnd461who wants to download a ps2 game for money that you already own? Sony is just being greedy just give us our backwards compatibility damnit!

That would be nice of Sony, but I think they have bigger fish to fry. R.I.P BC
