honestly, i don't know why gamespot gives low score on JRPGs.. though they're really good games... one thing is that.. Crisis Core.. this game doesn't deserve the score of 9.0.. duh?! what's the big deal about this game? the only reason this game is si admired by many is that it has a connection to FF7 and some of the characters..(that's all) the gameplay is steep... (really) the story is pretty much shallow.... and it gets boring and boring as you play along... because of its side quests which make the game really repetitive.. the stages are repetitive.. over and over again.. i think the reason this game is like a hot potato is because of it's CG cutscenes.. (All FF has) i think Valkyrie Profile Lenneth is better in terms of gameplay and unique system... then i just saw CRIMSON GEM SAGA.. i saw the gameplay and it seems okay but why did gamespot give it a low score? is it really that bad?

Crimson Gem Sega is a fun and excellent RPG. Gamespot can't review any game for that matter. Good site but for reviews it the worst place to go. I use Metacritic sicne they show you all the reviews, round hte score up, and make thier own reviews.

Well first of just so you know there is a demo. I will give you the link later on in the post. The demo is called Astonishia Story 2 Demo. THis is techincally a sequel to Astonishia story but the game has nothing to do with the first one so the name was changed in america. The demo will be in korean until you fight. It's part korean/english demo. The demo will give you a feel for the game and combat. Also I would give the game an 8.5. The game is like Mario and Luigi RPG for the nintendo handhelds. Here is a metacristic page of the game:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/psp/crimsongemsaga

and a link to the demos page:

http://www.pspdemohost.com/list.php?c=pcdown

Also not that you are better off going to the browser on your psp, serching psps demo center on google, go into site, downloads, find demo and download. It is easier because you download the demo directly to yourmemory stick.

JRPG's tend to appeal most to people who consider themselves fans of the genre. As a fan of the genre, you might see Valkyrie Profile as a deeper experience than the average critic/gamer, who might find its depth too daunting or inaccessible to the average gamer. Crisis Core may be a "shallow" JRPG, but its pacing and presentation probably offer a better, more rewarding experience to people less enthusiastic about committing themselves to an RPG on a portable system designed for short-burst gaming.

WARNING! Minor Rant Ahead! Read At Your Own Peril!

I think one of the big problems is what criteria should be used to rate a game. Each individual reviewer has their own criteria which can give completely different, yet equally valid reviews across many different sites.

As an example: Star Ocean: Second Evolution.

Should you compare this game to its predecessor First Departure, in which case it comes across as a much improved sequel, the same way Second Story improved on the SNES original?

Speaking of the originals, should you rate the game based on how much it has improved since its first (or in the case of some Final Fantasy games, latest) incarnation? Once again, it's been vastly improved with new voice work, bug fixes and overall streamlining the experience.

How about just rating it based on other RPGs in general? Does it stack up well against industry leaders like the Final Fantasys or Dragon Quests? Here personal preference becomes much more important. I would say it stacks up well with the pre-Playstation Final Fantasys and Dragon Quests with the exception of Final Fantasy 6 and Dragon Quest 4, which are still unequalled in my opinion.

Maybe the game should only be compared to other PSP games. Is this game put together as well as, let's say, God of War: Chains of Olympus? God of War doesn't give you nearly as many hours of entertainment as Star Ocean, but at the same time, God of War can provide a much higher quality of entertainment by keeping you moving and thinking as opposed to mindlessly grinding levels.

When you purchase a game and can see (even if you don't necessarily agree with) the points made in the review, the reviewer has done a good job. If the reviewer is outright lying, or using inaccurate information on a regular basis, then I don't think anyone would blame you if you completely disregarded their opinions.

Above all, don't be afraid to disagree or ignore a review. If the game is something you enjoy, then nobody else's opinion matters.

yeah yeah.. the game really sucks.. sad to say.. im not biased when giving a comment on a game but it's just that i don't find Crisis Core interesting.. except of course CG cutscenes.. ^_^ another game is phantasy star portable.. at first, i thought it's gonna be a hit because of many good feedbacks about the game.. but again.. another crap.. it's like STAR WARS KOTOR..^_^ you just play as the protagonist together with you cohorts.. and the story is far much worse than any JRPG now.. i mean.. you just simply walk around.. fight enemies.. level up.. defeat the boss to end the level.. that's it.. and the cycle repeats.. bahh... T_T come on... SONY.. IMPROVE THE GAME LIBRARY OF PSP... for the consumers' sake.. for my sake.. ahehe.. ^_^ and to those game companies... Please make a game that's very NEW and Intuitive.. don't just follow the traditional format.. just innovate.. i think GAMERS today don't want a game that's compels a player to level up to a certain level to continue...

ahh, ahehe.. nice.. i mean.. reviews don't matter at all.. it's up to the player if he/she finds the game interesting and appealing.. the review is just like a guide to what the game has to offer.. i think.. ^_^

I think Patapon did exactly what you said...INNOVATE. Patapon 2 is more of a refinement of Patapon rather than a full blown new game. It offers class customization and a wide variety of weapons and missions. I totally recommend it.

and other game sites give crimson gem saga good review scores. just look at the review page of it here at gamespot, and then on the lower right side, there's critic scores and as you see it, other sites gave crimson gem saga [8.* / 10], [4.* / 5], and so on. and here at gamespot, it gets a 5.0. boo hoo.

Look. The reason Crimson Gem Saga got low scores from Gamespot is because they really tend to look for the NEW in games and JRPGs especially. I personally agree with this stance, and if you look at it that way, CGS brought NOTHING new to the genre. I seriously felt like I have played the game before. All the game really is is a throwback to oldschool RPGs. Nothing more. Nothing less. And THAT is why the game was given an average rating from Gamespot, and from me as well.

right. but what about megaman9 for wii/x360/ps3? its really old school with 8-bit like graphix. but it got a score higher than 5.0 here.

Almighty-mints, the problem is that DS JRPGs that bring no new innovation receive higher points. Gamespot obviously plays favorites when it omes to the platforms. And they seriously hate the PSP. It's not even like they didn't like the game and they express that, but they often even make fun of PSP games. The review on Brave Story: A New Traveler is a disaster. The guy who did that should be spat in the face. Besides the fact that the game doesn't even deserve negative reviews, that dude takes every opportunity to make fun of it. I don't remember who did it but I seriously think that it's the most biased and unfair review ever, and I watch AVGN regularly, so it's quite a feat...
