I don't understand how this game is consider one of the very best in the fighting genre. As an avid player of fighters I don't understand how this street fighter is one of the recommended elite. With the newly released street fighter 4 reminded me of the mechanics of the game which is sweep kick as much as possible, try to rearrange someone input by jumping over them and use a jump kick - throw method if u can. Can anyone enlighten me on why this series took off like it did? I may seem harsh but in my opinion street fighter is not have good "checks and balances", deep enough nor technicial enough to hold a candle to Tekken or Virtua Fighter series.

It's considered "the best" because it simply has a very large appeal-factor. Its barrier to entry is almost non-existent, and thanks to its popularity, there's tons of competition for all levels of skilled players. That being said, it's not my favorite fighting game franchise at all. That crown belongs to BlazBlue.

i find the combat in sfa3 to flow better. sf4 is fun, but it seems like the combos fit together smoother in sfa3, it even had an input command adjuster so that you could change to "long" (iirc) and it would give you a bigger window for special moves

I always found SF to be the most accessible fighter (kind of like the CoD of fighting games)... and i guess that's appealing.

Because it was the first fighter and has maintained its appeal over the years and tournaments are still being played all over the world.

The game has little to do with realism (Hadoken? Really? Never seen one thrown in the UFC). But then again, side-stepping doesn't exactly explain away people with devil-bat wings or a leopard head...

:P

OK, look... the reason why any fighting game stays around, whether it's "Street Fighter" or "Tekken" or even "DOA" is variety with balance - A deal more easily said than struck when it comes to it. "Street Fighter" has been around the longest and has a huge core following, but the itterations of the game have not always been perfectly balanced to the point of being allowed as competition-level games. Fans will tell you that the success of any fighting game is to cater to the fans AND provide a level playing surface to see who's got the grit.

Long live "Street Fighter". And whatever you-all call your favorite, too... of course,

Op, you seem to think SF is a simple fighting game, but in reality, it is still challenging even for me who played SFII back in the 90's. Before Tekken, Virtua fighter, Soul Calibur, Blazblue, the SF series has delivered and is still doing a great job at that. I know that is your personal taste, but sometimes you just have to give credit where its due no matter how much you don't like it.

Everyone has there own opinion on what is the best fighter out there. Personally I love SF SSFIV to be exact. I think it has the balance that SF IV lacked a phenomenal character roster and wide variety of styles you can choose from with the fighters. Tekken 6 is a great game and I play that as well but it is a very different type of fighter in its style and 3D renderings. Some people like the 2D stlye fighters where it makes it harder to flee you opponent. Some like tekken and virtua fighter 5 for its 360 degree movement it s matter or preferance. I like the 2D style better SF and the SNK games like Fatal Fury and KOF series of games. Not to say Tekken virtua fighter, DOA Or Soul calibur games arent good cause they are but they are different. Realism doesnt apply to any of the above games if you want real fighting go buy the UFC 2010 game which is more of a simulation type fighter.

UFC and "Fight Night" are about the only "realistic" games out there when it comes to fighting. Most of my fights in FN4 go ten rounds and a decision because it's about pacing and scoring points, picking your moments, not flailing away and hoping for a connection. If you want reality-based fighting, those two titles are it, bar-none.

Tekken? You mean that button mashing jugglefest they call a fighting game? Once you get a launch hit, the match is pretty much over. Mash mash mash before the guy hits the ground. Hits that keep him in the air and crouch when he finally hits the ground and keep pressing the kick button while he's down while that person actually has to wait three seconds to even get up.

Every fighting game has it's flaws...

lol...tekken.. its like the gameplay revolves around "who can launch the other first?" instead of the actual fighting.

It's well-liked because it's entertaining, fun to watch, and easy to get into. Neither Tekken 6 nor Street Fighter are perfectly balanced, and neither game pretends to be. For Street Fighter, as for Tekken, mix-ups and spacing are important elements of play. Fighting for sweeps is one element of play, but if your fight level is still at the level where you can win with just sweeps and cross-ups, then you're not very good and neither are your enemies. That is not the end-all or be-all of SF play. SF4's claim to fame is the introduction of Cancels, probably borrowed from the Guilty Gear series. A sweep isn't going to do much if your enemy times a Focus Attack against it - he'll absorb the hit and do a counter hit that crumples you - which then opens you up to a very damaging combo. It's a nice basic technique, but it's not always going to work.

Tekken 6 is sick. Im not even that good same as most players online. Only a few elite players can really own but they play in different lobbies.

So its great most matches are well balanced. And button bashing will get you knocked out.

I think it's due to Street Fighter's history I disagree with people saying Street Fighter IV is the best fighting game of all time I still think Street Fighter II Turbo on SNES is the best then I'd say Tekken 2..

I guess nobody agrees with me about SF big attention to technique. But then again, I know this place isn't the most enthusiastic about its technical fighters but rather its casual fighters such as Tekken and to an extent, Soul Caliber. People complaining about the lack of side-stepping in SF must get owned online so often. Like I said, I only know Blazblue is on par with SF in terms of technique

This is almost facepalm worthy. I'm not saying SSB is a bad game, I love it too, but its not really considered a fighter like SF and Blazblue, why? Lack of technique. You can block, you can attack, thats pretty much it. The reason why SF is so popular is because its accessible (but not as accassible as SC or Tekken due to the combos) yet it also appeals to the hardcore fighter fans. If you youtube SF videos, most of you probably wont have a clue whats going on because the combos happen so quick.

Because SF revolutionized how games (not just fighters) were played. There are so many games that have come out since SFII that have taken elements from that gameplay... pretty much any 2-D fighter since has in one way or another copied SFII. I remember when SFII came out in the arcades... it was AMAZING! SSFIV is carrying the torch very well. The only fighter I've played that even came close to SF's goodness is the early MK series, namely MK2 & MK3... but even MK used several of SFII's technique.

There's something you must understand. Back before any of us even had a Super Nintendo, seeing Street Fighter 2 in the arcades was one of the most exciting things in the world. Watching people throw fireballs, seeing Dhalsim's feet stretch far across the screen, this WAS the game that started it all. The fact that the Street Fighter franchise in intentionally keeping this game nostalgic, while offering a superbly deep fighting system, it only make sense that Street Fighter is and will always be the King of all fighting games.

It's accessible, and it's an old franchise. Hell, I can remember when Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were the only two fighters worth playing. So many arcade competitions...

SF is pretty deep. There's a reason why it's always the main event at fighting tournaments like EVO and SBO. I suggest you go to a tournament and see how deep i is yourself and try to challenge people who goes to evo. I thought i was good and got smoked by nobodies (bystanders) at Evo events. Third strike is still popular and so is SSF2T. Consider this, i beat my brother 100+ times in a row at CVSSNK2 (I have save data to prove it). I couldn't beat anyone that i challenged when I went to EVO 09. These aren't even the Pros that i played against, just bystanders. The difference in skill was unimaginable. It's more than just "sweep kick as much as possible".

P.S. 3rd strike is the best.

What's so realistic about fighting a kung-fu panda bear, a dude with devil wings and horns, or a life-sized pinnochio thingy? I think most fighting games have VERY little to do with realism, don't you? That said, I like 2D fighters better because it puts more focus on the actual fight instead of dodging attacks. SSFIV has a ton of great moves and combos that you can learn and be a real master, but the basics are still effective enough that most entry level fighters still have a chance. SSFIV's artstyle is unique and quirky and most characters are quite different from one another (except for an obvious few) which gives you a very large, diverse roster to choose from. Plus... SFII is probably one of the most played fighting games of all time!

sf an't no button masher, and jump high kick sweep will get you no were,, this is why you dont like it.. sf takes alot of skill. Alot/ its like playing a game of chest. just about each move can be countered, a combo slep can mean the end for you, alot of people play charaters like patteren's , once youknow there patteren down you can punish that player because you will know what he or she will do before he/she does it(scrub player). theres also ways to trick your oppent into thinking your going to do a move but you dash back and they;ll pull off the charaters counter and will fail. aww... i guess what im getting at is,,,, this an't a button masher lol

I like street fighter but I do not think its as balance and as technical as people make it out to be. If u call throwing several light punches, then a medium kick, to a hadoken or a throw technical then be my guess. I'm trying to illustrate once players master these combos they use little to no variation, jus the combo they know at hand. A fighter has to have a mix up and strategy, some of the things in street fighter seem like pure glitches (light kicks/punch/ throw as an example). I enjoy playing street fighter but i don't think it deserves to be one of proclaim "best fighters".

Well, firstly it was out before your Tekken and Virtua Fighter series. Second, if you grew up in the early 90's when arcades existed then your question wouldn't exist. No other game at the time had crowds of people lined up with quarters to take on the winner. Plain and simple.....best fighter ever and no other fighter will ever be able to capture that.

If you really believe this game is so simple let me know when I can find you online with it, I don't mind some easy wins occasionally. With that being said I've noticed when I play on PS3 instead of 360 the competition seems a little easier.

Love it or hate it, you have to admit, the fighting genre today would all be dead if it werent for SF4. I can sure as hell promise you BB, Tekken, VF, or SC werent the one that revived it. Nope, SF gave birth to fighters back in the 90's and brought it back to life today. It is the only fighter (unless you count SB, which i dont) that was able to maintain a scene after the genre dwindle down to nothingness. Thanks to tourneys like EVO, SF was able to stay alive while others just faded away. That is why SF is crowned the greatest compared to the competition.

If you really believe this game is so simple let me know when I can find you online with it, I don't mind some easy wins occasionally. With that being said I've noticed when I play on PS3 instead of 360 the competition seems a little easier.

Love how u took a shot at the people who play it on the PS3 version pal, real bold of u. Take ur agenda eslewhere
