I don't know if you remember my last topic about me opening the ps3 cause i was just curious. I wanted to know if it collected a lot of dusts over two years and I found out that it wasn't really a big mess to clean. A month later, I got the ylod when it was still on after playing Demon's Souls. I switched to SF4 and 5 min later I got the red blink or yellow light of death. I couldn't get the disc out, so I decided to take the darn thing apart again to see what went wrong. Last time, I just cleaned so I didn't really do a complete disassembly, but this time I got to the motherboard. The thermal paste was completely dried, so I assume that was the cause it. why did it really dry up? Well, the more you use it, the more you cook the paste. If you notice like a lag in gameplay and maybe frequent game freezes, then maybe that's a sign that something wrong with your cpu or gpu. The paste helps the cpu and gpu dissipate heat through the heat sink. If the cpu or gpu continues to do work, then the increase in heat due to work will cause the metals in them to melt, separate, disconnect, etc. We also have to take into account that many do not properly let the system to cool down. Can you avoid this? It's hard to avoid and eventually all the 60gb launch consoles are going to fall for the infamous ylod. Even if you do manage to find a way to fix it, you will probably have to repeat the process again in the near future. So...what about the slim?? It's kinda too soon to say cause we don't know how well Sony structured it this time, but I can say for sure that no electronic lasts forever. Any suggestions? Like I said, nothing lasts forever, so I would recommend getting the latest model just to last you another glorious 5 years (just a guess) of gaming. I traded my 60gb and got a slim. Note: BBC is just going to hold you back, so you gotta learn how to let it go and move "onwards."

I have a newer 80GB ps3. Not the slim. How long will it last? Do all ps3's have the paste? I play my ps3 a lot so this is why I am concerned. I have had my ps3 freeze before.

all cpus have thermal paste of some sort

sometimes freezes are due to software glitch
unless it freezes alot i probably wouldnt worry to much

I guess at least 4-5 years for 80gb since they use a more energy efficient cell, but no more than 10 years.

@corb77

sigh...give up on bbc. At least , you can play playstation 1 games. Do you seriously expect one console to be that different from another one, especially when you are referring to the same or similar model type?

well, you can still fix the blue ray drive as long as it has nothing to do with the lens. well, if cleaning the lens doesn't help, then it needs a replacement.

Yea i think you may well be right about all launch 60GBs eventually failing.I had my launch 60 for approx 2 years before deciding to part with it in March 2009,mainly cos i was reading more and more reports of YLOD-especially on 60s.

So in september 2009 i managed to get a really good deal on a brand new 80GB,and dont really miss the B.C. of my older 60GB cos i now got an original Phat Ps2 to play all my PS2 games on

Might as well tell my story. here goes guys. I got a 60GB launch model (at launch). Treated it really well (cleaned it well, lots of ventilation). A Year into my ps3s life i started noticing weird noises and knowing about the YLOD, i knew it was comming. Sure enough, in the middle of a match of PES, BAM, YLOD. Then i had a few options and heres what I did.

Firstly i called sony and they were like because your 2 months out of warrenty, you have to pay 150 pounds to fix it. On that PS3 i would get a 3 month guarantee. I thought they were joking because that is a disgrace. 150 for a 3 month refurbished ps3. when i could get a new one for about 270 pounds at the time.

That 3 month one would 100% break so i went with plan B, fix it myself. After watcing several videos on youtube and doing lots of research, i found out a reflow was in order. I bought a 3 pound thermal paste and a heat gun (which i later returned) and cracked that baby open. 2 things i noticed straight away, no dust at all and that the dissassembly was relatively straight forward.

When i got to the CPU, was the TC said, the thermal paste was cooked to a crisp. 2 hours later, the beast was put back togeather and working like a charm. As i knew the YLOD fix didnt last long i sold it for 150 pounds and bought and 80GB version for 270 pounds. Guess what, 6 months into its lifecycle, im hearing those same noises. Brillaint. Things i have learnt: The YLOD is not really ANY fault of the user.

I see a lot of things said on forums like 'you dont ventilate it well' or 'you never turn it off' but thats all bull and i find it rediculous that sony charge for it unlike MS who aknoledge the problem and fix it for free.

If this PS3 breaks, no chance im ever buying a new one, sony have already got enough money from me.

Wow....very informative post TC.My launch 60gig died about a month ago, I called sony and they sent me the shipping box. I sent it off and was amazed that I got the repaired/refurb console back in less then a week. Guesswhat...?? It started freezing up just after "20"minutes of gameplay "AND" the system wouldn't turn on using the PS3 controller. Now, you ''KNOW" I was pissed but I just called sony and sent the system back to get repaired or whatever the heck they do with the console. I'm giving sony a 2nd chance so I went out and got the 250g slim. I had made plans to get a 2nd PS3 for my bedroom months ago but I wasn't going to do it until spring. I'm still kinda pissed but just as you said, that's the chance you take wit all electronic devices.

Why people complain about YLOD?

I guess I never did answer that question. It's because consumers expect "consoles" to last longer after paying so much for it. they would say that older consoles were better because it lasted longer.

So you had to start Demon's Souls all over again? A ****ing nuisance that the game is copy protected. My original PS3 lasted 13 months until the BR drive died- the refurb has lasted the exact same amount of time and is running fine. If it YLOD's I'll just get a 250GB slim

Yeah, I got me a 250 slim yesterday right before new years. The paste is just one factor of ylod because I believe that games (even ports) that cause your launch console to work hard can also cause it.

I've got one of the first models (80 GB) that I just recently got for free from a friend (who is on his 3rd PS3 now). He just gave it to me because he thought it was broken, though I took it and fit a new 500 GB seagate HDD and it runs great. It does seem however that the newer models that came out after, that my friends own, have all experienced problems freezing or the YLOD.

My friend has played almost non-stop for a year and half on this system that I now have (him being a crazilly addicted COD online nut).

Is the heatsync better or thermal paste in the older models than in the newer ones?

I got a 20gb and a 60gb at launch and they've both worked flawlessly. They both get played tons, about an average of 3 hours per day. I just recently sold my 60gb to my brother in law Dave and his wife Carolyn since they wanted BC. My sis in law that lives with me got a 40gb for her bedroom about 1.5 years ago and I got a 80gb to replace my 60 gb that I sold to him. All systems have worked flawlessly.

I have a nephew Ben that got a 60gb at launch and it has always worked flawlessly. I have a brother in law John that owns 2 40gb for about 2 years now and they work flawlessly. My wifes brother Chris got a 80gb about a year ago and it has always worked flawlessly.

I got a 360 about 8 months before the PS3 came out. The HDD failed on it first and about 3 months after that it got RRoD. I got MS to send me a working one and I ebayed it.

My brother in law John that switched to PS3 with the 2 40gb PS3s had 2 360s that had probs ranging from sticking discdrives to disc scratching to RRoD. He had 5 360 failures in all before he decided to switch. He also had 5 360 controllers stop working properly.

So with my experiences PS3s don't fail and 360s do.

I've figured out some things that people might be doing to their PS3 that make them fail that they shouldn't be doing.

1. Using the switch in back to shut off their systems when they should be using the controller or power button on the front of the system. Using that switch is like shutting a PC down by unplugging it. The PS3 was designed to shut down in a particular sequence and it can't when the power is instantly cut. Switch should only be used when the other 2 ways wont shut it down.

2. Downloading a system update and the internet connection fails at a point when it's crucial that it doesn't. Or the person interferes with it and sends the OS of the PS3 into an unworkable state.

3. The system get interfered with while saving games or other operations when it says "do not turn off the power while saving".

4. Improper ventilation/and or vents being blocked by dust build up and other objects. Or very little to no cross ventilation, like the PS3 needs the front of it to face an opening and the back to face an opening. Not put in a place where there's only a limited opening only at the back. I had My first PS3 in this type of situation and I noticed the fans get really loud after a while so I put it where it was open in front and in back of it and it has never gotten loud ever again.

5. People mess with their PS3s in ways they shouldn't; dropping it while moving it, installing things on it improperly, moding it etc.

I believe that most YLoDs are caused by one or more of these things.

My 80gb PS3 "died" after two months or so ;(

It wasn't the ylod but the more common disk drive problem (PS3 stops reading disks)

It seems to me that PS3's Hardware is not much better than 360's

That's false, PS3 is 10.2%, the Wii is 9.6%, and the 360 is 48%. This was published in Game Informer Mag and other places.

99% of my game freezes are due to the game itself. I've yet to have a well programmed game actually freeze on me.

But, if what you say is true (about the paste) then why would Sony rely on such a flawed method? I would've figured the chips were cooled by those (forgot what they're called) "block things with coolent fluid" similar to what we use for PCs.

I got that YLOD crap in 2008. But I didn't want to take it apart because I couldn't actually find anything on it to fix it myself and even though it was still BS paying to replace a defective PS3, $190 was a lot better than paying a new console price (especially at the time).

But I didn't want to take it apart because I couldn't actually find anything on it to fix it myself and even though it was still BS paying to replace a defective PS3, $190 was a lot better than paying a new console price (especially at the time).

the blocks you mention are heat sink pads and yes the paste does dry out and crack i seen it myself on my 60gb

Thanks for the heads up.

But yeah, I think it's a load of crap paying for a $752 console (at the time) that isn't actually built to be stable and last. Paste or not.

Yes I think are selling more cosoles than PS3 due to the rrod. Plus wasnt it a little obvious to ban 1 million 360's a week before mw2 came out. They new people would rush out to buy another 360. They werent going anywhere else with all the time invested on Live. Along with M$ paid for the advertisement with this game, as SONY did for AC2. So they probably told Activision to botch the PS3 version so all the numbers would be on Live. They botched the trophies, sent out a patch, then that botched the online completely for a week. M$ wanted all the numbers on Live to help it look better.

I don't know about your "conspiracy theory". But I do know that IW doesn't know an online game from it's own arse as far as I'm concerned.

this YLOD seems to be getting more and more and by the sounds of it people are also getting lots of screen freezing and the PS3 not reading disk...think i'm going to invest in another console... ps3 is asking for way to much money for something that breaks after a year.... not good sony what happened...

the launch consoles were expensive and people still bought it just cause it had a lot to offer. people were also afraid that it would get discontinued. there is just no way in hell to determine if the console is going to have any problems in the future. my concern is that some people have different "opinions" about the situation. some think that is still worth keeping a 60gb ps3 cause nothing wrong has happened to it yet or it can easily be fixed, but can you guarantee that is going to last you for another period of time. My suggestion is that if the console is acting funny, then it's time to get a new one. I thought I was lucky cause I manage to trade my fat ps3 for 250g slim and just pay a litte extra. Some people are just "lucky" that their consoles are still working, but they cannot simply deny the chances. heck, I had mine for about 3 years and I took well care of it. I gave the thing a lot of ventilation space. I only played like 3 times a week for a couple hours a day and I still got the ylod.
