1080i is a higher resolution but it is interlaced. That means that it only draws every other horizontal line on the screen where 720p is progressive. It draws every line on the screen. The result is a much smoother picture of things moving at higher speeds. 1080i is good for still shots and slower paced games, but not for movies and faster games such as FPS.

people say that because 720p tvs are cheaper than 1080i tvs, and they feel they have to defend their purchase. If 1080i didn't look better, why would anyone have spent time developing it?

Actually, the cheapest tvs are 1080i since all CRTs do that resolution. It is a well accepted fact that 720p is the best resolution for gaming, and 1080i tends to be better for slower movies. All next-gen movies are recorded in 1080p which has both lower formats beat. The reason your 1080i set (which is probably pretty low end) looks better than your 720p set (which had to be even more low end) is due to the hardware and has nothing to do with the resolution. Your accusations that people are defending their purchase is poor, and you should try having a tiny bit of knowledge before making the same type of statement and just embarrassing yourself.

I have a 42" hitachi ultravision director's edition plasma. I don't see how I've embarrased myself by simply stating an opinion, and you seem to be strung pretty tightly on this topic. Maybe the best logical next step is to talk to your doctor about xanax.

Actually the cheapest sets are the ones that only support 720p. Any newer set (less than two or three years old) that support a max resolution of 1080i will also support 720p. Saying one is better than the other is absurd. It just depends what you're using it for.

720p was introduced because it's better than 1080i. Back in the early 90's it was decided that 1080p should be the resolution of HD but because of "bad" TV tubes TV makers could only put out 1080i TVs and to make up for that 720p. This is also why 1080p is refered to TRUE HD. At the same time the bandwidth needed to call a internet connection "broadband" was decided so it could recieve 1080p video.

1080i is interlaced meaning its 540 line then another 540 lines seconds later, whereas 720p you get 720 lines at the same time, and 1080p is 1080 lines at the same time

on something as small as 24" I don't think you'll notice much of a difference between 720p/1080i or 1080p.  1080p is more noticeable on a larger screen 50" and up!

1080i is not more expencive than 720p, 720p does look better than 1080i in fast moving games, and if people where defending their purchase you'd hear stuff like "720p is way better than 1080p for gameing" all the time, and they spend time developing 1080i so they could sell cheap HDTVs.

Put simply, 720p is considered by many to be the sweet spot of gaming. I don't notice much of a difference between 720p and 1080i, but I'm also using a 30-inch hdtv. 1080p ought to be a better picture (in theory), but remains an elusive goal because there's a trade-off...it requires considerably more processing power to produce it. Because of this gaming images use fewer objects and images, making it easier to process. Anyone with an older graphics card on their pc has run into this same issue and will know what I'm talking about. So you'll get a higher res picture, but probably less complex than it could be at a lower resolution.

What if I'm sitting 3-5 feet away from it?

Let's say I were to watch a blu-ray movie on it will it still be displayed in 1080p, or will it downgrade to 480p due to the lack of screen size?  Noob question

720 P better for fast moving viewing; video games and action movies. 1080i is better for slower, more colorful images. Ummm, a really boring movie w/ lots of scenery. 1080p is the best of both worlds. Toshiba has a 62 inch 1080p DLP. Talk smack all you want about rear projection, but it can be found for $1500 and has a beautiful picture.

not quite... if you were comparing similar resolutions, then yes, but that is not the case here. 1080i is 1920x1080i and 720p is 1280x720p; so 1080i actually does have more resolution, even if only half of the 1080i lines are being displayed at once. therefore, in low motion scenes, 1080i will look superior. however, 720p is better for high motion scenes, so in most cases, 720p is better, but not by much.

Look if your t.v. supports only 720p and 1080i then it can't even do proper 1080i as the reslution of your t.v. i most likely 1280*720,therefore if you choose 1080i on your 360/ps3 then your actually getting 1080i (1980*1080) downscalled to fit your 1280*720 (720p), so it actually winds up as 720i,this is why on 95% of HDTV that only support 720p and 1080i that 720p is the best, becasue that's the best resolution i supports, however if you bought your HDTV a few years ago then you might of nabbed your self an HDTV crt 1080i which actually used to have resolutions of 1920*1080,but no one makes them anymore,so just stick with 720p if your t.v .only supports 720p and 1080i.

But anyway,1080p is the future and is so much better than 720p is you sit close enough to your HDTV,1080p is not overrated...it's awesome.

.... if your t.v. supports only 720p and 1080i then.....it most likely 1280*720,therefore if you choose 1080i on your 360/ps3 then your actually getting 1080i (1980*1080) downscalled to fit your 1280*720 (720p)......

Great, great point.  Look at these hdtv's that support 720p/1080i, their native resolution is waaaaaay below 1980*1080 so they can't do 1080i properly.

Native resolution is only 1366 x 768:

In fact, every HDTV on this page that supports 720p and 1080i have native resolutions waaaaaay below 1980*1080:

I have been looking at a Samsung LE32R72BX 32" High Definition LCD TV.  However on the product spec's it does not state anything about 720p, 1080i or 1080p.  I was wandering if anyone has any info about this that could help.

Thank's in advance.

1080p resolution is the best, better than 720p or 1080p. You can watch and play games from a PC monitor, but it won't as satisfying as playing on the big screen.

cant really tell a difference to be honest with you, whichever one u think looks better go with, 720 P is supposibly EQUIVALENT to 1080i i personally prefer 720p because GoW looks weird on my tv with 1080i but i do recomend 1080i for every other game
