I realize that 40 gigabytes of space may run out real quickly and that more space may be required for future PS3 titles. So my question stands.

the 40gb ps3 is a joke, less ports no mem stick readers, so little space(and why would i waste my time and go to a shop and waste more money on a hardrive...and what will i do with this 40gb...hmmm throw it away) and now backward compatibility...i might aswell just buy a nintendo wii....and be happy with it^^topic^^

The 40 GB is aimed at those who simply want the PS3 for BluRay movies and playing games. If you are into the whole Memory Stick thing, lots of photos and videos and such, then Id say the 80 GB is the best choice. I persoanlly bought a 40 GB simply because I dont use my game systems for things like pictures, videos and such. That is what a PC is for!!!kungfuchaos
They shoudl release a 10GB PS3 just for peopele who want a blu-ray player and maybe play the odd game
Go to Best Buy an buy a larger laptop SATA hard-drive for your PS3 if you're worried about lack of space.
I have the 60GB console and have over 40GB of free space. I have lots of demos and videos.

I don't believe they even make 10GB hard drives anymore. In fact I know they don't sell them at newegg.com. The smallest they have is a 40GB.
The only difference between the 40 and 80 PS3 is the Memory Stick slots, a couple more usb ports, 40GB of space, and BC. And all can be added to it except the BC, so I don't know why anyone would complain. If you want BC get the 80. If you don't care about BC and want to save money for now and just add on the other stuff as needed, go for the 40.

I could care less about playing PS2 games on my PS3. Thats the whole point of buying a next-gen console. 40 gigs is plenty of space considering game saves aren't that big. Why do you need more than two USB ports anyway? There is a thing called blue-tooth that eliminates those ports. With that said, I'm very happy with my 40gig, and the extra $100 I would have paid for 40 more gb of HDD space, I can get double that amount from any store that sells HDD's.

Tottally agrree with you. I have a 40 gig ps3 and I am tottally happy with it. The memory card things are preety useless since I use memory usb sticks and I have a transflash SD so those features are useless. I don't care about the usb ports either, I just bought it to play ps3 games and watch blu-ray. Maybe the hardrive is kind of small for me and I only have 15 gig left. But with an 80 gig I would still run out of space eventually since I have hi-def movies on it. The hardrives are cheap now and instead of buying a new ps3 just upgrade to a 200gig hard drive or something similar. It will solve all your problems. I am getting a 250 one soon and it will solve any game preinstalling problems for a long, long time.[QUOTE="newfg311"][QUOTE="planbfreak4eva"][QUOTE="nervmeister"]the 40gb ps3 is a joke, less ports no mem stick readers, so little space(and why would i waste my time and go to a shop and waste more money on a hardrive...and what will i do with this 40gb...hmmm throw it away) and now backward compatibility...i might aswell just buy a nintendo wii....and be happy with it^^topic^^

The poster who claims the 40gig is a joke needs to realize how useless many of his PS3 features are.
And besides, my PS3 runs cooler than yours. Deal with it.

Think you should've mentioned, ps3 games. Its surprising the amount of people who don't realize, how much better playing ps2 games on the ps3 is graphically. For starters, you have a recharageable wireless controller. Then you have games smoothed out and upscaled so your tv doesn't have to do it. Most tv upscalers aren't that great.
Ledgendary Fox how did you get your external hard drive to work with your ps3? I have an 80gb ps3 and have 2 external hard drives. A disk go and a seagate. Neither work with the playstation. I have tons of mp3's, jpegs, a various video format videos and it says there are no files in each catagory. Never tried saving data on them.msharki
I know what you mean i have a buffalo 250 external and i plugged it in to my ps3 and it said no vids and pics. what you have to do is play with it for a while i had to go to the pictures and video section on xmb and hit triangle then go into another folder and triangle again and show all and a few more things its tricky but it should work. Same thing happened with one of my SD cards.
