Will I understand MGS4?

I never EVER played any other MGS games, will I understand it? Should I still buy it? Should I skip the cutscenes if I didn't play any other MGS games?

I would recommend downloading MGS1, and playing through that..

but if not, just look up the stories online, and you should understand enough to know what's going on

A good summary from wikipedia, and/or the MGS wikia will help. After reading abit, I was interested in the conspiracy in *spoilers* Snake Eater. I was like, ohhh, thats why Big Boss went kinda physco.

you will understand it no problem BUT mgs4 has tonssssssssssssssss of references to previous games. What you will think is something random had tons of meaning from previous games. Good idea by poster above about reading about previous games but still. The game either way is amazing.
