Yes, they work fine in 1080i. I just bought my PS3 two days ago and just plugged in my PS2 component cables and it worked just fine. I have however, no idea on upconverting DVD's with it though, but i wouldn't see why it wouldn't at least show up better then in a regular dvd player.

I have been using the PS2 component cable on my PS3 for a while now and it will do a great job of upconverting games and DVDs as well. I have tried both HDMI and component cable connections with the system and there really is no differance so far. It is setup on a 32 inch Sony Bravia LCD TV that supports up to 1080i. Hope this helps.

I have some PS2 cables and I run 1080p and it works fine.

You can upscale DVDs to HD on the PS3 using HDMI since the 1.80 update.

Yes, you can use PS3 cables acctually there was a cnet Video made on tricks that you can do with the ps3 and old ps2 stuff :P
