As for the updates they add patches and extra features to your console. The 2.0 is suppose to be the next big update with a lot more features. Also HOME is comening out soon possibly with 3.0 update (although there could be some small things from HOME already in the latest updates).

firmware is updated quite often (about once a month), it brings corrections or new capabilities for the PS3 (like using your PC as a server, better handling of friends, upscaling DVDs and PS2/PS1 games ...), in Europe we began with 1.80 and now we're 1.93. Update 2.00 is rumored to have XMB (see under) access during games (allowing to play your music during a game) and other things ...

XMB means cross media bar, it's the operating system for the PS3 (like Windows for PC) : on the horizontal line you have the main categories (music, game, internet ...) and when you're on it the vetical line indicates the main options

Its always sweet when you get a new system, but for some reason it seems extra sweet when you first open your PS3 and hook it up for the first time. Congrats!!!
