I woke up this morning and my brother told me my PS3 wasn't working. Icheckedit out and I have the the YLoD. So from what I understand I essentially have to send it to Sony and pay $150. Anyone know if there is any other option? If I do send it anyone know how long it takes? I assume I will lose all of my saves, right? But will i keep trophies and such since they are linked to my PSN? Any knowledge on the YLoD would beappreciated.

you might want to see if a video games etc store around your area, when my PS3 stopped reading games, sony was going to charge me $150 bones to fix it, but video games etc only $100, that is until i got gamestop to trade it out for a new one, so i just kinda lucked out, sucks for you though sorry man

Doesnt work, each HDD is formated to each PS3, meaning he would have to format the HDD to work on his new PS3, and still lose all the saves.

i wouldn't see why not, although i dont know exactly what entails someone getting the YLOD, but if a local store advertises that they can fix systems they should be able to fix everything on that system

Why not just hook up the old PS3 HDD to your computer and copy the files over. Then when the new PS3 arrives, take out it's HDD, hook it up the computer and and copy the saves onto it?

Or can this be done... I've never tried it but it seems possible, unless a computer cannot see the files on the HDD.

The mod should have let you know that while he's correct, the other option is to back up the files on your HDD by using a flashdrive or memory stick. Back 'em up, send it in, and when it returns copy the files back onto the ps3. :)

As far as I can tell he doesn't have access to anything on his system at all anymore, so he couldn't back up his save games anyway.

geh... This is always a constant fear of mine on all systems.

I have had the ylod, and its because i spilled water in it.

when the water dried, it worked again.

Smart ps3. The Yeloow light doesnt kill the ps3,

it is an indicator that the system has run into a major error while trying to function, and therefor abborted it. It doesnt effect any specific sku.

and if you really don't want to send it in,

go to a sony store, buy the same model ps3, and do the old switcheroo.

That way your not hurting an individual business, the maker of the console which is faulty.

if they dont carry your sku, go elsewhere and deal with the guilty conscience.

I've said it many times before: the phrase "of death" is unique to MS products that fail. Remember the blue screen?
