Good luck with your lawsuit. Hope it works out for you.

I agree that a 1 year warranty isn't long enough, but caveat emptor. I knew when I bought my PS3 that the warranty was for only one year. It will suck if it breaks since it is out of warranty. I had two PS2's get DRE's when they were just out of warranty. If my PS3 develops disc read errors I'm going to flip.

All of these broken PS3 threads lately are starting to make me nervous.

Screw sony out of money... yeah...

That's an awful plan.

You go to a lawyer and you'll pay well over $150...

Nerosage

Jesus, like I said before, read my full post before you criticise me. I already have a lawyer, who is doing it for FREE because she's a member of my family and as fed up about this issue as I am. Plus, even if I did hire a lawyer for cash, Sony would have to pay my legal fees if I won.

Doesn't YLOD mean to let you console cool down? If so, all you need to do is stay off it for a couple hours.

I wish it was that simple. I tried restarting it a million times, even hours and days later. It didn't even feel hot when it died, and it was only on for fifteen minutes, and it is in a very well ventilated area, has plenty of space and I keep most of the dust out.

hey man,

I respect your decision over suing Sony, because i just got the yellow light of death. I researched it and realized that only 20gb and 60gb are at risk because we have an older technology meaning that our system are at risk at every moment of getting this hardware failure compare to the 80gb and 40gb who have a new technology meaning CPU and ect... So everybody with a 60Gb and out of warranty eventually your time will come so it would be better to act together now rather than later. For everybody who says to send your playstation back to sony here are the other risks:

1) you lose all your hard drive so everything you worked for is gone.

2) you pay 150$ for the service and your guarantee only last 90days...

3) the risk of getting the yellow light is as high meaning that you may have to send it for a second time with another fee of 150$...

I am trying to get like everybody with a 60GB and 20GB to come together and get this sorted out, if you really care about your playstation and the amount of money you spent on it then feel free to reply and let me know how you are willing to help because i ain't going to spend no god damn money after having spent 600$ on this playstation 3!

Let the war on sony begin.

Not sure what's going on now with this issue since the last post was a month and a half ago, but I just got the yellow light of death and I definitely don't want to pay the 150$ for them to send me a refurbished. I have the 60gb. I would really like to see Sony extend their warranty for this issue like Microsoft did. I realize that this problem is much smaller in terms of affected consoles than the 360's, but it would be great if we were helped from getting screwed over by being early buyers.

Man, I get a chuckle ever time I read what lengths some people will go to just to save a little cash. Sometimes it's just worth sucking it up and shelling out the green.

For anyone with experience in this field I do have a few questions. 1) Is it in fact only the certain GB's that are prone to this YLOD??? ^This is important to me as I have a 40gb^ 2) Are these PS3's used to play movies? 3) Are they ran for long periods or put in cabnets? I know my PS2 has been a trooper (and my PS1 for that matter), the only thing really I did was what was stated before, I always kept it out in the open so it could breath, and NEVER EVER played movies on it. Maybe a little corny but I just felt that playing movies was just too hard on it, plus I mean who doesnt have a DVD player so its just as easy, also on the PS2 the "Blue" disc's were supposedly causing a problem as well, which I never played any of those on it. I would say I didnt play for long periods but, if I dont have to work tomorrow and I just got a new game, pssh i'm gonna be geekin. LOL But needless my PS2 is still kicking and I dont think it was the FIRST one out but it was fairly new, Bouncer and Silent Hill 2 were among my first games and they were new, and I played the crap outta that thing. Please keep us updated, it would be nice to know if action could be taken. And to people in doubt, you would be suprised at what big companys would do to just squash small debates like this, bad publicity, hassle, I mean to them it is a small amount in comparison to the big picture. But I guess that would depend on how many of these indescretions were publicized. The company I work for has people suing constantly for the stupidest little things (it seems like thats the way the world works now, if your upset....sue) but they do just that, to big companys, to an extent, its pocket change. I think however it is a hassle on your part as well and as pissed as I would be I dont know if I would go through with it, but still GL.

It can happen to any of them but from what I've been reading the original 60gig models have been dropping like flies. Just got mine back a few weeks ago.

Yeah, it was a launch 60gig model. Got it in November of 2006 so it ended up costing me $162 (includes tax).

I guess thats not so bad, I mean almost 3 years of solid play. I am curious to hear from more people with different size systems to try and put together a theoretical ratio to systems.

Can we stop calling it "Yellow Light of Death" Sometime soon?

I mean, we didn't call the 9/11 Attacks the "Aeroplane of Death"

Its getting a bit stupid.

I hesitate to even post in this thread, but I can't help but wonder why people are attacking the OP. Sure it's not very cost effective to go through something like this, but I admire the principle. A one year warranty is not enough on a $400-600 investment. I have always been of the opinion that Sony should provide a two or three year warranty for their big electronic products. Some might argue that would cost Sony money. I argue that if they'd provided quality products, they already SHOULD last that long. Granted, it's only a small percentage of PS3's that are affected by the YLOD... but that should only serve to further the argument that Sony should extend the warranty. And if none of that is ever gonna happen, Sony should at least attach a 1 year warranty to any replacement console. I think it's ridiculous that you can pay $150 for a replacement only to see that one (potentially) fail in a few months at a cost of another $150. This isn't really so much a knock against Sony as much as it is against big electronic companies in general. $500 is a lot of money. A system like the PS3 should be protected for longer than a single year.

So you're going to do all that to save a 150 dollars?420Token420

wow....

he's saving 115 dollars AND trying to set an important precedent so lazy stoners like you and I will eventually be able to send our Ps3's back to sony should they break, because they will be sick of being sued to fix something they should be responsible for fixing.

Thats what I was saying, I praise him for refusing to take it like that, for an average person with no family law help it might be a bit more than you would bargan to take on "just to see", but since he has help, it will be nice to hear what happens. I am still curious about what systems are prone to this, because it was mentioned that a few are more susceptible than others. And I only call it "YLOD" because that was the first I had heard of it, granted I just joined this site recently in order to find people w headsets to play with on RE5. But its just like my Eclipse when i bought it and heard of people talking about "crankwalk" it made me nervous, and even though after years of owning and hard abuse on a stock motor running 19 psi of boost now with 156k on the clock it still makes me nervous, and that it is an issue, and needs attention, although both issues seem to be rather small they are still issues. That was my only concern. But I am still curious both as to which systems it has been happening to, as well as the outcome of the OP.

Because microsoft repairs RROD for free? Because systems shouldn't crap out after a year? Because sony will look very bad by comparison to microsoft getting sued all the time if this works? Why WOULD you want to pay $150 is the real question?

Its worth it because I'm sick of companies screwing with people with one year warranties that don't fully inform consumers of their rights.
