I just got the flashing red light of death and I was wondering if the best thing to do was to call sony and have them fix it for free (they do that, and they also ship it for free).

My Symptoms: after turning my PS3 on, I can do anything I want for about 3 minutes until it turns off and goes to the rlod.

I've already tried wiping it off and there is nearly no heat where I keep my PS3.

Call Sony. If it's in warranty, send it to them and get it fixed for free, if not you'll have to pay $150 for them to either fix it, or they'll send you back and refurbished one. After you get it back you will have an additional 3 month warranty.

Sounds like theres a problem withthe system starting up, then switching back to standby mode.

If its under warranty call Sony. you should have a new (reconditioned) console delivered in 2 working days!

And another thing, why must people insist on comparing these faults to that of the xbox...rrod...ylod...seriously?

I am completely sure its the red (flashing) light of death. It is a 60 gig launch system.

I play for 3 minutes, BAM! red light of death, flashing, mocking me to my face. I can even turn the system on again by switching the power off and on, but I will still get the rlod again.

I am pretty sure it's the RED lod because the light is RED and NOT YELLOW

It is definately the RED light of death.

I am not confusing it with the YELLOW light of death because the light that is flashing is RED and NOT YELLOW.

I have seen this stuff on youtube and they say to take it back to sony.

Might just be overheating if it's actually working and then just shutting off and giving you the flashing red...try giving it more room (especially the back), taking it off the carpet etc....if that doesn't do anything you will pretty much have to call sony.

Thing is the term YLoD is kinda misleading considering it usually shows 3 different colors and yellow only quickly flashes by...suprised it isn't call it the red blinking light of death or something like that.

It means your PS3 is overheating. It happened to a friend of mine a few months ago and that's what Sony told him was wrong.

You can fix it yourself, if you're good at that sort of thing.

In nearly every post theOPmade he has mentioned that it is IN FACT a RED light and not a YELLOW light that is going buck wild on his system.

But then he mentioned it flashed yellow for a second, whatever. Regardless it sounds like it has overheated and the TC didn't know that and kept trying to start it up and just made it worse.

If you've checked on youtube, and been advised to call Sony then do that. There's not much people on here will be able to do, other than speculate at what the problem is then advise you to call Sony

Stop turning it on! The flashing red light means the motherboard is melting!

1. Hard shutdown the PS3

2. Unplug the PS3

3. Set the PS3 in front of a cool fan on a cool surface (not carpet) and let it cool down for a couple hours.

Your PS3 isnt totally destroyed untill you get the yellow light of death; the red light means your ABOUT to die.

at the end of the day, its a red light, so people call it both Red light or Yellow light of death. I got the so called Red Screen of death, i looked it up online and thats what they call it, had it twice after watching 2 dvd's this week. Yet my PS3 is still working. The RSoD as its been called has a red screen with so many different languages, one in english saying a serious error has, or has been occoured, please contact your tech support etc. I thought my PS3 was dead, but all i did was turn off, on and thats it. 3-4 days have past, still used it and its purrrrrrring like a good girl =], for now that is. If it dies, it dies, im outta space and have reset the PS3 back to its origional state many times, so losing game data isnt really going to affect me. Ill just replay the game again, just with a new, bigger hard drive. Sorry to hear about the death of your PS3, i wouldnt advise you call sony, ive heard many problems with them. Send it off, get it back only for it to break down, again and again, before you know it, you be on your 6th PS3 in 4months. =[

It's probabally because they leave their console on when they are out and leave it in a compact area so that there is no breathing room for the air vents, Thus the console overheats

i bought 1 of those small fans that connect to the PS3, it has 4 fans to it to help cool the PS3 down, i only use it if im playing it for ages. I mainly watch dvd's at the moe, got no space for any new games. So i dont really need to use it that much =[

Yeah, probably. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the YLOD is a direct result of the console getting too hot because of poor ventilation. It doesn't matter how long you leave it on necessarily, though. As long as the PS3 is in a well-ventilated, open area, there should be no chance your PS3 gets the YLOD. If it can't get hot, I don't see how it can get the YLOD. I've left my PS3 on for more than 12 hours at a time on many occasions, no problems at all. Why? It's in an open area, I take care of it (keep it free of dust, etc..), and I don't leave it on when I'm not using it.

Maybe this is why my PS3 has lasted well over 2 years without a problem? :D
