Everyone does realize closing schools will place more parents out of work, right?

The pandemic has to be put under control. That is the most important issue.

The pandemic isnt going to get put under control until well after a vaccine becomes available. We cant realistically lockdown until that time. Survival does trump money yes but that is still a relative statement. At some point homelessness and starvation come into play. Does that give people a better chance of recovering when they get sick?

A lot of the world has done a pretty good job putting it under control for the time being.

Granted, we might see a second wave coming.

Population? We're not the most populated. We're 5th I think and we have 25% of the deaths. That's bad. All those other things just point to a failure of a federal administration.

The BLM protests/riots increased all of that 10 fold.

Distancing probably didnt cause cases to rise. I mean, i should contact trace, and not use common sense

Funny you should bring up contact tracing.

Did you happen to notice any of the articles pointing out Doctors were not asking about protests because you know... its racist to ask?

The racism card trumps all things in life, including logic and even survival.

Oh? And what was said about it exactly? I remember bringing it up, posting a link and everyone ignoring it, not even a response. I dont understand how anyone can bring up contact tracing about protests, or even take contact tracing seriously for that matter, if Doctors were specifically ignoring protests.

This train of thought is why USA did so poorly for both the economy and Covid. If we listened and did nationwide lock down and mask mandate at the very onset our Economy would be far better now as well as virus results.

When our cases spiked in my county they did question those who were positive. Only 4 had been at protests but of that number only 2 had been ONLY at a crowd for protests. The culprits for the increase in cases was bars and restaurants and travel to other states.

I think travel, bars and restaurants are culprits as well. But no one wants to accept that.

https://www.healthline.com/health-news/black-lives-matter-protests-didnt-contribute-to-covid19-surge

One thing they don’t appear to have caused, though, is an uptick in COVID-19 cases.

A paper looking at virus data from protests between May 26 and June 20, found “no evidence that urban protests reignited COVID-19 case growth during the more than three weeks following protest onset.”

“We conclude that predictions of broad negative public health consequences of Black Lives Matter protests were far too narrowly conceived,” the authors of the National Bureau of Economic Research paper wrote.

That lines up with what others have seen in various cities.

“I have not seen any peer-reviewed research linking outdoor protests (or really any major outdoor events) to the surge here in Texas,” said Rodney Rohde, PhD, an associate dean for research at Texas State’s College of Health Professions who focuses on public health microbiology.

In order for there to be any data to begin with, there would have to be contact tracing. That is the whole point here. You are providing evidence that there was no connection. Ok, but why exactly is that? There is no possibility of making a connection, if contact tracing wasnt even done in the first place.

@amillionhp: You wouldn't need contact tracing to see an increase in infection rates.

Yes, you should use common sense. Saturday June 6th was the single largest protest day and estimated at 500,000 people nationwide. More people went to the beach that day. Which of course is dwarfed by the number of young people that went to a bar or restaurant that night, which in turn was dwarfed by the number of people that went shopping, got a haircut, or a thousand other mundane things.

So do you really want to compare a tiny % of the population that undertook one questionable social distancing event that day vs the huge number of people who undertook one or more different but also questionable events?

Because the math isn't on your side and it isn't even close.

Closing schools has far more dangerous impact than many people realize. To many families, that provides their daily meals, child care, structure, etc. I have no problem with schools re-opening and neither does Dr. Fauci.

Fauci says safely.....and not in hotspots.

That goes without saying.

You do know this virus stays dormant with people remaining asymptomatic for considerable time, right? Given the protests were daily, nation wide and swarms of people, how exactly is it possible to pinpoint them not being responsible for spreading it but everything else is? How could anyone use some measure of timing and infection rates to say A. is responsible but B. isnt? Which of course also conveniently happens to be politically poloarizing.

I'm honestly surprised the protest didn't cause a bigger jump in infection numbers. Bars were still closed here when the protests where here, but as far as I know they did not cause a jump in numbers of infected.
