While speaking to a group of workers in Ohio, President Trump called Democrats "Un-American" and "Treasonous" for their reception of his State of the Union Speech

"You’re up there, you’ve got half the room going totally crazy wild, they loved everything, they want to do something great for our country," Trump said. "And you have the other side even on positive news, really positive news like that, they were like death and un-American. Un-American. Somebody said treasonous. I mean, yeah, I guess, why not. Can we call that treason? Why not. I mean they certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much. But you look at that and it’s really very, very sad."

Finding unity might be difficult with such comments

Why is this news? Un-American and treasonous have been bog standard attacks in our political discourse for almost two decades. It is the position of one party that the current president is an un-American puppet. It was the position of the other party that the last president was an un-American puppet. The senate is no better.

Before that it was all about who really had the moral high ground. Before that it was all about how the other guys were un-American and treasonous.

Whatever you want to call them, "disrespectful" seems appropriate enough.

Respect is a two-way street. Why should President Trump be respected when he constantly shows a lack of respect for the Democrats, the media, foreign heads of states, and American citizens?

@perfect_blue: Take the high road. If someone doesn't respect you, you can still respect them... Or in this case, the country. Not all we're disrespectful... I saw plenty stand and clap. There were parts of that speech that had nothing to do with Trump. I've always said, even if you hate your boss(or whoever is your superior), they should still get your respect. I believe Trump loves this Country and wants what's best for it in his heart, but doesn't know how to not offend people. And it's not just him, Paul Ryan and Pence also. I'm sure I'm the minority here because it's easier to hate... I just don't see what good that does.

Trump isn't "the boss", though. He is an elected representative of the people. The people in actuality are his boss since they are the ones judging his job performance.

Why don't you have the same expectation of the President to "take the high road"?

You have got to be kidding me. You are talking about a man who, for years, literally claimed the president at the time was a Kenyan interloper. Take the high road and show him respect? GTFO, LOL.

He's getting the amount of respect he deserves.

If you are bullied, are you supposed to just sit there and take it? I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here nor what Gandhi has to do with anything. How else is one supposed to react to abuse by the President? Why do you and joshrmeyer seem incapable of holding the President to higher standards?

You really seem to be getting more and more desperate as the days go on.

Your own words make it clear you don't hold President Trump to the same standards as you hold people who are victims of his bullying and abuse. The President should be above it all but you don't seem to think so. You spend all the time berating others for how they react to President Trump's transgressions but you never blame it on the source, which is President Trump. It has always been President Trump.

If that's your act then fair enough, but at least be honest about it and quit the charade.

Good for you. Meanwhile, other people are repulsed by his racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and overall incompetence at the job. It doesn't really reflect positively on you if that doesn't bother you or invoke some kind of emotional response.

The worst part of this thread is the fact that Democrats repeated the "respect the office" line Ad nauseum during the Obama years, which was a direct contrast to when the GOP was saying it during the Bush years. Dems did it during Clinton, and the GOP did it during Reagan.

I expect the switch to happen yet again after the 2020 election. Unless of course trump bows out, then it might be another four to eight years.

Have you ever seen President Obama lash out like this to his critics? Have you ever seen him verbally abuse and berate people? Dislike Obama for his policies all you like but he respected the office, unlike the current occupant of the White House.

There is nothing to respect about the man. If you are suggesting that I respect someone regardless of whatever actions they commit, then no, I won't be doing that. For Trump or anyone else.

I like and respect people by default until they prove to me that they don't deserve it. He has proven that he doesn't deserve any many times over.

WTF........why exactly should you or would respect a disrespectful individual? Respecting a position is not actually the same as respecting an individual. You can not have any respect at all for a loathsome boss but respect his position and do your job. You are equating the unequal. Trump loves Trump. Period. Not the country. Not his base. Not even his friends and colleagues.

Hate? How hyperbolic. Because people see what a disastrous president he is and disagree with it does not mean hate. He's actually not important enough to waste emotions on. But he does suck.

@perfect_blue: Cool. A lot of people repulse me. I'm not gonna stoop to the same level. Trump has his positives believe it or not. Maybe not many, but whatever, America voted him in, now they can live with it just like any other President. It's like a bad marriage but without the divorce option... Just learn to look at the positives and you'll be less miserable.

There is nothing to like about the man, but lots to respect. The man won an election with the media calling him Hitler. That is actually quite impressive. Even Hitler couldn't do that, got in as a coalition government if I recall.

Like and respect are very different things. Do not however take this as a criticism of your sentiment. There is nothing more American then calling your leaders moronic assholes as loudly and proudly as possible.

There's nothing to be respected about a man that appealed to the worst possible inclinations within people to exploit them to his own gain. Jesus Christ.

So no you are not telling what you see, you are deflecting and apparently don´t feel like people who know better should be better. And you know what. that makes you and that group worse than Trump. What better way to try and get people to forget about your treasonous activity than to project it onto the opposing group.

As they say, when the moron takes the low road you take the high road, but what is happening here is even the media, saying if he goes low, we go lower.

It's incredible how you still don't seem to get it lol.

Why do you not expect the President to know better? Why only the people reacting to his abuse like the media or citizens? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Nice, pivot.

But of course I expect the president to be better, But I expect the people on the left claiming to have the moral high ground to definitely be better. And not sit on tv and almost cry or do like is being done constantly.

When you go down the dark road, you can´t complain about the other side.

@kittennose: Definitions of respect

How long did it take you to find one so narrow. Oddly enough, there is a Link on that very page that is a lot more comprehensive.

How long did it take me to find the Merriam Webster definitions? Please tell me you're trolling.

So is Trump a fascist now?

yeah, that's pretty much what an acting fascist would say.

I wonder who is going to get beat up and/or killed now because of his words.

Last time I checked, Democrats have been holding members of their party who have been accused of sexual assault/etc accountable, while Republicans have...endorsed them (by them, people in their own party that have done the same). That seems like the high road.

I also recall that Democrats tend to be a bit more diplomatic in their politics, while Republicans literally take vows to never work with the opposing side and seek common ground.

There was a time when "compromise" was not a dirty word. In fact, it used to be a virtuous, beautiful thing.

All politicians are bastards and whores, but the right has been more whorish and...bastardly...than the left for quite some time. Yeah, listening to Democrats whine and complain is annoying, but at least they're not the ones making your life and or country worse.

I wish both parties would get their shit together, but the Republicans have just fully embraced being the dick of the system.

Well considering I linked Merriam Webster definitions back at you, and you think knowing the definition of common words is smart, it seems like it might have taken you a lot of effort to find something so narrow.

But then again, narrow minds, narrow thoughts, so who knows.

Whatever you want to call them, "disrespectful" seems appropriate enough.

Respect is a two-way street. Why should President Trump be respected when he constantly shows a lack of respect for the Democrats, the media, foreign heads of states, and American citizens?

The lack of respect started before he even became president because he was not the chosen one to be president. The Dems were calling for impeachment the day after election day. Trump is pretty much right about the Dems. They even through the DACA folks under the bus with a large section of the American citizens. The Dems complaining because he shows lack of respect for them is like the pot calling the kettle black.

Yep, in recent memory, both Anthony Wiener and Al Franken were thrown under a bus because of it.

Selling out your country and the office of the President to erase your own personal Debt is pretty treasonous.
