https://www.rawstory.com/2018/11/trump-appeals-men-suffer-fragile-masculinity-psychologists/

Two psychologists at New York University have conducted a study showing how President Donald Trump appeals directly to men who suffer from what they call “fragile masculinity.”

Writing in the Washington Post, New York University psychology professor Eric Knowles and NYU psychology doctoral student Sarah DiMuccio claim that many male Trump supporters feel far more insecure in their own masculinity than they’d have you believe — and they are drawn to Trump’s authoritarian rhetoric because it makes them feel more powerful.

“The political process provides a way that fragile men can reaffirm their masculinity,” they write. “By supporting tough politicians and policies, men can reassure others (and themselves) of their own manliness.”

In particular, the researchers found that there was a strong correlation between counties that voted overwhelmingly for Trump and internet searches for topics related to masculine insecurity, including “erectile dysfunction,” “hair loss,” “how to get girls,” “penis enlargement,” “penis size,” “steroids,” “testosterone” and “Viagra.”

Most interestingly, the researchers found there was not a strong correlation between these search items and votes for Mitt Romney in 2012 and John McCain in 2008, which seems to indicate that Trump was uniquely adept at awakening “fragile male” voters.

“Our data suggests that fragile masculinity is a critical feature of our current politics,” they conclude. “We suspect… Trump’s re-engineering of the GOP as a party inextricably tied to many Americans’ identity concerns — whether based on race, religion or gender — will ensure that fragile masculinity remains a force in politics.”

This reminds me of the professors who played pranks about dumb studies for progressive universities. One of them was dogs humping in public promoted rape culture.

On one hand, it's cool that people who didn't vote before are suddenly more engaged in the political process and they finally have someone they can look up to.

On the other hand, I wish it was with a group that was less fragile. When a powerful group considers itself fragile and in need of constant praise and reinforcement, it tends to cause a lot of harm and trouble to literally everyone else. It makes it even worse when their ideas of good policies are literally only good for them and no one else.

I'm very skeptical of this report. If these guys were really overcompensating for manliness they'd be socially liberal.

Reports like this worry me because I am very self-conscious, suffer from social anxiety, and otherwise exhibit a lot of the symptoms these assholes exhibit. But I am not an asshole like these people are.

I don't want to be lumped in with them. "Oh he is awkward around girls, must be a Trump supporter"

Yep, same as the types who are drawn to manosphere stuff like Red Pill, PUA, MRA, MGTOW, incel, etc. No coincidence that most manosphere guys are Trump supporters.

Trump supporters/manosphere guys feel like cucks and beta males themselves, and they project that insecurity onto others. The incels are interesting specimens in that they don't even try to hide that they are in fact just a bunch of pathetic creeps who can't get women.

These guys love Trump because he's a rich jerk who treats women like garbage. He's also authoritarian. Trump is everything that these losers and creeps aspire to be.

Correlation doesn’t mean causation and all that jazz, but it wouldn’t surprise me to find there’s probably a degree of truth in it. Trump is an incredibly insecure man himself, so it stands to reason he’d only draw the same type of person to him.

Trump has a tiny dick and the worst combover on the planet because he can't accept that he's bald. Calling him incredibly insecure is the understatement of the century. Trump is small penis syndrome in human form. If he was a more of a normal guy I'm absolutely certain he would be driving a lifted truck with a boat horn.

Doesn't surprise me. If you look up pro-Trump YouTube vids without loging into a profile, you will tend to get ads like that.

My fave was the "Fat-acceptance bodybuilding" where they believed the morbidly obese should be exalted as bodybuilders and we should have competitions for them to stuff their faces and see who gains the most weight. Of course it got published, because it's 2018.

Yup sounds about right. Their entire social identity relies on projecting their insecurity on others.

@bigfootpart2: “small penis syndrome in human form”

Lol.

It’s difficult for me to watch Trump. It wouldn’t be if he didn’t represent me on the world stage. He comes off as a child operating in a world of adults who has childish notions as to what it means to be an adult. He desperately tries and wants to fit in, but his infantile concept of maturity constantly precludes it. I can look at a young child and recognize precisely the same mentality that Trump holds. He’s not simply immature and insecure, he’s stunted developmentally.

I stated that they did it as a prank/joke. What you posted is what I stated in the first place, hence my confusion.

Umm... why is this being published in a newspaper editorial rather than a academic one? Very... very suspicious.

I question the methodology... although, based on the Trump supporters I have seen, I wouldnt be surprised either. Still... something smells like fish here.

It means it hasnt passed things like peer review.

Besides, as I also stated, the methodology seems extremely questionable, focusing more on finding correlation rather than causation.

so that is a 'Yes' to my question? or a No?

I take it as a Yes

and what exactly do you think the evidence of the methodology does reveal exactly?

why is it that it appears more men Trump supporters are doing such searches more so then non-Trump supporters? what is your theory on that evidence? or are you suggesting that the evidence collected is.....?....

I should point out I am not sure I agree with the CONCLUSIONS of the facts but I find it hard to dispute the facts of the information gathered as a question of 'methodology'

@warmblur: This does not surprise me in the slightest.

I suspect it’s the same with guys who have an incorrigible hatred for feminists or any sort of gender/racial inclusion (see BF5 controversy surrounding “historical accuracy” verses female and minority soldiers). That kind of stuff doesn’t even register a response from me since...you know...it’s just a game...but for some reason they blow a gasket about it.

Yes, it passing peer review would make it less questionable. Maybe it would mean my objections to the article are just me being too cynical.

But the real issue is with its methodology. It is entirely corrolational, and builds on region rather than individuals. For all we know the culture found in some of these places lead to fragile masculinity, with gender norms being pushed on people. And the people who are suffering this are not the same people who necessarily supported trump.

When you have norms pushed on you that don't mesh well with you. That isnt exactly going to do your well being any good... I know because I was poorly treated by an authoritarian who pushed her nonsensical views on me. Took me a while to recover after months of abuse from her. All this says is that regions with strong trump support also has strong issues with insecurities.

ah ok so the academic scientific process is something you hold to have more credibility then not.

good to know, just checking.

now...for my clear understanding, are you disputing the data found by the internet searchs or are you disputing the conclusions of those facts gathered?

Yes, when something passes peer review, I generally hold it in higher regard. I still remain skeptical, but usually not to the same extent.

I am disputing the conclusions of those facts gathered. The facts themselves seem accurate.

ok...so the facts are that more male Trump supporters do these searches then non-Trump supporters.

that appears to be the hard bottom line that is indisputable, now WHY they do that is a different story, but it seems that they do, unless one is willing to say the data itself is a lie.

Now regarding pier review I will just keep that your view in mind anytime a conversation about global warming comes up

What?

From what I'm reading, it's only been shown that places who voted for Trump overwhelmingly showed correlation to these searches. Correlation isn't fact, not proof, and it really means squat, although it wouldn't surprise me to discover it holds true considering the type of man Trump is and what type of personality he draws in. Hell, maybe it was liberal women who were the ones who looked up penis enlargement for their husbands after a new ad was broadcast in the region? Maybe Google servers were in these areas?

I mean Christ man, it could be ANYTHING. This really proves nothing, and should be taken with a mountain of salt, skepticism, and incredulity.
