Poll So, about tearing down and vandalizing statues and monuments. Should it continue or is there a line? (44 votes)

Nothing should be torn down. 52%
Confederate statues and statues of anyone involved with any type of bigotry need to come down, keep everything else. 27%
Anybody that had anything to do with slavery to include owning a slave should be removed, keep everything else. 0%
If someone did something that would be considered unacceptable in 2020, their statue needs to come down no matter when they did it. 5%
Other 16%

After the protests and riots in reaction to George Floyd’s murder were underway, people understandably wanted Confederate statues removed. Many protesters took things into their own hands and pulled down statues without approval from authorities. The most recent incident that comes to memory involving a Confederate statue was protesters that pulled down a statue of Confederate Army Brigadier General Albert Pike in Washington, D.C. on Juneteenth.

While it is completely understandable why people want the Confederate statues to come down, protesters have not stopped there. Other targets in the past week for destruction included Presidents George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant as well as Christopher Columbus. An Armenian genocide memorial was vandalized with anti-cop graffiti. The Soldiers and Sailors monument in Cleveland and the World War 1 memorial in Birmingham, Alabama were vandalized. A few other incidents happened around the country.

Shortly before posting this, near the White House, there was a group of protesters that tried to pull down a statue of President Andrew Jackson but failed.

Last night, Chairman of the American Conservative Union Matt Schlapp tweeted that he believes that statues of Jesus would be targeted next.

Throughout most of the day, he was mocked for his tweet. But the mockery has turned into some serious consideration – activist Shaun King is now calling for statues that depict Jesus Christ as a white man to be removed because he sees them as a form of White Supremacy.

Do you think there is an end game to all of the vandalism and tearing down statues? Or will everything be destroyed or defaced until nothing that may potentially offend someone remains standing?

No you sound white cause you are only vocally upset when white people face consequences for their racism, and somehow eerily silent when non-whites are oppressed daily.

"Please won't someone think about the statues!"

@Nude_Dude: Am I? Guess I learned something new about myself from a random basement dweller on the interwebs.

Also, it's not actually about the statues. It's about law and order versus anarchy (you know, what you want).

And please don't be racist towards us people of color. We want law and order too.

I don't mind the confederate statues being taken down, but not like this. What the hell is going on? Why is there no law punishing these crimes? How is this not sickening to people? This is ridiculous. And they will not and have not stopped at confederate statues. Punish these assholes already.

I thought you were "non white" yet every post of yours sounds like the whitest post possible.

Anyway, tear them down. To the snowflakes, it's not erasure of history, it's coming to terms with your actual history.

Bad policy. Communities can decide if they want to remove statues. Not mobs.

It is really odd that there are statues in the US celebrating people that waged war with the US and killed American soldiers. You'd think the President would send the army to tear them down. If he liked America, at least.

Well the Confederate statues I can see coming down. But it's spread beyond that now.

It's not just the US. It's all over the west.

You'd think a statue commemorating troops who invaded, occupied, pillaged, and raped the people of Berlin wouldn't exist there, and yet it does.

@LJS9502_basic: Communities actually do remove the statues in many cases, spearheaded by activists. Latest and most importantly, the roosevelt statue in NY's museum of national history. It's up to you if you want to frame this as a mob justice thing.

Law and order isn't something that is exclusive to white people. If we find the statues offensive, then the right thing to do is to go through the legal system to get it taken down. Rioters tearing down statues is not the right way to do it, and now we have people that could be looking at up to ten years in prison for trying to tear down an Andrew Jackson statue, someone that was never a part of the Confederacy.

Also, all of this "defund the police" crap is outrageous. It's more likely to hurt black people in poor neighborhoods than rich white people that live in safe neighborhoods and can pay for their own private security while they continue to virtue signal on Twitter.

Statues that are around today in the west were erected long after the people they celebrate have been dead. All in a furor of nationalism.

I don't see the point of taking down statues, use them as a learning tool. Did good, did bad. Does it matter just say what happened. Can't erase the past and forgetting about it will only cause the same mistakes again.

I don't think we should have confederate statues. They were traitors. They lost. They need consigned to history books and Civil War movies.

I could care less unless they're privately owned and maintained then the public can rightly bugger off. But I live in a county where they paid 800K on a rabbit sculpture or a whopping 8 million on a statue of piglet so the fascination of these constructs is quite boring.

@LJS9502_basic: During the the time when nationalism was the rage these statues were erected to celebrate the so called Americaness, Canadianess, French, whatever country in the west it happened to occur in. Handwaving away my argument by declaring swing and a miss isn't a valid argument.

Confederate statues belong in museums, but nothing should be “torn down” if for no other reason than the video of the protestor whose head was split open and flatlined 3 times on the way to the hospital. That idiots wife is suing the city...

As I previously stated before, individuals have NO right to destroy property. If a community wants the removal of some statues that is different.

You mean contemporary art, Modern art goes from 1860 to 1970s. And that is a pretty ignorant statement but expected from someone who doesn't have an idea on how to approach art or think about it. You should strive to become more educated. Look at more art and analyze it (thinking) and think about the context it was done in (more thinking!).

It did happen someone put White Lives Matter on the statue:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8434977/Statue-Arthur-Ashe-vandalized-words-White-Lives-Matter-Virginia.html

No idea if this was a ploy because then they came right back to spray paint BLMs on the statue. So again BLMs people defaced the same statue. Can't make this up folks.
