If we shared all food equally all over the globe we might have a chance to survive, 7 billion of us, that's the next goal.

Solar tech, wind tech, ocean tech and reusable energy through friction are still in their cradles but the research is at a point to distribute power more efficiently, especially solar power and reusable energy will have possible breakthroughs until 2025.

Nuclear power has its vulnerabilities and the disposed used nuclear rods takes too much time to defuse, that's why it's hard to make it feasible.

yep, everyone except you and your family am i right?

as for the topic, theres not much we can do. My suggestion is this: Get rid of all patents, IP, infinite trademarks, anti free market regulations. But at the same time start enforcing tragedy of the commons regulations...you know the one subset of law the government SHOULD enforce but fails to do time and again because of "politics". Things like charging people for pollution they create, waste they create. These are also commie subsidies that need to be eliminated but no one in government can seem to get their act straight.

My first point on getting rid of patents, IP, infinite trademarks would shift the economy away from the commie capitalism system we have going on. People would work less, and create less waste. I have no idea where this goal of enriching a few people while screwing over everyone else came from, but it needs to stop immediately.

You know that hasn't anything to do with this topic. Seriously dude it's becoming an issue.

"skeptics can reasonably ask why society should destroy the energy underpinnings of the industrial age that have so advanced the human condition."

it isn't about "destroying" what we have, it's about progress, even if people don't believe in mankind's impact on climate change. For people who are so fond of the advancements brought to us by our gains in the understanding and use of new technologies of the past, it's strange they would suddenly no longer support future development in technologies which will help move us another step forward in energy efficiency.

What Gains?

Sorry, I was wrong, it's just the BitCoin network using that much power, in 2017 it used the power equal to Denmark and a year from here, who knows, some have said that crypto-currency might replace gold as a steady currency.

In Norway I think the popularity is on its way down because of the falling prices.

Sounds terrible, but we need to regulate developing nations. Or whatever you call "up and comer" nations.

Is it fair? No, it's not fair that countries like India, China, and the US were able to expand so quickly and so dirtily; but the fact is we can't let anyone else do the same thing because the planet can't handle it. Any new developments need to be "green" or occur slowly.

Fossil fuels are here to stay, I think we all need to accept that; but they won't last forever. I don't believe it is too soon to begin a slow-but-sure migration away from fossil fuel dependence for a lot of things, specifically consumer goods (plastics and other petroleum products).

We also need to get rid of a lot of our outdated traditions: religion needs to go, that is just holding humanity back. I mean if you want to believe in God, fine, but the fact it is so prevalent in politics and life in general is ridiculous. It's preventing reason, modern thought, and flexibility.

There are going to be two ways forward when it comes to developing nations. One is that they go the China route and rely heavily on fossil fuels to get them to an advanced stage of development. Needless to say, this is going to be very bad for the environment. Still, from their perspective, if they're dealing with disease, food shortages, environmental disasters, and everything else that goes with being a developing nation, and the nations that wasted literal metric tons of fossil fuels are telling you that you can't do the same, their reply is going to be a big ole **** you. They're going to use fossil fuels whether we like it or not.

The second way is that we share technology and probably even invest in their infrastructure. This is going to be hard considering we can't even get our government to invest in our own infrastructure. Still, if we want to avert catastrophic warming we'll help these nations invest in technologies like nuclear power, electric cars, public transportation, and other technologies that will curb emissions while still bringing them into a later stage of technological development. It'll be a hard pill to swallow, but if we're really serious about limiting emissions we'll do it anyway.

Fossil fuel consumption has been falling steadily, world wide, for at least the last 4 or 5 years.

not sure that is true, it depends on what you mean

The 'demand peak' which is the peak of oil demand expected is still rising but its expected to peak.

but if you mean per person you might be right I am not sure, but I do know that the demand peak has not hit yet.

I have a lot invested in oil so its good for me to know some of this stuff

Anything which has been developed as a result of our understanding of the use of fossil fuels for energy. There's an awful lot, but there's an awful lot of more efficient energy options which can replace that old tech and push us further.

Well one could put more focus into alternative means of energy, such as Wave & Current turbines, Synthetic fuel, geothermal harnessing etc.

One could also be looking into ways to reduce damage on infrastructure due to a natural disaster, improving the general climate within cities regarding smog and heat by using more flora and less darker surfaces.

The planet has been fine, but that doesn't stop liberals from fear mongering when it comes to climate change yet where our their solutions? Its just like gun violence in America, instead of talking about regulating handguns more, which are responsible for a vast majority of gun deaths in America, they are doing a false crusade against AR-15s, because the 90 people per year are more important than the thousands that have lost their lives. I just wish that the left was philosophically consistent, but it will never be.

I reiterate, Al Gore has been bitching about climate change over 30 years and because America hasn't done anything its now the fault of conservatives and the Republicans? Sorry, but I don't follow that bullshit logic. Obama was in office for 8 years and what did he do about climate change? Not a damn thing, but remember according to liberals Obama was the greatest president ever... hahaha stupid people and millennials need to stop getting into politics because the left is a joke at this point.

Climate change and gun violence.........two things conservatives REFUSE to do anything about and you're blaming liberals? Either you don't pay attention to facts or you're trolling.

They did, but of course its the fault of the Republicans right? Democrats and liberals alike have nothing but excuses, how about taking some form of individual responsibility? I mean Hillary is still touring around the world continuing to play the blame game on why she lost the election. She has literally blamed everyone, but herself. When the Democrats lose the next election, maybe they will start to become more sensible.

Frankly, this is a terrible idea. Blaming and punishing developing nations for what is clearly the fault of already industrialized nations is harsh and most of all, will never work. The most GHG emissions still come from the industrialized places, not the developing world. Unless there are massive, massive incentives for the developing world to go green there is 0 chance of "regulating" them.

You're implying that something the Republicans did is somehow the fault of Democrats and lecturing me about personal responsibility at the same time? Are you seriously a plant meant to make conservatives look bad or do you really have that little self-awareness?

Sounds terrible, but we need to regulate developing nations. Or whatever you call "up and comer" nations.

Is it fair? No, it's not fair that countries like India, China, and the US were able to expand so quickly and so dirtily; but the fact is we can't let anyone else do the same thing because the planet can't handle it. Any new developments need to be "green" or occur slowly.

It's not blaming or punishing them, it's preventing them from making the same mistakes we already did/do. Preventing a handful of industrialized polluters from turning into a whole bunch of industrialized polluters.

This is not an issue of morality or subjectivity, it's necessity. It is no time to "take it personally", you might say.

I am also not saying that it is unfairly up to developing nations to share the burden; industrialized nations need to contribute as well and do their part (and, for the most part, already are).

Granted, it'd be a lot easier to swallow if you did not have the US/China/etc hypocritically saying "no, no, you can't do that. No coal!" :P

These nations also needs to understand the importance of a well working waste disposal system / recycle system.

No need to cull the population. If you look at highly developed countries like Japan and those in Western Europe, people are increasingly not getting married and having children. The problem may sort itself out in a generation or two. Things may flip completely in Japan. They have an aging/dying population with no one to replace them since the young people would rather jerk off to catgirl anime than have sex with real people and reproduce. European countries are like this too. Hardly anyone marries or has kids. The US is actually a weird exception in the developed world where people are still having families. But it's becoming a thing here too with millennials increasingly opting out of marriage and kids.

Republicans filibuster every piece of legislation President Obama tried to pass, Republicans blame President Obama for not passing legislation. Conservative logic.

all i know is when the ozone layer was in crisis, leadership got that shit taken care of.

@mighty-lu-bu: you are another conservative commie. Happy to suck off the government tits when it comes to socialist commie policies like patents, IP, infinite trademarks, antifree market regulations, then go about harping on the liberals for asking for their piece of the pie. Listen buddy, I'm a liberal and damn proud of it. As long as you commie snake conservatives keep living the socialist commie lifestyle courtesy of the government, I and all the rest of the liberals will be asking for our handouts. I'm just asking for my piece of the pie, that's all. Every single government socialist program I've been eligible for, I lined up. I even try lining up for things I'm not eligible for like food stamps and welfare. I see it as my right, my stolen wealth that I'm recuperating. The commie government and it's socialist commie benefits towards corporations, on top of the tax cuts?? Yeah, a big FU to the government, they haven't done anything for nobody. The snake conservatives are in on the scam.

Anyone with half a brain can tell you the solution to the problem. End socialist commie benefits once and for all. I'm not just talking about corporations here who get to suck on the government tits with their hands out asking for tax cuts on top of their commie benefits, patents, IP, infinite trademarks, anti free market regulations, etc.

But put that aside for a minute. If the government ended all the commie subsidies that are given to regular people, there would be huge drastic changes. For example, there is a cost for pollution, for emitting CO2. But the government has absolutely failed the market and it's people by not factoring it in. If they started charging a pollution charge, it would have eliminated the commie subsidies that people are getting. Sure gasoline and natural gas gets more expensive, but that is the real freaking cost that you pay. If people started paying the real cost of gas, there would be a huge shift to electric cars. Natural gas would kill off coal, even nuclear would become competitive. When you don't pay the real cost of something, then it's a welfare subsidy. This has all sorts of consequences. Such as climate change.

Another commie subsidy is all the plastic junk people use. It's causing millions of tons of plastic to enter the ocean and directly harming our marine environment. The fish are even eating this junk. It's hurting our fisherman's livelihoods. Where is the plastic charge? Put a price on the plastic equivalent to the cost of cleaning up the ocean. That would make people pay the true cost of plastic instead of the commie subsidies the government is giving. People need to wake the eff up. The government is buying your votes with commie subsidies that is directly hurting your own future and children's future.

Nuclear is, and will always be better than wind or solar. I can see over 50 windmills from my back deck, they've ruined the environment around me. Inflated hydro rates at no environmental benefit, which is proven by the report that show the air quality has not change since this province stopped burning cheap coal.

On a nice summer evening when the wind is just right, I hear "Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh" all night long as the blades pass the support structure.

If you are concered about the 7 billion people on earth, then you should worry about the day our sun will turn into a red giant and end all life on earth. It's inevitable, this world, and human race will die, Mars is no escape.

I'm also convinced someone paid Steven Hawkins to say we only had 100 years to get off the planet before he died, just to keep this hysteria going. I mean, who wouldn't believe him, even though he originally said 1000 years.

100 years, 1000 years, 100,000 years...whatever. The fact is that the whole "Earth is going to end anyway, why bother saving it?" attitude is completely defeatist and screwed up. First off, that's a pretty long time to clean up our act; second, what about quality of life? Sure, we can find a way to keep burning coal and stuff, but it won't be a world worth living in when the sky is nothing but smog.

Some lovely pictures of an unregulated North America, before we cared a little bit about the environment:

I'd rather not go back to that. And what a difference we have made in 40 years just buy limiting the crap we put in the environment. Imagine what we could do if we actually made a serious effort?

And how close are you to that damn turbine? Those things don't make that much noise, you must live in a camper parked next to one.

@bigfootpart2: When I was 18, 1998. I decided I was not getting married, or having kids. Both had reasons. Getting married had a high chance of landing me in divorce court and losing years off my life.

And I saw this high tax progressive regressive BS on the horizon. So I wouldn't have kids to become tax paying slaves whom I'd have to pay for private schooling so they wouldn't be indoctrinated by the progressive swine that graces my public school system.... while paying taxes for it.

All this was foreseen. It appears I'm not the only one. Do I really care if North America stays as what it is...ask me when I'm dead. I'd rather live this life in peace. Joining the human race and society beyond having a few beers with my buddies is akin to suicide.

Well, it was actually a UN treaty that enforced CFC regulations, one negotiated by Reagan and his administration. Congress had little input in the matter. The equivalent for climate change would be the Obama administration negotiating an international treaty that addressed the issue, otherwise known as the Paris accords. So President Obama did, in fact, take the same action to address global warming that Reagan did to address ozone depletion, and now Trump is reversing his actions.

@mrbojangles25: "100 years, 1000 years, 100,000 years...whatever."- So, no argument there? Spoken like a true progressive.

"First off, that's a pretty long time to clean up our act;" - So we die clean? Cool...I guess.

"second, what about quality of life?"- My rectum don't spit out tax dollars. And if you kill every job, who would have a good quality life?

"Sure, we can find a way to keep burning coal and stuff"- never should have stopped. Also, nice picture from the 80's, Oh no... a Smoke Stack...

"but it won't be a world worth living in when the sky is nothing but smog." Won't be much of a planet when the sun is touching the surface of the earth either. But you and I won't be here to see either, so what are you worried about? Your family seed that will get killed off anyway?

"I'd rather not go back to that. And what a difference we have made in 40 years just buy limiting the crap we put in the environment. Imagine what we could do if we actually made a serious effort?" - none of that means we should stop burning coal, considering CO2 is not a pollutant, but a building block.

Also don't worry, you won't have to go back to that. Life is fleeting and you'll be dead before you know it... Enjoy your time here, it's your only time here. The future will fend for itself, for humans are not the driving force of the universe, just a small part of it. And we do not control this planet, and never will. Your end game, is death. There is no play, not even trying to diminish my post, this world is still on a death course no matter how you try to spin it. What can not be saved, can not be saved. Deal with it.

@bigfootpart2: Funny you say that. In Canada the Liberals are red, and conservatives, blue.

I agree, in my country at least. the reds are a huge drain.

My red premier just forced a minimum wage hike from $11.75/h to $14/h. Slated to go to $15/h next Jan, 1st. Mainly because she is a tax-and-spend-thrift-know-nothing-fool who only jacked the wage to put more tax dollars in their coffers.

A rational person would have lowered the amount of income tax a minimum wage worker pays to put more money in their wallet. (which is what the opposition candidate has proposed, no taxes for minimum wage workers). When you jack the minimum wage for some, you raise the cost of everything else for everyone else. Progressives and economics do not mix, like oil and water, western civilization and Islam.

But up here the red is a drain to, are your republicans really progressives, or are you just lying through your teeth?

The commie government and it's socialist commie benefits towards corporations, on top of the tax cuts?? Yeah, a big FU to the government, they haven't done anything for nobody. The snake conservatives are in on the scam.

A conservative commie huh? You do realize that is an oxymoron right? You sound pretty smart, I'd better watch myself hahaha

It's 420. Do not expect Blazn to make any sense.

Basically all the steps they are taking now, half heartedly, should have been done a long time ago. It's probably too late at this point, the damage has already been done, and we're just going to have to try and live with the consequences for as long as we can.

That doesn't mean that measures shouldn't continue to be taken now to attempt to migitage some of the effects of global warming though. Better late than never.
