@LJS9502_basic: The reasons why Donald Trump is president and not Hillary Clinton fall on both sides. We can talk all day long about how bad Trump's first 100 days were and assume that he will not be reelected in 2020.
However, all of that means little if people continue to use the same smug attitude when referring to people that voted for Trump and dismissing their concerns. You are not going to insult a Trump supporter into voting against him in 2020, you are going to have to offer him a reason to vote for the other guy.
Some of them are really dumb, but the vote of a 37-year old high school dropout holds just as much weight as the vote of a 29-year old Harvard graduate that votes in the same state.
If the Democrats want to win in 2020, they can't concentrate exclusively on the coasts and ignore and/or mock the flyover states again.
They have to appeal to all of the states, because the popular vote means nothing when we still have an electoral college that gives each state a voice.
That's just ridiculous. People are allowed to have opinions. My opinion does NOT affect who gets voted in. Nor does yours. Nor anyone else. What a completely stupid thing to imply.
Concerns? Trump himself has alienated many that voted for him. Sure there is a conservative base that will vote R no matter who it is. But they aren't big enough alone to sway an election. Independents and unhappy Democrats are NOT happy with Trump. To win an election you need both the independent voter and some of the other party. He stands or falls on what he does. NOT someone's attitude/opinion.
Likewise Trump can't screw those people over....which he is doing....and win again.
I didn't say a thing about not being able to have an opinion. The problem is when people let their opinions make them smug and elevate to mocking Trump supporters or even resorting to threats of violence (Ann Coulter) or actual violence (Milo Yiannopoulos) in order to silence them or get revenge for putting President Trump in the White House.
Even Hollywood has joined in, with several TV shows getting political. Supergirl on CW had at least one anti-Trump snub in almost every episode that has aired this year, to include a comment from Supergirl's newspaper editor telling her about how unverified stories could put a fascist in the White House. Then, there were stars that outright insulted Trump’s wife and children after criticizing people from the right for doing the same thing with President Obama’s family during his term.
If anything, their mocking and the violence has empowered Trump supporters to stick to their choice, with a recent poll stating that 98 percent of the people that voted for him last year would do it again. The loudest critics of the president already hated him and were voting against him, so they are going to protest while his supporters quietly head to the polls like last year.
When it comes to his promises, Trump has the advantage of claiming that some of his promises were blocked by federal judges and holdouts in Congress blocking his proposed bills. Trump will make it no secret that outside sources hindered him from some of his promises, and his supporters will eat it up.
If Democrats want to retake the White House, then they need to show those people in those red states that voted for Trump why voting D in 2020 would be in their best interests, instead of snubbing the flyover states in favor of catering to the big urban cities.
They only need to convince one person over the 50% mark in each state, the fact that 90% of voters in Washington, DC voted for Hillary Clinton didn't make any difference, since she got the same three electoral votes that Trump got in Montana with 56% of the MT vote.
