I found this pretty sweet deal. Much better than spending a fortune for one on Craigslist.

And the China knockoff's begin. I'd rather just emulate the library on my handheld.

Never realized there were 8 contra games released for the nes. That 500 games is probably more like 100 tops just repeated.

Just get an Analogue NT mini and leave all this software clone BS behind.

For less than the price of the Analogue NT mini, you can buy an authentic real NES in good condition and mod it with the Hi-Def NES mod. That's the better option in my opinion.

@storm_of_swords: The Analogue NT Mini is actually a better value when you consider that it can play pretty much any 8-bit system (Atari, collecovision, intellisvision, game gear, game boy). It also comes with a Bluetooth NES controller plus receiver, and has the highest compatibility NES flash cart built in. It also has dual RGB/HDMI output.

A good condition NES, new 72-pin connector (blinking light win mod), and hi def NES kit isn't exactly cheap. To have a comparable setup to an NT mini, it's barely cheaper.

The hi def NES is also limited to 4x scale, whereas the NT mini can do 5x with some overscan which is awesome.

I have both, my NES toaster and top loader sit in a box in the closet now. Authenticity argument loses some meaning when you have something as accurate as the NT Mini, it's in a way different ballpark than a retron or android app.

@achilles614:

Valid points, but most of those things aren't important to me. The idea of playing Sega Master System and Atari 2600 games on the same system as my NES games seems a little bit blasphemous to me; plus I wouldn't be able to use the authentic controllers for those systems; I'd rather play them on authentic Sega and Atari made hardware. I tried those 8bitdo bluetooth controllers and I'm not a fan; the d-pad doesn't feel the same as the authentic NES d-pad and the button layout is different than a normal NES controller. I'm not a big fan of playing games from a SD card either; I prefer to use the original cartridges.

And I dislike that the NT Mini doesn't look like a NES. The front loader NES is one of the coolest looking console designs and I love how it looks on my shelf; and opening the door, pushing in the cartridge, pushing down, and then pushing the power button in the front of the console is part of the NES experience and all of that is missing with the NT Mini. I also heard that the sound is a little bit off from an authentic NES.

While the NT Mini is obviously far superior to crap like a Retron or an Android emulator; it's still just not authentic enough for me. I'm not satisfied with anything less than the authentic NES hardware made by Nintendo. So a Hi-Def NES modded NES is better to me and is also a cheaper purchase since I don't want things like the 8bitdo controller or flash carts.

@storm_of_swords: you can use original controllers and cartridges via adapters.

Hate to break it to you, but the hi def NES emulates the NES sound processing logic using an FPGA chip the same as the NT mini does. So neither is truly authentic, but they are absolutely accurate.

The whole authentic hardware thing is BS, it was a valid argument brought around because software emulators sucked for a long time. Now that we have fully accurate hardware simulations, it's just an argument based around aesthetics of the plastic box under a TV. The "feel" of the games on the NT mini is identical to the original hardware, in a blind test you wouldn't be able to pick them apart on a CRT monitor running composite.

Once people start to realize and accept how good accurate hardware simulations are, these retro consoles can go where they belong, in a museum or on a shelf being properly preserved. I think software emulators have just left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I'll admit I'm probably slightly biased as I study electronics and they're one of my biggest passions. So console hardware and projects like the HDN/NT mini fascinate me. But I really do think authentic hardware is silly, especially since people seem A-ok playing on console hardware revisions which technically aren't always accurate (SNES mini, Genesis 3).
