Nintendo and Sony worked on making a CD based add-on for the SNES in the early 90s but ended up not happening. Its basically how Sony started making consoles. I didn't know about this.

Nintendo worked in the early 90s on a CD based add-on for the Super Nintendo, together with Sony. This device never came to be as the company decided to work with Phillips instead. This move ended with Sony pushing forward and making their own console, known now as the PlayStation.
200 of these SNES CD prototype units were ever made and barely anyone has seen one in the flesh, but that changed today.
