I personally don't think Super Metroid is much to talk about, it's good, and has a great boss lineup, but can get stale.

Super Metroid is an adventure game that has shooting in it. If we're just judging its shooting, the game is okay. If we're judging it's level design, platforming, atmosphere, weapons, ability upgrades, hidden secrets, and shooting, then it is one of my all-time favorite games. What makes Metroid great is finding a new upgrade and thinking to yourself, "hey, I bet I can climb to/blow up/jump over that thing in the other area now that I couldn't before".
I don't look at Super Metroid as a shooter, but rather as an action/adventurer and platformer. In that regard, it's one of the best games ever made.

Super Metroid is definitely not a shooter. Action/adventure? Yup.
I'm currently playing it for the upteenth time on the Wii U partially because releases are stagnant but mainly because it is a high caliber game. With that said though, I'm not surprised if people today don't get it. You are thrown into an alien environment without any direction or hand holding and it just worked!

This exactly
Well Super Metroid is not a shooter, it's an action/adventure game.
I really enjoyed Super Metroid, it's not the holy grail of gaming to me. I personally preferred the Prime series.
I've never played it but I love the newer castlevania games that borrow metroids gameplay concepts (hence the term metroidvania) so I'm sure I'll like it.
Wouldn't call it a shooter. There's a lot of exploration and the actual shooting is fairly basic (not in a bad way though since the game is genuinely challenging). And I wouldn't call it overrated. I played the game for the first time in 2012 and I was blown away by how much I loved it. Its design is simply top notch in every respect.
Super Metorid for its time was the greatest game to hit the market. Gaming has evolved over time to what it is today. Super Metroid still stands as one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in a video game. I would rather go back and replay super metoid over 99% of the games made today. Super Metroid and it's style of gameplay were groundbreaking for it's time.
