In some NES or maybe SNES games back in the day (maybe even in games for other gaming consoles) there was a type of map that only displayed the area f the map that your character had explored. Until you explored it, that part of the map would be black or in some way un-viewable. Then as you discovered different areas of the map, they would show up in your map for good. I'm thinking mostly about those types of games where the map was displayed in the upper left or right of the screen.
What is that kind of map called? Is there a name for it?
Also, what are some games that have used that kind of map? What was the first game to use that kind of map?
