Nostalgia plays a big part for me when I turn on sonic 2 or streets of rage 2 I still get that feeling.
Because alot of retro games are better then modern ones also the gaming industry back in the day was less exposed it seemed more pure.
I think Retro games are still popular for a variety or reasons. Nostalgia, originality, quality, and the simple fact that those retro games where played new by a generation of gamers that are now working and will pay to play it again.
In a market that's flooded with copy and paste gameplay loops, play it safe franchises, and max profit DLC schemes, retro games have an appeal that can't be matched by today's business focused industry. Graphics are cool and all but being able to pop in a game and not have any bug fixing updates, thrown in elements to stretch the game longer, and knowing that game is the complete package from beginning to end isn't a thing anymore, and alot of people who played these games when they where new like remembering that and reliving those days when games took risks and the market was more about pushing creativity over profit margins.

Good books, good movies, good music & good games never die. They just get passed down, recommended & remade to keep the next generation in the fold. Mark Twain and Charles Dickens stories are still retold all the time, people do covers and redos of popular songs often, movies get remade with new actors\directors. The same will happen for games. We have the online stores that sell digital versions of old games, retro game collections in various formats and remakes are happening a lot now.
I think it's because it's really different to the game mechanics we are used to today.
A lot of developers back then had a wide range of mechanics, both bad and good due to the hardware limitations. To me they offer a unique experience because of that.
TC is a spambot but mods seem to be ok with it so I'll contribute.
I think it's nostalgia mostly, but I also think that there's a growing trend of younger people trying out old systems and games because it's hip and shit. I think it's better for the gaming community as a whole. For an older game to be popular back in the day, it had to be good. There was no day-1 patches or DLC. Those retro games that were the shit back then, still hold up today. Graphics can be dated sure, but fun is still fun.
Retro games being popular is a good sign for the culture. There are plenty of indie developers on all 3 consoles that are creating games that give of that retro vibe, I see that as a great thing. Retro gaming in particular supports some of the best games that have come out in the past.
For the same reason Nintendo is popular.
Retro games are easy to pick up and play and focus on gameplay rather than story or graphics.
I prefer mortal kombat 1 to mortal kombat 11 as it has basic controls with a few buttons compared to the complexity of 11 combo system.
Some times less is more
Some games are timeless, some gameplay mechanics never go out of style.
Besides, while modern gaming has definitely evolved, the core elements of gaming has not changed all that much I don't think.
Also some people like the art direction of retro-styled games (or classic games).

I'm 4 months late here and as you can see, mods don't even come to this place anymore but I still come from time to time, and to be frank, I'm slowly not trying to come back in Retro Gaming myself as this is a dying place. Anyway, I took care of the bot but leaving this thread open because reasons.
I own both Last of Us and Horizon Dawn. And they are just so hard to get into. I was dissapointed with the hype surrounding HzD and Last of Us is just Uncharted with "clickers" that arent even scary
Retro games are often times better, and sometimes it is a play entirely on nostalgia. Playing through Diablo II again, I have almost completely moved on from the modern games I was playing. Games were just made different 'back then.'
Some more youthful people may just say that makes me old. That's fine too
I think it takes us back to simpler times. Not having to worry about adult problems. Most of my friends that would couch game with me are always working or live far away. I'm in my 30s and back in my childhood years internet was just barely getting big. Gone are the days of grinding ultimate mortal kombat 3 with friends to see who can pull off the fatalities in the guide book.
