Brand new trailer!

"METAL SONIC! AMY-ROSE! ROBOTS! IT CAN ONLY BE SONIC CD

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO — 25th August, 2011 —SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that Sonic CD™ will debut on mobile phones and consoles everywhere. Originally released for the MEGA CD™ system in 1993 and with Metal Sonic and Amy Rose making their introduction, Sonic CD is coming to digital platforms with music from the original Japanese soundtrack. The beloved prequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 ™ Episode I is coming to iPhone® and iPod® touch, iPad®, Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation® Network, PC Digital Download, Android and Windows Phone 7 and will be available for download this winter.

"Ask any Sonic fan to name their favourite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists," said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA. "Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic's history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We've made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colourful ****c zones."

Following the ****c story of the original, Sonic CD sees Dr Eggman plan to cause chaos and take control of the future by stealing Times Stones from the Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time whilst fending off Eggman's robots to recover the Time Stones, and save Amy Rose from his mechanical twin, Metal Sonic! This fast-paced game will return with brand new features including enhanced widescreen graphics, iOS features, Xbox LIVE Achievements, PSN Trophies, PC Achievements and more."

New art, remastered, Japanese soundtrack...this is great.

It's been comfirmed that Taxman is re-mastering the game using the Retro Engine!

The question is, will this be regarded as "oh yeah!", "about time!", or "why didn't ________ happen instead/as well" for the general fan base? :P

I hope they don't make it a Sega vintage version, sure it was nice to save and load at any point, but you can't do anything at the title screen, which means no cheats, and I won't be able to see the beginning"Sonic Boom" video at full screen,At least give me some freedom >_>

Rumors are going around that Taxman, the man who created a program that could replicate classic Sonic gameplay (proving it by replicating Sonic CD on the iPhone), is doing the XBLA recreation of Sonic CD; giving Sega the 'Retro Engine' for commercial use.

It would be nice to see it on PSN and Wiiware too, Sega all the other Sonic games are on those services you know.

And where the hell is Knuckles Chaotix already?

I'd prefer Knuckles' Chaotix. I don't care for this game.

Then again, I don't have an Xbox. So it doesn't affect me.

I have it on Sonic Gems, but I would prefer a xbox or psn version since its saved on the hard drive, hopefully cheap, and all my online Friends obviously care what game I'm playing.

Also, don't the XBL and PSN versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 have widescreen?

You should note that it's a full HD remaster made by Sega and Taxman. It'll be using his amazing Retro Engine. Eveything is going to be remastered. Hopefully Episode 2 will be using the Retro Engine.

I liked the US one, the bad future last zone (forget the name) PAL version has pretty creepy speech (including "Sonic dead or alive, is mine")

Still not interested really. Namely because I don't have the console for it, and would likely go for the Gems Collection version anyway (a few extra bucks for a couple other good games and several I'd at least like to try).

Can they fix the bosses to not be such pushovers? The final boss is almost embarrassingly easy... Might pick this up, though. I have the windows 95 version of Sonic CD, which worked fine (with some patching) on XP, but in Vista and 7 it doesn't stand a chance. It uses some "dino" graphics library that was on windows prior to the advent of DirectX, which has since been pulled (due to general suckage, I bet). It's be nice to have a working PC copy, and remastered to boot.

And once again Sega acts like the Wii doesn't exist anymore. Oh well at least Wii owners can play Sonic Gems Collection. And don't say the game wouldn't fit on the Wii's download memory. You can get SD cards and if the system can upload N64 games, it can handle a Sega CD game.

They don't even have to remaster it for the VC. The VC audience would like to play it in it's original form.

Serioulsy f%$# you Sega.

Though hopefully this is a sign we might see Knuckles Chaotix show up eventually. Though Sonic CD really seems to be one of those "love it or hate it" Sonic games. For many it's either the best Sonic game ever made or the worst piece of crap outside of modern games. I may download it for the PSN but right now money is tight not to mention several other games on my "must download" list I haven't gotten to.

  • Deathspank
  • Castle Crashers
  • Bonk's Adventure
  • Maybe download the original Crash and Spyro from the PS1 library

I always preferred having Self vs. Self by Pendulum/In Flames as the boss music. But that might be me. Anyway, what's the graphical detail going to be like on this engine? Like textures, and which Sonic sprite.

Fun fact: on the windows 95 version they didn't bother doing any sort of protection on the data. With a little computer magic, you could insert any music in anywhere you liked.

Sega Staffer Speaks Sonic CD Details; Revised as Sonic 4 'Prequel' Patrick Riley confirmed that Sega has retrofitted Sonic CD's place in the timeline as after Sonic 3 and Knuckles but before Sonic 4: Episode 1. The rationale behind this was that Sonic CD's developers never put any direct mention of Sonic CD's place in the timeline.

...I was pretty sure Sonic CD was supposed to come before Sonic 2. I mean, really, it could go anywhere, as Sonic and Eggman are the only recurring characters, but the fact that there's no Tails and no airplane seals the deal for me. EDIT: Missed a post where you explained that Sega has officially make it that one. Still, I don't see how they came to the conclusion that Sonic CD goes there. Perhaps they're going with the versions of Metal Sonic to track the timeline? Doesn't explain why he gets less powerful from S3 to SCD, then.

The game doesn't fit on the VC's download memory. =P Nintendo's Strict File Size Limit to Blame For Sonic CD's WiiWare Absence It's not their fault that the Nintendo put a patheticly low file size on the VC. The original Sonic CD doesn't fit the 40 mb memory. There's no way the remastered version is going to. It's not a matter of "We don't care" it's a matter of "It can't be done". Cursing at Sega is a bit silly.

Come on, they can't just change it like that. Sonic CD's been accepted as before Sonic 2 by most people since about the time it came out, and now they're changing it for some port of the game? Wonderful, if they plan on being able to tell all the fans that.

Actually, it wasn't. It was theoried to be before Sonic 2. Heck, even I thought it was. Although there's NEVER been an official solid place in the timeline where Sonic CD was set. Now we're finally sorting it out. It doesn't even matter, anyway. If anything, it actually makes more sense that CD takes place after 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles.

I blame Nintendo and there strict File Size limit, its possible they can have a 3DS download, since they most likely have no file limits there, but I doubt that would happen.

..and my bad, that Sonic Retro Article confused me.

Out of curiosity, how do you come to that one? As I mentioned before, Metal Sonic's progression is the only indicator you really have to go off of at all. I mean, Tails follows Sonic around everywhere, right? And he has a plane. I would think the absence of plane to take Sonic to planet and Tails to fly it would hurt the argument pretty badly. ...Also, I just realized something. What the hell is Amy doing on that planet? Is she secretly a Time Lord? Maybe her hammer is her version of the Sonic Screwdriver. (Though I think she'd rather have Sonic Sc-
