Why doesn't the NFL give out Thanksgiving Day games to better teams? The Lions are bad every single year and have been for decades yet we have to watch them play every time. Wouldn't we all rather see an important game this late in the season every year?

Detroit's on the upswing. They've got a lot of young talent they need to develop, and between the draft, trades, and free agency they should be better within a few seasons. Remember Miami was, what, like 2-14 before they put together a good season. Anyways, yes I think Detroit should keep the game, it's tradition.

I would like to see them mix up the teams. I don't so much care about if they've been good or bad, just some different teams would be nice. An AFC and an NFC matchup.

I agree. I know the current system is great for Lions and Cowboy fans but I wonder if it's the games or the over-eating that makes everybody sleep on Thanksgiving?

Not really since they usually get the early afternoon game.

Plus there is an important game tonight between the Giants and Broncos.

I don't want to see them or the cowboys. Tradition, my ass. I want good football. Why not put a matchup people want to see like colts vs. patriots and so on?

I agree. Too many traditions are always lost, but you can't predict how good a team will or won't be at the beginning of the year so you don't know if the matchup you make will be a big game or not....Therefore, keep the traditions.

Besides Cowboys and Lions fans who is it suppose to be a tradition for? I know I sure as hell don't care about sports traditions unless it involves my favorite teams.

those games should be flex games, and have some good teams play on thuresday. the bad side of that is the teams that would play have less time to prepare. but they get paid enough so htey should suck it up.

Tradition FTW they can't stink forever. Plus it guarantees ratings for bad teams.

The Lions flat out suck and have always been a terrible team. Yet they're rewarded year after year with the honor of playing on Thanksgiving. I'm sick of accepting a crappy tradition. Let's give a real team a chance to play every Thanksgiving.

If they wanted to I'm sure they could choose not to play the Thanksgiving day game, let someone else do it, and play the regular schedule.

For all you haters you do see different teams every year at 8 PM. If you want to petition the NFL to make that game Colts vs. Pats, we'll then go right ahead. The Cowboys are staying put on Thanksgiving and there's nothing you can do about it.

Yeah, we know because the NFL is just fine appeasing its bandwaggon fanbase.

Let's look at this year's matchups and consider these were scheduled before the season even started.

GB vs. Detroit
Oakland vs. Girls
NYG vs. Den

I think PTI got it right when they said these horrendous games are supposed to make us pay attention to our families. I know it did in my case.

Do you realize how well this would go over in the NFL? It's not just "they get paid so they need to go play..." Teams plan for a week for a sixty-minute game. You can't just spring it upon an organization that they are playing in three days. When would the match-ups be announced? Enough time for fans, tickets, et cetera to be in order for the Thursday game or long enough away for that to be settled and for hot teams to cool off? Giants/Broncos would have been a likely scenario early in the year as the Giants started 5-0 and the Broncos started 6-0 but both teams tailed off a bit already and that game sucked. It's the Lions and Cowboys and that's how it should be. It's fine that they added a late-night game, but they can't take away the tradition. If you want good football, watch those match-ups on Sunday. Would people rather see Saints/Patriots on Thanksgiving or on Monday night? Monday night...

Thanksgiving. I don't get home until around 8:00pm on weekdays. :P

Keeping tradition for the sake of it is just stupid IMO. This isn't a religion, it's a freaking sports game. Why not show some good games instead of lopsided ones on a day that everyone can watch?

So if it's football it's ok for it to suck? That makes no sense, especially when it's 3 bad games in a row.

If the Cowboys weren't paired up with the Raiders this year the games this year would have been good but GB vs DET and DAL vs OAK were rather one sided, even NYG vs DEN was one sided.

Traditions that suck aren't worth keeping...

at one point those teams WERE good you know...

obviously good enough for them to get a tradition

teams are gonna suck...it's common knowledge...just because they suck doesn't mean take away their tradition

i say let's just put the cowboys and lions against each other every thanksgiving...so that way they still both play AND we have room for 2 other games like colts vs. pats seeing as how that's becoming a november tradition these past couple of seasons

I know it's tradition... but it's to the point you wish they'd replace the Lions with another game until they are competitive again. On the bright side.... you know it's safe to eat around 2 pm because you know you're not missing anything in the Lions game. It's usually out of hand once the 4th Qt starts.

They should just make the match up equal. Packers vs Lions? Raiders vs Cowboys? Even Broncos vs Giants is crazy (if you consider where people thought Denver would be when they made the schedule). But like I said, make the games equal. Lions vs Browns a couple weeks ago was epic. Have the bad teams play bad teams and vice versa.

Its obvious that the NFL wanted the Packers, Cowboys, and Giants to win when they made the schedules. They probably wanted to pass it off as important to the playoff standings or the division leads. They knew the Lions and Raiders were guaranteed to suck, and the Broncos were supposed to be horrible at the beginning of the year.

I guess. I was talking more about the Cowboys and Giants playing on the same day. Possibly, playing for the division lead.

I think a lot of you people don't realiz that the schedules in the NFL are always known well in advance before the season starts. So there is a good opportunity that a matchup that was once considered a good one, 6 weeks later look pathetic because thats how the NFL goes. Thats why they have flex games. You can't please everyone and not every matchup no matter primetime or not will be a good one.

Detroit has always had the Thanksgiving game so thats a given. I don't think everyone thought that Denver was going to be bad this year, I mean at the time they made the schedule Cutler was still on the team. Secondly you don't know how any team is going to be. I mean I understand the Raiders are the laughing stock, but you still don't know. Any given Sunday.

Dude, those games were designed to make Dallas, NY, and GB look good. Don't pretend that wasn't the intention when it's so blatantly obvious. Denver had been falling apart since midseason last year, and NY once again was supposed to be a SB contender.

What do you mean it was meant for them to look good? Are you serious? Here come the conspiracies. So they have been trying to make Dallas look good for 30 years? The Denver and Giants match up ended up being a decent one considering what was a stake for both teams even though it ended up one sided. Greenbay was terrible last year and so wasn't Detroit. So I have no idea where you are getting this looking good idea from. All the teams that played in Thanksgiving this year were pretty bad teams last year and even though the Giants ended up 12-4 they were falling apart ever since Buress left, so I think your argument is moot.

Are you joking? GB was one of the most hyped up teams going into this year. Everyone had Rogers leading them to the playoffs. Detroit on the other hand was coming off a 0-16 season; there was no way in hell they were going to get better. Then there's setting up Dallas against Oakland of all teams. Tell me who is going to win that one? Yeah, I thought so. The Giants have been a SB contender for the last 3 years now. You even said they went 12-4 last year. So what if they lost Buress, they were still viewed as a premier team, and were very much favored to go far in the playoffs once again. Denver on the other hand was going on a downward spiral and it was assumed Shanahan was going to get fired by the end of last year. You can throw the conspiracy card as much as you want in my face, but all of these looked like one sided matchups no matter how you slice it.
