i totally agree with the comissioner. there needs to be a salary cap imposed for rookies comming into the league. with not as much guaranteed money but with more incentives for better play. 10 million a year for some kid outta college that has never played a down in the NFL ? and vetrans playing for years for a fraction of that ? thats is insane. do you guys think ? is a cap comming ? and also i LOVE what goodell is doing to the league !

I completely agree with him on this one. They need a rookie pay scale similar to the NBA model. NFL teams end up paying a lot of money for busts while hard working veterans get shafted.

This is a dangerous proposition

If this goes through the way the whiners want it to it would go through the entire draft. So while it would make the first round of players have "acceptable" salaries it would hurt everyone else 2nd round down.

Especially second day picks, those guys get nothing now and this would further drive down their pay.

There has to be HUGE changes made with this.

I completely agree with this, I thought it was kind of ridiculous that Matt Ryan gets a 72 million dollar contract and is a rookie (making more than a lot of vets). But they should have a minimum for all the players drafted after the second round (so their salaries dont get dramatically reduced from what it already is). But I do agree with Roger Goodell (for once).

Yeah, this fix is long overdue. A totally unproven rookie QB making Tom Brady level money day one of his career is impossible to justify.

The league minimum salary for rookies is $285,000. Yea the 2nd day picks get "nothing" now.

This isn't a thread about jealousy

If you can't discuss this in real terms (where 285,000 is nothing) then we're not going to eye to eye.

Maybe increase the minimum and put a reasonable salary cap.

$285,000 is a lot of money, yes in real terms. I don't understand your point. How exactly some decrease in the 2nd day picks' pay hurt them so much that it's worrisome? They can live on 200k a year. You make it seem like if they did this, the 2nd day picks wouldn't have enough money to feed themselves. Please tell me how this would hurt 2nd day picks to the extreme?

Boy some people really don't know about money.

This is a great idea, I'm sure that a guy like Goodell can get it all squared away and put an end to bloated salaries for busts and rookie hold outs.

If you can't discuss this in real terms (where 285,000 is nothing) then we're not going to eye to eye.

Jaysonguy

If you think that $285,000 is nothing then you aren't going to see eye to eye with the majority of the world. People in my community own nice homes and drive new vehicles making thirty to forty thousand a year.

Football players live, breathe, eat, sleep in the real world. My point is if their salary goes from 300k to 200k, they shouldn't have any trouble living comfortably in the real world. So to worry about their well being when making this decision is stupid.

I like what Goodel is trying to do. It makes no sense to pay some one that hasn't even stepped on the field yet.

Nobody's forcing the owners to give rookies such generous contracts. If an owner is too spineless to put his foot down and say "no more huge rookie contracts", that's his problem. He doesn't need to complain to the league and beg the commissioner to come rescue him from his own financial incompetence.
