You have to understand Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to find the ground game exciting. I thought it was lame until I started to know more about bjj. Then when you understand how badly you can hurt someone with an armbar or triangle choke you'll knowthat mma fighters are the most badass athletes on the planet, and it gets much more exciting.
I love watching old boxing matches, but I can't really watch boxing anymore cause its just way too corrupt. Besides, boxing is ONE aspect of fighting. Mixed Martial Arts includes boxing, kick boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo, etc - all aspects of fighting. As Pat Miletich said, They used to say a boxer was the best pound for pound fighter, now they're just the best pound for pound boxer. MMA fighter are the best pound for pound fighters. Not to mention, MMA is ARGUABLY one of the oldest sports in the world (its a lot like the Greek Pancration).
I recommend everyone try and see if they can find the interview 60 Minutes did with Pat Miletich and Renzo Gracie.
It looks like chaos but what you have going on is a chess match mixed with a war of attrition.
Fighting hurts, yeah, it hurts for a second or two each hit unless something gets broken and whatnot...but have you ever played American football on a truly competitive level? I'm not talking High School football mind you, that's nothing...
I play division 1 football in college, I've witnessed alot of things. 1 game in particular saw a young man fall and have the femur break outside of his skin, become infected through contact with the air, and almost lose the leg. I've seen guys paralyzed neck down being carted off the field. Do you know what a concussion feels like? I do. A worse night you cannot imagine.
MMA might be fun and exciting to watch, but I wouldn't say its a tougher sport than American football or rugby, no way in hell.
No one is questioning the toughness of the sports. It's different types of toughs, but to be honest, I played football and I feel safer in the octagon that running full speed head to head with another guy.
It will never replace football(soccer) and rugby as my favourite sports but it is my favourite combat sport i find boxing very slow and boring now also boxing is lacking stars where are all the great boxers now seriously i can only name a few champions and even then i dont know what weight or belt they have.

Football being more dangerous doesnt make it tougher, it just makes it more dangerous. And nobody trains harder than mixed martial artists, and you cant dispute it. The real tough fighters train like hell every single day, most eat completely clean as well. See what guys from Team Quest and the Miletich camp do for training, and tell me anything you've ever done in football was as hard as that. And not to mention that mma fighters are the most badass athletes on the planet hands down.
UFC and Pride are actually really boring to me. They are too one-dimensional to interest me for any extended period of time.swamprat_basic
Watch a Wanderlei Silva fight............
Till you wrote about it, I had not thought about martial arts other than when done in movies. Nothing will never replace NFL/college football.mrgab
I'm sure you realize this, but I just feel the need to point out that there is no "rule of thumb" that dictates that the nfl should always be on top... back in the 80's in the heyday of early Jordan and especially Bird and the Showtime Lakers, the NBA dominated most peoples attention... again, the NFL could easily topple itself if it gets too overconfident... since Jordan has been gone, the NBA has not been the same... it can be as little as one player making the difference for some...
