I was wondering if anyone has the same feeling as I do. Im a huge fan of mixed martial arts. Boxing too, but not nearly as much. I used to watch a lot of football (American Football), but ever since Ive become a fan of mixed martial arts (mostly UFC and Pride FC for about 4 years), football just doesnt seem all that exciting to me. I never liked baseball or basketball, they were just to boring to me. Mixed martial Arts is so exciting, from the submissions, to the knockouts, to the incredible athleticism, its great. The action of the NFL, like the hard hits, just doesnt seem like much compared to mma anymore, and its kinda made all other sports obsolete to me. Does anyone else feel the same.

Till you wrote about it, I had not thought about martial arts other than when done in movies. Nothing will never replace NFL/college football.

For me, boxing is more exciting to watch than MMA. The ground game in MMA is weird and abstract to me. I feel like I need to take a shower after watching an MMA match because it just looks wrong.

You have to understand Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to find the ground game exciting. I thought it was lame until I started to know more about bjj. Then when you understand how badly you can hurt someone with an armbar or triangle choke you'll knowthat mma fighters are the most badass athletes on the planet, and it gets much more exciting.

I do not understand, appreciate, or like any of these fighting sports. Except for hockey.

I LOVE MMA.  I love it so much that I got involved in it.  I've never had more fun participating in a sport.  The amount of dedication it takes to be a great MMA fighter is incredible, and theres a real passion and spirit in the sport.  I still love watching Football, Baseball and Hockey though (not so much basketball).

I love watching old boxing matches, but I can't really watch boxing anymore cause its just way too corrupt.  Besides, boxing is ONE aspect of fighting.  Mixed Martial Arts includes boxing, kick boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo, etc - all aspects of fighting.  As Pat Miletich said, They used to say a boxer was the best pound for pound fighter, now they're just the best pound for pound boxer.  MMA fighter are the best pound for pound fighters.  Not to mention, MMA is ARGUABLY one of the oldest sports in the world (its a lot like the Greek Pancration).

I recommend everyone try and see if they can find the interview 60 Minutes did with Pat Miletich and Renzo Gracie.

It looks like chaos but what you have going on is a chess match mixed with a war of attrition.

Fighting hurts, yeah, it hurts for a second or two each hit unless something gets broken and whatnot...but have you ever played American football on a truly competitive level? I'm not talking High School football mind you, that's nothing...

I play division 1 football in college, I've witnessed alot of things. 1 game in particular saw a young man fall and have the femur break outside of his skin, become infected through contact with the air, and almost lose the leg. I've seen guys paralyzed neck down being carted off the field. Do you know what a concussion feels like? I do. A worse night you cannot imagine.

MMA might be fun and exciting to watch, but I wouldn't say its a tougher sport than American football or rugby, no way in hell.

Thats not true about fighting man.  Ever get multiple leg kicks?  Ever been put in a submission (don't have to break something for it to hurt and hurt for a long time).  Or what about getting knocked out?  Sure that doesn't hurt at first, but then theres a HUGE rush of pain that follows afterwards.  And I got a concussion from fighting, and yeah, it is torture.

No one is questioning the toughness of the sports.  It's different types of toughs, but to be honest, I played football and I feel safer in the octagon that running full speed head to head with another guy.

so basically you can't watch a competitive sport unless there's a lot of physical contact in it...?

I flip past it sometimes while I'm watching TV, butit justdoesn't hold any appeal for me. Watching two guys beat each other up,kicking and punching at each other, and wrestling on the groundhalf naked isn't my idea of entertainment.

I like it, but I don't see how it replaces any other sport. If you're a fan of the athletics, you can still have the respect of other forms for the skill, for the mastery, and for the 'dance' that goes on the field/court/course/ice even if they don't have the same kind of contact and 'ferocity' that you say you see in MMA.

I watch some MMA from time to time and it's interesting, but I wouldn't call myself a big fan. I love physicality, so it's way better than baseball and basketball, but NOTHING will ever top ice hockey in my book.

UFC and Pride are actually really boring to me. They are too one-dimensional to interest me for any extended period of time.

Football being more dangerous doesnt make it tougher, it just makes it more dangerous. And nobody trains harder than mixed martial artists, and you cant dispute it. The real tough fighters train like hell every single day, most eat completely clean as well. See what guys from Team Quest and the Miletich camp do for training, and tell me anything you've ever done in football was as hard as that. And not to mention that mma fighters are the most badass athletes on the planet hands down.

Pretty much sums it up for me. MMA is a fad and will be off the scene in 10 years.

I'm sure you realize this, but I just feel the need to point out that there is no "rule of thumb" that dictates that the nfl should always be on top... back in the 80's in the heyday of early Jordan and especially Bird and the Showtime Lakers, the NBA dominated most peoples attention... again, the NFL could easily topple itself if it gets too overconfident... since Jordan has been gone, the NBA has not been the same... it can be as little as one player making the difference for some...
