NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Damn. RIP. The cops right now are suspecting suicide.

That is very unfortunate for his family. I don't really remember hearing that he had issues, but he was one hell of a football player.

Awful :(. I wanted to see him get a ring so badly late in his career too, especially when wa was with the Patriots. Apparently he shot himself in the chest; like Dave Duerson last year. Makes me wonder if like him, he was trying to save his brain for research.

I just hate how other deaths related to head injuries by NFL players are glanced over yet this one is gaining so much attention because he was a 12 time pro-bowler. Still RIP.

Aren't you the one saying that the NFL has the "girliest rules" ? when they are trying to protect the players?

I understand the NFL has become a pass happy league because of the rules but I think they are trying to prevent long term effects like this from happening, if it is caused from brain impacts.

Football is going downhill, this is a inherently violent sports and if you take that out it stops being football(if you can clamp down the violence at all). Hockey too. Looking forward to baseball and basketball at the top.

It's a sad day for football. RIP.

-

All these suicides in sports lately makes me wonder if the leagues aren't doing enough for their players, past and present. Most people, let alone athletes, wont ask for help, maybe because they don't want to be thought of as weak, or that they wont be 'real' men admitting they need help. But there needs to be some way to get these disturbed people help.

-

I sure hope he donated his brain to science. It will go a long way for the future of sport. I just hope it doesn't become an epidemic for former or current athletes. It is not the answer, nor will it ever be.

FACT! NFL has turned into a massive wimpy joke. Sad, because I love the sport more than any other. Junior Seau was apart of a breed that is fading away, hard hitting linebackers. He always came across as a great man and player, HOF without a doubt.

I agree with protecting the players, but these guys know what they are getting themselves into. They know this is a violent, dangerous game with a lot of risk attached with playing it. I don't want to see these things happen obviously, but I also don't want the league to ruin the game. A tricky balance to say the least.

I agree with protecting the players as well, I just think some of the rules changes have hurt the sport. You can't get rid of the violence out right and the players know the risks involved with what they do. There needs to be a balance, but to make it so defense can't play the sport anymore is going to far. It is a sensitive balance, but a real discussion amongst owners and players needs to happen further.

Simply shocking. He's one of the NFL's great class acts and greatest LB's. I'll always remember him holding it down with the 2007 Pats defense even at like 40 years old. It's unfortunate that he didn't get a ring. RIP :(

Always repected his game. RIP Seau!

Can you believe he is the 8th player from the Super Bowl XXIX Chargers team to die? That's unheard of.

Running back Rodney Culver died in a plane crash on May 11, 1996. The crash of ValuJet Flight 592 killed all 110 people aboard, including Culver's wife.

Linebacker Doug Miller died in 1998 as the result of a lightning strike at the age of 28.

Center Curtis Whitley died on May 11, 2008 as the result of an overdose and was found in his trailer home in West Texas.

Defensive end Chris Mims died of an enlarged heart on Oct. 15, 2008.

Defensive tackle Shawn Lee died from cardiac arrest on Feb. 26, 2011.

Former Chargers linebacker Lew Bush died of a heart attack on Dec. 8, 2011.

I'm not really sure how it's possible to do that.

You can create a helmet that keeps the head relatively stable upon impact, but I don't know how you can create a helmet that can keep the brain from shaking inside the skull.

Same could be said for baseball and basketball too. Look at what happened to Justin Morneau, was concussed sliding into 2nd. Or Harden getting MWP's elbow to the side of the head. Every sport has some form of contact, it's finding the least risky sport that's the key. If your kid has the passion for any sport, they will get into many situations that have the potential for injury.

-

I would say no to the football and hockey also. Football for obvious reasons. Hockey because it's ridiculously expensive. Baseball is the way to go. They'll get a ball and get to learn how to throw left handed if not their natural hand. Too much potential cash.

What do you mean You people? jks.

There will always be improvements, but none that will effectively stop the brain from rattling around in your skull when struck. Think about it, any blow to the head causes your brain to move just a little. The cerebrospinal fluid 'cushons' your brain to a point, but it wasn't meant to absorb excessive abuse.

If you want your kid to play a non contact sport. Tennis and Volleyball is your alley. Baseball code is throwing wild pitches at batters.

Those are two unique examples. Meta WP just should be out of the league and the Morneau case is a rare example. But yeah, there is always risk when playing contact sports.

RIP Seau

As for the side topic about the rules. The only rule I honestly want gone is the "can't hit defenseless receivers" because it's given receivers no reason to be scared of the middle of the field. You've essentially neutered future safeties who play like Ronnie Lott, John Lynch, Brian Dawkins, etc. Not to say those guys couldn't cover(no they were fantastic at it in their own right). Their game was laying people out and being enforcers in that secondary.

Helmet to helmet rule? Agreed. Why are you leading with your helmet?

Protecting a QB below his knees? Agreed. We saw it with Carson Palmer. We saw it with Brady. I think it's a very good rule. I don't think refs should be throwing flags for slight brushes near the legs(that's ...come on), but it's certainly an area that I'm not against the league protecting.

No bump rule? Eh I guess I can dig it? Because sometimes borderline pass interference got overlooked as "nah brah, that was a legal bump"

But that defenseless receiver rule? I forgot what game but some receiver got hung up on a pass, jumped for it, and got rightfully clocked for it, and the safety got the flag. WTF? QB shouldn't have led him like that, and welcome to the NFL. The middle of the field is suppose to be a get clocked zone. I don't like college football, because college defenses mess up fundamental basics. And now the NFL has butchered defenses and now the NFL just looks like nerf football. I've seen more physical play on Friday Night Lights. That needs some adjusting.

I saw that Outside the Lines i think it was, with Jim McMahon or whatever the Bears QB was back in the day. They showed just jacked up he was already and he was going in on a lawsuit against the NFL. They would suffer a concussion, sit a play out, then go back into a game. I wonder if Jr. started to deteriorate and just said "screw it, i'm taking it into my own hands" R.I.P.

I'm surprised no one is thinking steroids had a play in this. For everyone calling it a wimpy sport, the sport does not need big hits to make it great sport. Its a fun sport to watch just with regular tackling. Yes some of he rule changes make a difference in the game as a lot of clean hits can be seen as a penalty, but at the end of the day this is what will save people down at the end of the road. I be streroids had more a play in this then him taking hits, because the man did it for 20 years, now all of a sudden when he retires he is suicidal? Sounds to me he stop taking roids and see ya later.

I know lots of guys try to hang on to their sports careers for as long as possible because they just don't know what to do with themselves after retirement. I think that could have something to do with it for Seau - if you add that to the brain damage that he almost certainly suffered from running full speed into guys for 20 years it could be a bad combination.

Of course it's possible that he took steroids and they were a factor but I don't think my theory is far off...especially when you consider that Seau "retired" once and then came back to the NFL just a few days after retiring. The NFL was his life.

Sad for his family and friends. Suicide is one of the most selfish things you can do, and any respect he earned in his life just went down the drain.

R.I.P. So it looks like that driving accident may have been a suicide attempt after all. SAD truly SAD.

Sad for his family and friends. Suicide is one of the most selfish things you can do, and any respect he earned in his life just went down the drain.

Wow, I can't believe you would say that. Obviously you never expirenced that kind of pain.

Outside of the "his respect went down the drain", he's kinda right.

you're supposed to mourn your mother. not the other way around. you cause her extreme pain. i have ZERO respect for anyone that does that. its a horrible, horrible thing to do. if something happens and you die on accident, thats one thing. but to cause them this amount of pain on purpose? that's one of the most selfish things. and i am glad the world will not have to put up with someone like that any longer.

I don't even know what to say. Just that if you had to go through what he did you would not be saying that. Depression affects everything about you including his decision making and thinking. All you know is pain. You will do anything to rid yourself of it, because it drives you insane. In his eyes he wasn't doing a selfish thing. If he was such a selfish person he wouldn't of left his brain intact presumably so reserach can be done. Here is a good post from ESPN.

If you want your kid to play a non contact sport. Tennis and Volleyball is your alley. Baseball code is throwing wild pitches at batters.PSP107

I don't want them playing high contact sports. Football and Hockey are violent games. Baseball has very little to no physical contact between players and rarely batted/pitched balls to the head. I would rather they try sports that don't have high chance of severe brain and neck injuries. There is a vastly high instances of concussions and other debilitating injuries.

Those are two unique examples. Meta WP just should be out of the league and the Morneau case is a rare example. But yeah, there is always risk when playing contact sports. Master_Live

While they are two unique examples, they were at the top of my mind when I though of brain injuries. There are other 'natural' examples as well, collisions in the outfield/collisions diving for loose balls. Head struck by pitch/head striking floor. I was just saying that these types of injuries are in virtually an sport.

So if your kid is entering High School at 6'6 225 and a high school coach is telling to try out for football, why deny him? Also, for those who don't won't there kids to play football, then you shouldn't allow them to watch it.
