[QUOTE="monkeytoes61"]I agree with protecting the players, but these guys know what they are getting themselves into. They know this is a violent, dangerous game with a lot of risk attached with playing it. I don't want to see these things happen obviously, but I also don't want the league to ruin the game. A tricky balance to say the least.-Halftime-
I agree with this as well. I used to be 10X the football fan that I am nowadays. Losing interest every year.

Me as well. I just ran into a moron who claimed there was nothing different about the game from 5 years ago. I didn't have the energy to explain to him how stupid that was.

Those are two unique examples. Meta WP just should be out of the league and the Morneau case is a rare example. But yeah, there is always risk when playing contact sports. Master_Live
Kicking him out over an accident is a little extreme. It's not like he meant to do it.

Outside of the "his respect went down the drain", he's kinda right.

sherman-tank1

you're supposed to mourn your mother. not the other way around. you cause her extreme pain. i have ZERO respect for anyone that does that. its a horrible, horrible thing to do. if something happens and you die on accident, thats one thing. but to cause them this amount of pain on purpose? that's one of the most selfish things. and i am glad the world will not have to put up with someone like that any longer.

I don't even know what to say. Just that if you had to go through what he did you would not be saying that. Depression affects everything about you including his decision making and thinking. All you know is pain. You will do anything to rid yourself of it, because it drives you insane. In his eyes he wasn't doing a selfish thing. If he was such a selfish person he wouldn't of left his brain intact presumably so reserach can be done. Here is a good post from ESPN.

nope. he was just looking for an easy way out at the expense of others. ZERO sympathy.

This isn't a huge shock. I never believed that he fell asleep at the wheel a couple of years back. As for the discussion of suicide in general I agree with ChikaraShref. It is more self-centered than anything a person can do in life. If he had presence of mind enough to text his ex-wife and kids, he wasn't completely powerless in regards his decision.

Linebacker Doug Miller was fatally struck by two bolts of lightning in July 1998 in Colorado. Struck by lightning twice? Holy mother of god this curse could be more then just a freak coincidence!

Goodell is forced to drop the hammer on players and increase rules protecting players to prevent one thing. Lawsuits. Lawsuits are the only thing that can take down a corporation the size of the NFL and when those former players charge that the NFL is doing nothing to protect players in court, Goodell can point out his zero tolerance discipline policy and new rules.

Lawsuits or a decreasing amount of fan interest. Look at the game in 5 years, see where it is.

At the moment, decreasing fan interest ins't a problem. Lawsuits are and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.. People don't watch the NFL for hard hitting defenses. People watch the NFL for high powered offenses. People complain about the NFL and how we might as well put skirts on QBs. Well how good is the NFL when stars like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers get hit hard and are out with injuries? Fan interest is much easier to handle than class action lawsuits.

Speak for yourself. You only know why YOU watch, not everybody else. Stop acting like a universal spokesman for all fans, I like defense and hard hitters as do many others. The NFL is turning into a girly league and if you don't think lots of people take issue with it....Look at the reaction Goodell got at the draft and the hate he gets every where else. You might like a watered down wussy league, but not all of us do.

I never said that I wanted a wussy league, you're just magically getting that out of thin air and nor did I act like the universal spokesman for all fans. The fact remains that the NFL is facing huge litigation from former players that will be suing for billions because the NFL didn't do enough to protect them. If Goodell bows to the people unhappy about the new rules, it paves way for a crippling lawsuit.

Rofl, fans. Fans are possibly the worst example you can bring up as a defense. Fans are trapped in the moment most of the time that they don't see the grand scheme of things.

So if your kid is entering High School at 6'6 225 and a high school coach is telling to try out for football, why deny him? Also, for those who don't won't there kids to play football, then you shouldn't allow them to watch it.PSP107

Why would I deny them? There are thousands of reasons, I have named several in this thread. Why risk it? What possible reward could come from your child playing football, going pro or to college, suffering a debilitating brain injury that could drive them to suicide at a very early age? Just for some cash and a brief stint as a star are not worth the very real possibilities that come from football.

-

If they're that size, why not baseball?

Doc Halladay is that size. Link.

Plus he makes more than the vast majority of NFL players.

-

So we shouldn't let them watch anything we don't want them to do?

If I don't want them to speed then I should say to them, "you're not allowed to watch any film or tv show that has a vehicle that exceeds the speed limit" ?

I see. Would love to see that game then but the more I think about it the more you seem to be right that the majority of football spectators (which are casual) find high scoring games more exciting.

Once again, you aren't a mental health specialist. I'm sorry that I take people with college degrees on the subject more seriously than some moron on an internet forum. You probably also think bipolar disorder and anxiety are people just "faking it".

Stop acting like you can read the fans minds, get off your high horse. You can only speak for yourself, not me or anybody else in the world. People watch the NFL for different reasons, and to make such generalizations is beyond silly. You can't even know why the rating was low, you just assumed. You have zero idea of what is going on here, Goodell has to avoid lawsuits and please the fans, your claiming that he should ignore the fans shows no business sense. There has to be a balance, and right now...He hasn't found it. Remember the reaction he got at the draft? Also fan support is almost impossible to get back once you lose it, just ask the NBA. Once it's gone, it tends to stay gone and is slow to return IF it ever does.

Not my fault the Bama-LSU game was the third lowest rated BCS game, which somehow featured two defensive powerhouses with zero offense. People hated a 9-6 game that had two of the best defenses and field goals (goes for the BCS game too). Also, 3/4 cherry picked quotes (another fallacy) has no relevance. And you're still engaging in straw man. Show me where i claimed he should ignore the fans. I'll be waiting right here.

Didn't watch the BCS title game, but I know exactly why the Bama-LSU game was boring. It wasn't so much the defenses put on a good show, as much as it looked like each team kept trying to f*ck itself over. It looked like a very clumsy football game. On the flip side(I know unfair to compare it to the pros) you have Ravens vs Steelers. These aren't out right 6-3 games or something, but they have great defensive play. Hard noses teams, physical game, and a lot of good hits on each other. It's the typical NFL chess match if you will.

Shoot outs are most definitely fun(The Packers vs Saints opener was a lot of fun, I don't think anyone would argue that). But I think plenty of football fans find it absurd that the middle of the field is wide open because the NFL neutered defenses on that part of the field.

I'm not of the mindset the NFL is all awful, and not great. It has great paridy, the superbowls have been close almost every year, or at the least have come down to the 4th quarter, and we've had a host of great playoff games over the past decade. Hell we had a lot of fun games to watch last year.

[QUOTE="Travis_Odell"]Linebacker Doug Miller was fatally struck by two bolts of lightning in July 1998 in Colorado. Struck by lightning twice? Holy mother of god this curse could be more then just a freak coincidence!sherman-tank1

He was a true Bolt.

[QUOTE="DarkOfKnight"][QUOTE="Amazon-Blight"] At the moment, decreasing fan interest ins't a problem. Fan interest is much easier to handle than class action lawsuits.Amazon-Blight

Straw man?

I never said that I wanted a wussy league, you're just magically getting that out of thin air and nor did I act like the universal spokesman for all fans. The fact remains that the NFL is facing huge litigation from former players that will be suing for billions because the NFL didn't do enough to protect them. If Goodell bows to the people unhappy about the new rules, it paves way for a crippling lawsuit.

Rofl, fans. Fans are possibly the worst example you can bring up as a defense. Fans are trapped in the moment most of the time that they don't see the grand scheme of things.

In my opinion they have no right to sue. Anyone with an ounce of common sense should know hitting someone while running at full speed is not good for your body. I mean hell, when I was younger which is about 15-20 years ago even then knew that if I played football there was a chance I could get hurt, and I was afraid to play at a young age because of it, so for professional athletes to sit there and say we should now be able to sue because people have long term affects is a joke. I mean I retire my company is not going to give me health insurance.

They have every right to sue. That's the beauty of the judicial system in the US. If they believe they have any chance in hell with their lawsuit, then they're sadly mistaken. As you have said, everyone should know the risks of a violent sport prior to participating in it. I think their suit is about the fact that the NFL had knowledge of the damage that was occurring to it's workforce, and did very little to nothing to decrease the impact of the damage. If they can prove that the NFL knew about all these injuries decades ago and did nothing to curb them, they may just see some positive results. I think they just want an admittance of fault on the NFLs part.

Sure, and some millions.
