Way to snub Brian Shaw.

What a horrible hire. Sure, he can coach defense. So what. He is a horrible decision maker and I don't think he has thick enough skin to coach in LA. I honestly don't know what they saw in him. Shaw should have got the job, and if not him then Adelman. Horrible.

Also, why would you want to implement an entirely new offense when the Triangle has been so good to this franchise the last 11 years and on top of that if we have a lockout there's gonna be less time to implement it and get the team to gel if there isn't a training camp. This makes me mad.

well, what killed the LAKERS was their terrible D against the MAVS. He will shape them up on D but the offence I dont know. Maybe the O will remain the same. This is all I have to say until I see the new LAKERS play.

I tend to agree. The first thing I said when I heard it was Mike Brown was...Noooooooooo! I think Shaw would have been a better, more natural fit. He's been with the organization a long time, knows the players and probably already has their respect and confidence, has the inside track on what went wrong, what needs to change, what can stay the same ...etc. Just would have been good to see Shaw get a chance after being a Laker assistant for 6-7 yrs, but he's still very young....

Yes, Brown's added focus on defense can help the Lakers but I wasn't overly impressed with his over-all strategy at times in the post season, but maye that's unfair because the Cav's were just over matched as they got deeper into the playoffs. Brown may turn out to be ok in L.A. but I never thought of him as being in the running or as a good choice for the job, kinda surprised by this decision.

Wha?

Chutebox

This is my reaction as well

The coach who rode on LeBron's back and was played like a fiddle by every competent coach in the league is their new hire?

Should have went Shaw

you know why they got him right?

so that when the lakers see miami in the finals lebron has to ponder the possibility of getting owned by his old coach.

they got him for mind games and nothing else.

also to see if the 2 60win seasons were all james..

Unless the Lakers make some big moves I don't think Lebron will have to worry about seeing the Lakers in the finals anytime soon, especially with Mike Brown as coach.

Great hire... for me to poop on! Ya know who's kicking the wall right now? Byron Scott. He went to the Cavs not knowing if Lebron would be there and now they blow. Lakers totally would have hired B.Scott over M.Brown. Scott is an ex Laker for one and he took the Nets to 2 finals. He's a better coach period.

90% of the coaches in the league are better.

Mike Brown is a weak coach that can't control superstars and is constantly outcoached.

He does defense, that's it.

Byron Scott would be a better coach for sure but I wouldn't want him running the Lakers either. He runs a Pick and roll centric offense and the Lakers are coming off a year in which they were abysmal when they used the pick and roll. Not a good fit. I would like Mike Brown if he was hired as maybe an assistant, but he's not head coach material.

This puts the nail in the coffin in the Triangle offense. I dont see Shaw coming back to the Laker organization.

Now the Lakers will have to relearn a brand new offense with a horrible coach and the team will be one year older. The Lakers were in for a tough season, but this just makes it even worse.

I don't get it either. this is NOT the change we need right now but we gotta work with what we have now. They said we're going to run like the Spurs offense now or some bs like that but we'll see what happens

There goes my hopes for another title for a long time. He is a bad coach, poor decision maker and can't control players. There is a reason he isn't in Cleveland anymore.

Except that Mike Brown has a long list of poor decisons in critical momnets of games and has been unable to deal with players

Also this isn't the "Showtime" the Lakers are built on. They're supposed to put on a show not just win games. That's why special people can coach in LA and others can't.

It's not the same situation as Boston

Doc Rivers also lucked out by having Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen fall in his lap. I remember before they came to Boston, Rivers was on the hot seat.

I think Mike Brown is a good coach, but I don't think he's the right fit for the Lakers...and Kobe. It's interesting that Kobe didn't have a say on this. It makes me wonder what's happening behind the scenes and may indicate a rocky relationship between the front office and Kobe. I wish Mike Brown a lot of success, but I just feel that it won't turn out well. Also, a lot of Brown's success was because of "you-know-who." And Kobe is getting older. All I can say is that Mike Brown needs Superman to come and save him! ;)

Cool, so does this mean I could use Derrick Rose being distracted by the PED story as an excuse for why the Bulls aren't winning games?

Even if Pau played well it's no guarantee that the Lakers would've got past the Mavs since Dirk is playing out of his mind.

Let's be honest.... without the top players being put together none of these coaches would be successful. A stoned Jack Nicholson could have coached the Lakers to many of the Rings Phil Jackson has. They had the team... Kobe, Gasol etc... same with Jackson in when he was in Chicago with Jordan, Pippen etc...

Doc Rivers was never considered a big time coach until he had a roster of Pierce, Allen, KG and Co. I'm sure the Heat coach is decent... but any coach could win with those 3. It's all about the players when all is said and done when it comes to winning in the NBA. Ya gotta have the horses.

difference is.. Rose is not a proven champion...he was kinda weak in the playoffs against miami .. he is the only star in the team.

You're delusional. Stop making excuses, the Lakers were just outplayed. They weren't just beaten they were swept and in game 4 they didn't even put up a fight. I don't see how you can possibly say they're going to the finals with any bum as a coach when they had the best coach of all-time this year (and a guy who is known for his ability to control egos and personalities to boot) and got crushed in the second round.

If they make some changes to the team I could change my mind but there's no way this team as currently constructed will even be the favorites in the west next year. Unless they get Dwight Howard the window's starting to close for the Lakers.

But don't use that line of thinking to belittle what Phil Jackson has accomplished as a coach. Yes he had Jordan, Pippen, Shaq and Kobe, but as Bill Simmons put it, clearly, eleven titles means something. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/110513

As a long time Laker fan, I will say LA just got flatout beat and exposed. Pau wasn't playing well and Kobe is getting older, combined with a below average bench and you got a recipe for a sweep. Pau on his best day couldn't guard Dirk and the Mavs bench was just too good. The Lakers need not only a GOOD coach but some retooling, right now Brown it NOT good and without some major moves LA won't be in the finals for a while.

Exactly

The Lakers had top 3 talent in all of the playoffs, the most playoff experience in the playoffs, and a coaching staff with the most experience and what did it get them?

Beaten and exposed

The new coach is going to have to build a lot up because these Lakers are a sorry bunch of regular season wonders and that's it

It means he had great teams playing for him 11 times. Ya never saw P.Jackson take a mediocre team and make them better. He only went to teams that were STACKED with talent! It's like saying Joe Torre was a great manager because he won with the Yankees and their 200 million dollar roster. Torre was a losing manager before the Yankees and after when he went to the Dodgers. Why? Because he didn't have the TALENTED PLAYERS that's why. I have nothing against P.Jackson or J.Torre.... but if we are being honest, all they did was sit there and watch their All Stars bringing home the Rings for them.

A good coach to me is a coach that take a bad or mediocre team and makes them better. Not just going to a team so loaded with talent that any coach could win with them. Ya know when you tip your hat to a coach... when a team like the SF Giants wins it all. Bruce Bochy the SF manager gets a ton of credit when his team goes all the way. Why should P.Jackson get that much credit when the years he won he had the BEST team in the league? Sorry I think it's pretty easy to belittle his rings. Pretty much any NBA coach would get a ring with the talent he's had in his Championship years. Whatever. I could so care less about P.Jackson and the Lakers anyway.

What's with all the denial? The Lakers got owned hard, looking at the 4-0 scoreboard everyone can see that. It wasn't just "well if we tweaked this, if we just did this we could have won" As for them not contacting Kobe on the decision, who cares, he's old, he's on the downward spiral, the team is concerned with the future and will eventually move on from #24. Also wouldn't he just pick a coach he could bully and pretty much let HIM run the team? Nice job Mitch.

You dont tweak a 4-0 sweep that was total domination every game.

The team will be roughly the same with a new coach and a new offensive system. Its not gonna be pretty. They will make the playoffs on pure talent alone, but they aint winning the ship.

I'm actually really curious, because i'm another doubter that a coach can make the big of a difference...........well actually PJ making a big difference with the All-star teams he has coached. We'll see if learning a new offensive system is such a big deal, i mean at the end of the day you have 5 guys trying to put a ball through a hoop, how hard can it be to adjust? You're getting paid millions to practice it every day for christ sake!

ask MJ and Scottie how much a good coach and system means. Before they had Phil they were bounced out of the playoffs 5 times and once Phil got there that's when the championships started rollin' in

Jaysonguy

top 3 talents? kobe ok

randolph...nowitztki..garnett..even chris bosh...are all above pau gasol in the playoffs this year...the guy was disgusting to watch...saw his change in his on court attitude right from the preseason... guy basically threw the games..

andrew bynum has never even been an allstar! he is always injured or limited...yes he is great but thats the reality..

exposed? maybelike in the inquirer...gasol butthurt by kobe..throws games in toilet...on page 3...collects bets in las vegas day after(wouldn't be surprised)
