Well technically there is a "team" being the drivers and pitcrew, and there is a front office for all of those teams.

Not to mention the mental and physical conditioning you have to be in, to drive a few hundred miles @ 200mph in temps over 100 degrees in-car.

Go ahead and keep telling yourself that. Guarentee that you could not do what they do without crashing. You have to be in mental shape. I didn't mention anything about physical since you don't need to be in top physical shape but you do see those guys sweating when they exit the car. Just because they are sitting there does not mean they are not getting a work out by handling a 3500lb car at those speeds.

Everything that ask some sort of skill can be considered as sport. Nascar included.

I agree. There just isn't enough physical exertion. And don't tell me that it's so tough to drive in a circle for a few hours. I've driven cross country on several occasions, sometimes for 12 hours straight. It's not fun, but it definitely isn't exercise. I think walking 36 holes of golf is tougher than driving Nascar.

Some sort of skill? That would include cooking, video games, even sex. Actually, almost everything would be a sport if skill is the only requirement. No, sir, you are dead wrong there.

Look, you are entitled to your own opinion but you make it seem like any joe blow can drive these cars. You have to think how fast they are going, the weight of the car, the heat coming off the car and how close they are driving to one another. They drive literally inches away from another and the slightest mistake could be the end. It's not as easy as driving your luxury car across country at a steady 65mph on a flat road surface when they have to drive on banking.

I said "can be considered" and not "has to be considered". And yes video games can be considered as a sport, have you ever heard of the WCG? of the MLG? and of the awesome starcraft tournament which has just has been finished here: gsi.gomtv.com ?

Or Poker.

At least Nascar I can give them credit for having endurance and pushing a machine to it limit but POKER is just stupid and need to get off TV. Never thought gambleholics would make it on TV. Still I dont believe Nascar is a sport but doesnt mean it is bad.

Of course I've heard of them, but just b/c somebody holds a tournament doesn't mean the game is considered a sport. There are cooking tournaments, poker tournaments, and dart tournaments. Are those all sports?

Nope, it's a sport imo. You have to be in good shape, it takes a lot of skill, it's played outdoors, you have to have a hell of a lot of knowledge about the cars (and everything else) and be very experienced to be good... Chess and poker are games. Nascar and even golf have to be considered sports.

Yes driving at 200 mph with 50 other cars driving at 200 mph is much easier than walking in a golf course.

I don't think NASCAR is a sport either, but it's incredibly tough and requires tremendous skill.

I don't know anything about nascar so i won't try but i will say F1 is as physical and mentally challenging as any sport everything the car does puts the driver under extreme g-forces some tracks they reach 6 g's. Then combine that with the fact they have to wear 3 layers of fire proof clothing in places like Malaysia where the cockpit temperature is around 50 degrees C and 80% humidity the average F1 driver during a race will lose around 3kg of body-weight just through sweating. They have also got to concentrate 100% from start to finish while looking after there fuel, tyres, talking to the pit crew and all drivers now change settings at different parts of every lap looking for every tenth.

While it may not be a sport the drivers are phenomenal athletes and saying they are not is just stupid to be honest.

Sport - Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sport

I'd say that Nascar fits this description

nascar requires you to hold the wheel to the left for like 5 hours straight, i will say Nascar needs mental endurance and i guess some physical but how good you are at racing is how well you cheat

Nascar is not a sport in the traditional sense, it's a motorsport like F1. It doesn't have to be compared with athletic and team based activity because they're seperate entities. The parts inside each car and quality of craftsmanship are just as important if not moreso than a driver's individual skill and endurance, hence the title of motorsport. I'm pretty sure that's the accepted terminology for associations like Nascar. Mechanical and human performance combined versus human ability alone and whatnot.

Ok now that post was just stupid in my opinion, you are welcome to yours but baseball is probably the hardest sport out of all of them. I know many people are probably saying no football because you are taking a beating from 300+ pound guys but its only 16 games and yea you have your preseason and training but baseball your are playing 162 games a year + spring training plus you have to be in shape before spring training starts. Every player has to be ready at all times because you never know when you are going to be involved in a play, when you have to cut off a throw to the plate, throw a 100mph fast ball or hit that 100mph fastball. You have to be in great physical and mental shape, many guys cant even get to HS ball because they are to afaraid to get hit by a 90+ mph pitch. I took a fastball at about 95mph to the head and after that I never feared that ball again. NASCAR is a sport and takes skill and strong mental ability, I learned that riding in a NASCAR car last year at full speed but baseball in my opinion is the true sport. It takes skill that surpases all the other games in my mind. Having played baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, tennis, golf, bowling, raquetball, and driven in a NASCAR thats my own personal opinion.

Watching car racing is boring unless you are the one doing the racing. However, NASCAR sucks compared to Formula One...I can't believe NASCAR gets more hoopla than F-1. I hope its just a fad that will die out.

So true.

To stay on topic, this thread has actually convinced me that NASCAR is a sport, sort of, the comparisons to golf got to me. I still think it's as boring as poker to watch though.

I don't think of it as a sport either, but it takes some physical conditioning. I think the earlier post about just sticking motor infront of sport works fine.

I agree, any "sport" in which when u ask guys why they couldn't win that day they answer: "well my car wasn't driving good today" isn't a sport.

In basketball the ball is the same for everyone, as in baseball, hockey, football. On the other hand "teams" like Hendricks Motorsports provide better equipment to their drivers. Nascar isn't a sport. Imput: Car>Driver

You can give a car that is "handling" well on that day to any driver and most of them would win. Now, give a crappy car to Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon and they have a slim to no chance.
