You'd rather he just be a mute if he's required to take some of the more aggressive treatments?

You don't even need to spend time in cancer treatment centers to know that when you have cancer of the throat any sort of talking, eating, even normal swallowing can tear the tissue to the point that it will always be an issue later in life.

I can affirm that this is indeed what a relative of mine was told when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, so I'm reopening the thread.

Let's move beyond the misinterpretation here. There's still a lot to be discussed about this bit of news, rather than elaborating on the possible malintent.

I hope to God no one in either one of your families have to go through throat cancer because neither one of you are willing to learn about it

ill tell you this right now, and then we will see who is wrong and who is right. its like saying to a woman who has breast cancer "wow, i hope she goes and gets breast implants because breast cancer is bad". its the same thing with throat cancer, not necessarily he is going to lose his voice and needs to use sign language to communicate. My mother had (but was treated) throat cancer and she can talk normally. Throat cancer does not mean that he has to go out and take sign language courses in order to keep living and communicate with his squad. You were completely wrong in saying that line and you know it. everyone agrees and your trying to avoid it.

It's one thing for the doctor to suggest that when you're diagnosed, but posting that as the first thing here did come off as a little tacky. Really, what does "I hope he starts learning sign language now" add to the conversation?

I'm sorry, but I don't think it's the same thing at all as the suggestion that breast cancer requires implants. Suggesting that a cancer patient who might lose his ability to communicate learn another forum of communication is a suggestion of utility, not a rude statement about the looks of the cancer patient after surgery. A breast cancer patient can get along withouthis/her breasts, but few of us would function well without the ability to communicate. All of us have to be careful to discern the difference.

In any case, talk about the news, not the offensive interpretation of Jasonguy's opening line. This thread was supposed to be about the former, not the latter.
