Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract voided and he will be allowed to become a free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, according to an NFL Players Association document.

Asomugha's deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn't achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 -- and he didn''t.

His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn't achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player.

To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.

He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn't have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.

He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.

SOURCE: ESPN by Adam Shefter

What are your thoughts that arguably the best defensive back in the NFL will now become a free agent? Let the speculation begin, where will he sign?

I can hear Mike Tannenbaum wringing his hands to have Asomugha replace Cromartie

30 teams should be trying to get him(The Jets have good corner backs they don't really need him, and Packers DBs are pretty good also) I don't care if there is a cap issue. You make room for a guy that can essentially shut down an entire side of the field. So yes I'd be happy if either the Giants or Colts honestly made a move for him. I doubt they will though.

The Jets don't care about this guy... the secondary is very solid as it is.

They will 100% be going after PASS RUSHERS in the draft and FA market. If they had a natural pass rush from the front 4/D line they would/could be scary.

It will be a national disaster if he goes to the Eagles. I would love him on the Cowboys, but if that can't happen go to any other team except the Eagles. With Asomugha, the Eagles defense would be pretty intimidating and would probably propel them to the Super Bowl, that can't happen.

1) Eagles are a SB contender without Asomugha. 2) If he goes to the Eagles, Philly will become a Dynasty* *If they can get Vick and DeSean a long term contract

I know they're a contender but they're not a favorite at this point for this year or next year, and that's because of their defense. They get a lot of turnovers, but they give up too many yards, have a terrible redzone defense, and Sean McDermott is pretty awful. So with Asomugha, they obviously become a much improved defense.

Yep... pretty much. You know the Patriots have the "Bend but don't break" idea on Defense? The Eagles Defense has the "Allow 28 points and hope the Offense can score more" With the best Zone corner in the game, and arguably the best Man-to-Man corner and the Offense as fearsome as the Greatest show on turf, the sky would be the limit :D

A dynasty? LOL. How about they make it to the big game first. 1 out of 5 for Reid, not very good numbers.

Seahawks should really go after him. Trufant would be a decent #2, but he can't stand up to the league's best WRs at his #1 spot.

A team that absolutely needs him is Houston. But he would be welcomed in Dallas, too :P With Newman getting older, and Jenkins playing like a inconsistant turd. IDK

Well what the Jets need are safeties...but I would love for them to have Revis AND Asomugha. And let Cromartie go or have him play the nickel.

Would love to see the Panthers spend some money here and pick him up. If Marshall and Gamble leave then we will have a definite need for DBs.

And Al Davis wonders why even the fans dont like him. We still could have had a fine year with Cable being fired, but now the pass defense is going to be worse off. Way to go you loser. Whenever the Raiders come close to being a contender Al Davis decides he wants to be a loser, force this idiot out. I dont care whose fault this is, Al should have stopped it and kept him!

Well... it's possible... 0 Interceptions this year... 14 tackles... 0 fumble recoveries... but no QB even throws his way.

A lot of what makes a those types of players good dont show up in those stats. Even if he had an off year he is still good and can disrupt pass games. He rarely picked off guys anyway, he only had 3 total the past 3 years.

Shane Lechner might be leaving too. He said it was a terrible decision to let Cable to then the Raiders quickly signed a punter. Bush and Gallery might be leaving too. But who knows, probably just talk.

He doesn't win enough games in the playoffs to go back to foxboro. All those beat downs were in the playoffs. Well except for the 01 beat downs, but that Colts team doesn't count. They were garbage.

Let's go Niners! Everyone in the league needs/wants a shutdown corner. Let's see how it all pans out. But he would be a great addition to an alreadypretty good defense.
