I really hope they don't get a new name. They are my second favorite team.. I like the Redskins and I understand that people are offended by it, but it's not meant to be an offensive name.

Not meant to be? I dunno, that's some pretty shaky ground there. I'd say it's more that they were given the name during a period when most people really didn't care about offending. To me, they are the most flagratn case of insensitivity. I mean there are teams like the Blackhawks that are named after an actual tribe, then teams like the Indians that are saddled with a name that comes from Colombus' ignorance, then there's Redskins. I mean, could you imagine if someone named a team the Blackeys or something to that effect? The implications are disgraceful. I just wonder why those same standards don't apply to native Americans.
This is rediculous, are you serious? Please tell me you are joking. Not meant to be? I dunno, that's some pretty shaky ground there. Will NEVER happen. Too much history w/ that franchise. If they'd only been around a decade or two maybe it would be arguable, but not w/ that team. Hell Florida State, who has only been a respectable football program since the 80's aren't changing their name. And they even have a "Seminole" riding a horse w/ a flaming arrow as their mascot.
I agree with you 100% The franchise has too much reputation and too much history to change it's name now, at least in that city. Will NEVER happen. Too much history w/ that franchise. Completely agree, name change is needed. Lets see a team named the Whiteys or the Yellows? Not meant to be? I dunno, that's some pretty shaky ground there. Completely agree, name change is needed. Lets see a team named the Whiteys or the Yellows? Or we could ignore it and focus on something important?BTW, how are they under fire? Where did you get this?MoonMarvel
There's been an ongoing lawsuit against the team by a group of Native Americans that just got a ruling recently. The judge ruled in favor of the Skins, but he/she(can't remember which) sorta skirted the issue by saying the statute of limitations had passed. The plaintiffs plan to appeal the decision.

What should I be joking about? I don't think there's anyone this side of the Klan that would support naming a sports team after a minority group in a disparaging way, so why is the exception Native Americans? It's not even like the Blackhawks or Seminoles, at least those are named after actual tribes, but Redskins? Could you please explain to me how that isn't overtly racist?

Completely agree, name change is needed. Lets see a team named the Whiteys or the Yellows? Cleveland Browns? :P Redskins can see the problem. But some of these go too far. Like Marquette team used to be the Warriors, not Golden Eagles. Warriors? Now that was a stupid reason to name change.I'll never let them change the name of a team in my town! *goes to purchase Bullets tickets*Engrish_MajorPeople will always call them the Redskins, no matter how much some people cry over spilt milk. If it wasn't for the logo nobody would know.

The Browns were named for a fan submission in honor of the organization's inaugural head coach, vice president, and general manager Paul Brown.

Didn't they already change the logo? I thought they wore arrows on their helmets now instead of the traditional logo?

Nope, changed it back.Breaking News : Wild Grizzly Bears plan to sue Chicago Bears. One of the many things Bears are pissed about is the orange bear logo, for they claim Bears have never been orange with blue.
Also the LA Angels are to be sued by God himself. Court TV has full coverage of this.

ha ha! Nice...Well, I don't think you can change the name either due to the history. But look at Syracuse University, they had to lose the Orangemen nickname and change it to Orange. And they have history too...
