Former NBA player John Amaechi, who recently announced he's gay, was just interviews on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption. Amaechi said he thought the idea of seperate showers for gay players was absurd, and he compared it to segregation. He says homosexuals aren't predators, and straight players have nothing to worry about.
I completely disagree. The reason we seperate men and women in shower rooms is two-fold: 1)we worry about sexual "predators" (as Amaechi put it); and 2)we want to respect people's privacy. So although we haven't heard any cases of gay players sexually assualting straight players, there is no doubt that straight player's privacy rights are being violated. If I was allowed in an open shower with women, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't allow it just because I'd be "looking and not touching."
Physical violations aren't the only kind we're worried about. Amaechi is way off base here. Your thoughts?
*EDIT: I'm not sure why, but the words gay and "homosexual" were censored from my topic title, so I was forced to misspell the word. How old are we that we can't use these words responsibly?
