Former NBA player John Amaechi, who recently announced he's gay, was just interviews on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption.  Amaechi said he thought the idea of seperate showers for gay players was absurd, and he compared it to segregation.  He says homosexuals aren't predators, and straight players have nothing to worry about.

I completely disagree.  The reason we seperate men and women in shower rooms is two-fold: 1)we worry about sexual "predators" (as Amaechi put it); and 2)we want to respect people's privacy.  So although we haven't heard any cases of gay players sexually assualting straight players, there is no doubt that straight player's privacy rights are being violated.  If I was allowed in an open shower with women, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't allow it just because I'd be "looking and not touching."

Physical violations aren't the only kind we're worried about.  Amaechi is way off base here.  Your thoughts?

*EDIT: I'm not sure why, but the words gay and "homosexual" were censored from my topic title, so I was forced to misspell the word.  How old are we that we can't use these words responsibly?

Absolutely. If I was in a female shower, don't you think they would feel violated? Even knowing I'm not going to sleep with all (or any?) of the women, I would still be inclined to look. The same goes for gay players.

What if it's something you've been doing without incident since junior high? Would you make gay athletes in school wait to shower before the straight kids finish, lest anyone feel violated? Or just build separate shows for the gays? And what about bisexuals? It sounds like you're basing your argument on the assumption that gay men are more comparable to females than other men. You have a point with the discomfort that would arise with openly gay athletes, but you're really gonna have to try and explain yourself better because that just line of reasoning doesn't fly.

I think they should be seperate because that is the reason we seperate Men and Women. It is to protect the privacy of people.

I see where you are coming from and that is the exact reason that no players openly admit to being homosexual while playing professional sports, they generally wait until after their carrer. Also I am sure that some players feel that if they are open about it then the fans will turn on them and possibly team mates, though that is not a fair way to treat anyone thats just how our world currently is, that way of living is still not accepted by many.

impractical and unneeded. There are probably gay players in the pro sports leagues right now (not to mention in the college and high school ranks) who are sharing locker rooms with their straight teammates. The vast majority are probably closeted, but the point is that it's happening RIGHT NOW. (omg murlow hide yourself and your children! /sarcasm) So what's the big deal?

Just because it's happening doesn't make it right. If I dressed up like a women, fooled everyone, and walked into a women's locker room, would it be okay? Of course not. The problem isn't whether people are aware that their rights are being violated, it's that the violation is happening at all. I agree there is nothing we can do about gay players who refuse to be honest, but if we're aware of it, they need to be seperated for showering purposes.

I guess we should also segregate athletes with race... then lets segregate them further by the religion-- god forbids I cant stand his religious values--- than oh lets segregate that guy becuz he's vegetarian... come on... all this segration nonsense is ridiculous... the only plausible segregation that I condone is men/women having separate locker rooms.. and only because I have a lot of women friends.. and based on how guys treat a lot of girls with the unnessary fondling and groping... good riddance we have that.

The difference is that I actually gave a logical reason for separating gay athletes. You didn't support any of your absurd proposals.
