I was talking to my father, and he told me he liked basketball better when there was no 3 pointers. He said a team that has been outplayed all game can make a comeback too easily. It seemed to make sense. So I ask, is basketball better off with no 3 point rule?

I don't really know .... but I guess having the 3-pointer there makes guarding those outside shooters even more important and that helps open up driving lanes for players on the court.

I think more than just the 3 point line has changed.

Nah. I prefer that the 3-point line be in. However, since I never saw games back when the line didn't exist, it is hard to make a fair comparison.

The 3 point line changed the way the game was played. Now you have teams that cater their offensive attack to their outside bombers. I think it helped evolve the game. I like the 3 point line.

I think they should add a four and five point line. It could be like Bozo's grand prize game.

Huh.... why?

It was a joke!!! If not, Yao would score and then hold the ball up top for the rest of the game LOL.

Definitely not. The 3 point line adds a whole bunch of extra strategy, dimension, and excitement. When the NBA copied the old ABA and added it in, it was one of the smartest moves they ever made.

I prefer the 3-point line as it made new forms of defensive and offensive strategies evolve in the NBA (even though zone defense is still in its infancy).

Couldn't say it better than this. There would be little benefit to having pure shooters without it. Teams would probably be nothing but freight trains and big men.

Nah because they can change a game more than a 2 pointer can (obviously). If you we're down by 3 before 79' with like 10 seconds left you we're pretty screwed but now you can get rid back into a tie, if you we're down by 2 then the best you could do was tie it, now you can win it/take the lead.

It always gives a team a shooting chance, like you said back before if a team got up a few points near the end it was really hard to catch up.

The games that I watched without the 3-point line were pretty much a drive into the lane and shoot floaters or go for layups. Occasionally someone would take a 10 ft jumpshot but guys playing realized why take a 15 or 20 footer when you can take a 5-10 foot shoot and have a bettter % of making it. Kind of boring in some ways, and once a good team was up by 10 or 12 then the game seems really out of reach. Some people use the argument there are players who do nothing except take 3 pointers and can't do much else. That is true, but most of us know once you guard these type of players up close most of them can't hit a 3 with someone all over them. Makes you wonder how high Pistol Pete's scoring average would have been in college if they had a three point line cause that guy could shoot from anywhere.

I love the 3 point rule. It keeps games exciting and makes for some epic endings.

It's kind of difficult to judge, having never seen a game without it. But it's the same for both teams, so while it is changing the game it's not giving anyone an advantage. When all those March Madness games come down to three-point buzzer beaters at the end it's extremely exciting, but without the 3-pointer none of that could happen.
