I've gotta go with Kobe. people hate on him but there's no denying he's the best player on what is now considered one of the best teams in the league.

He had them right in the hunt with Bynum emerging, and held them close to the top once he went out.

And since the stealing of pau, they're now stronger than ever and look like the team to beat out west.

Nobody leads a team more than this guy and without him, the Lakers wouldn't be a playoff team. he deserves it!!!

Call me biased if you want, based on my avatar, but I'm just looking at the stats here:

Kobe Bryant

PPG: 27.8 / RPG: 6 / APG: 5.3

Chris Paul

PPG: 20.7 / RPG: 4 / APG: 10.8

LeBron James

PPG: 30.1 / RPG: 8.2 / APG: 7.5

I mean sure, Paul is averaging 3 more assists per game, but LeBron is leading in PPG and RPG between the three front-runners.

MVP isn't given to the guy with the biggest stats, like in football or baseball.

if you take out chris paul out of the hornets they wont even make in the playoffs in the east. when they have chris paul they are the #1 seed in the west. to me i think its easy, but i think its going to lebron or kobe just because they are more popular.

Have you watched the Cavaliers play? LeBron lead a team of only himself and one other starter (Zydrunas Ilgauskas), 4 bench players and 2 players who were brought up from the NBA's developmental league, the night before the game, to a victory over the Wizards on Friday Night. Sure, you can say the Wizards aren't a great team, but the Cavs didn't even REALLY have a bench.

And as far as those "stats" go, they show he's contributing more points than Kobe or Paul, he's crashing the boards more often than Kobe or Paul and he's averaging more assists than Kobe, all in the process of leading his team that couldn't win a single game this season without him. He's had six triple doubles so far this season, on two occasions where they were back-to-back (the last time a player achieved this feat was Magic Johnson in 1988.) He's also currently considered the best closer in the league (averaging more than 9 points in the 4th quarter.) He plays unselfish basketball and only takes over when he needs to swing the momentum for the team. In my opinion, he's an excellent candidate for league MVP.

I think Paul too but if you do put the factor of popularity into the equation then yeah Lebron and Kobe are front runners and nobody else is even close.

Not sure if anyone has really stated this, but LeBron has lead his team to quite a good record. He does have some help, but most of it has been injured most of this season. I have been to a few Cavs games this year and you can just tell the injuries are hurting them. One of the games I went to about a month ago had key players like Varejo and Pavlovic out(still are) and players like Hughes and Gibson with lingering injuries. That and I have no idea what Marshall was doing. This caused players like Damon Jones and Eric Snow to play often and a lot. You know injuries are bad when Snow is starting to take a handful of shots. LeBron has kept them going and staying strong.

At that, I would agree with most in saying that LeBron, Kobe or Paul should get it. All three have been fantastic.

My vote is CP3, look what he has done to his team, he made them from not even making playoff's to top three in the western conference, that's quite an achievement

Kobe or Paul should be MVP at this point, imo. Lebron suffers from the "Bryant-Nash" rule, defined in the following site.:

I would give it to Kobe. Hes gotten double his assist totals from last year.

Next i'd give it to Paul Pierce because hes dominating in Boston (sadly)

Lastly I'd give it to Steve Nash, hes always on the bid.

I would really love to see Billups on that list in a couple of years.

Paul has led his team to a better record in a much tougher conference, and he doesn't have much of a surrounding cast himself. Lebron is obviously an MVP caliber player, but he's never going to get the award as long as he is on a team that's out of championship contention. Dirk didn't have the gaudiest numbers last year, but he was the best player on the best regular season team. That's what it takes to get the award. If the NBA always gave the award to the player who puts up huge stats on bad teams, Kobe would have won the last few with ease. However, he has yet to get one in his career.

Oh, and my Wizards are as bad as any team in the league without Caron and Gilbert. I wouldn't feel too good about that victory.

The article is right and that is how I would judge a MVP. How could somebody be so valuable to a team that is not winning compared to the players who just as valuable and his team is winning. Nash got the 1st MVP because he led his team to the best record in the league after the Suns not making the playoffs the previous year with the same team. Without Nash on the floor, the suns are a completely different team. The following year he improved his gameplay and kept his team at the top of league again. It helps when the player gets injured and your team loses. Lebron this year and Kobe last year got hit by injuries but it doesnt mean you should go on a shooting spree and not try to get your new started involved. As hyped as lebron is he should have a better record just because he is in the east. This year Kobe is a MVP but with Gasol and improved Bynum will hurt him at the end. That is why I have Chris Paul as the MVP but I think who ever has the better record will win. Hornet would not make the playoffs like last year without Paul. They almost made it last year when Paul came back and had them running. Kobe needs to stay at the top of the league for the MVP. How valuable are you to your team if you cant make them win consistently? MVP is a player that makes his team win and win alot.

Cavaliers record is a little misleading for LeBron's MVP candidacy b/c I think he missed six games this year. The Cavs are 0-6 in those games.

Like you said, "It helps when the player gets injured and your team loses."

James, Bryant, Garnett and Paul are the contenders, and they're all worthy for different reasons. LeBron has amazing stats and can beat teams singlehandedly, KG changed the culture of Boston bball on both ends of the court leading them from worst to first, Kobe is arguably the best player in the game in his prime on a good squad and Paul is having a brilliant season, he's the best PG in the leauge and he's the reason the Hornets are so surprisingly tough.

Honestly I can't really choose between those four, they're all worthy. It's going to come down to personal preference if the second half plays out much like the first did.

Kobe Bryant is not the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER. He is an amazing player, but if you take him off of the Lakers, they are still a pretty good team. Lebron James is the heart and soul of the Cavaliers. They were a bunch of nobodys, that never did anything with any other team (until this recent trade of course). Lebron led them to an NBA Finals. The cavaliers have not won a single game without him this year. At any point he could have a triple double and I would say he is one of the top 5 passers in the NBA. Kobe Bryant is not known for being a passer, he is known for taking a mass amount of shots. Chirs Paul has also done an amazing job with the hornets. I think he would be second in voting behind James if it were my decision because he has also led a bad team previously to a good season, but he has more talent than James has.

You have to look at how much the player affects your team and their value to your team. A previous poster stated that in order to be MVP, you have to be able to win a lot and a lot. That is not true. If I put Michael Jordan on a team with all high school players, and they won 30 games, while he averaged 50 points per game, compared to if Kobe won 60 games with their current team, than I would say MJ should win MVP. Just because a player wins more games, does not mean they are most valuable. If you took MJ off of that team, than they would win 0 games (hypothetically).
