go for the easiest first. So don't go for the SNES ones right away. Maybe start out with VII or VIII. Then move on to IX, X, and the SNES titles (I - VI)
1-3 are actually NES titles not SNES.  Anyways the order shouldn't really matter.   The earlier titles aren't that difficult.   Just go with whichever ones you can get your hands on would be my advice.
Of course, if you can you should get them all, but that is quite hard. The easiest FF to get right now would probably be FFX. However, my favorite games were Final Fantasy VI, VII, and VIII. Also, if you're not intrested in playing all the FFs (O.o) then I recommend that you stay as far away as you can from FFII (unless you get Dawn of Souls for GBA). Finally, some of the older FFs are starting to turn up on GBA as remakes so they can easily be picked up that way. Finally, if you can't find the older ones, try looking at Ebay, but if you do, don't be surprised by outrageous prices.
It is almost impossible to get a copy of FFVII for the PS right now and if you find one it will cost a lot. The easiest to find is FFX and FFX-2. Also, you can find FFVIII on most of the online store.
VIII is for Playstation, i havn't played it yet cuase im playing IX first, but i heard that most people love it, its final fantasy so i think you can trust it.
SquareSOFT has some other great titles becides final fantasy i say SOFT because games made by Square ENIX **** suck, some of these grear titles are xenosaga, chrio cross and vagrant story but if you want a FF game buy 7 and 8 if you like those buy 10 BUT DONT BUY 9 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FINAL FANTASY 9 IS THE WORST GAME EVER, IT IS THE ANTICHRIST
I would go for VII, VIII, IX, and X. Well thats for new school. Old school, III (SNES) definitly, and Original FF I. Then for handheld FF tactics advanced. There you go!!!
I reccomend getting Final Fantasy VII, X, and VII. I just started playing IX, and i like it so far. If your looking for a good handheld game, my personal favorites are IV and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Consider getting XII when it is released also. That game looks AMAZING!
Final Fantasy VII for big screen, or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on GBA ( or PSP if you know how :) ).. but if you think that they are too old for you - go with Final Fantasy X so you can get addicted to it and then you'll want to finish all others FFs like most of us did :)Â

Disgrace is the perfect word to explain what FFX-2 was for the FF serie.
i started off with ffx-2 wats wrong with that i got the storyline just fine well except for the block that looked like tidus part i didnt quite get that part
Get FFX. Its the best and easy to pick up. Or you should try FFVII. If they both seem a littl eoverwhelming or hard, pick up FFX-2. It's very easy and short but don't expect a great story or challenge
