It's a little known fact that the RSX is actually a 3.5" hard drive filled with drivers and OpenGL emulators, spot-welded into a PCI Express port.

Seriously though, NEVER use a price of something you got in a non-official store in China. As someone who has worked with chinese companies a lot, let me tell you that there is a big chance that they're selling it to you below cost, or that all the R&D (which in the technology sector can be a lot more than the manufacture and materials part) is not being added.

Actually, I meant that your anecdote, true or not (not that I really doubt you), is completely meaningless, as there are so many possibilities on exactly why did a 1TB hard disk cost $100. Deriving that a 1TB HD must cost less than $100 to the companies making it is a rather flawed logic, especially since the drive was obtained in China.

Reality check, man: You don't know more about Chinese production costs and environment than ANY analyst. Trust me on this one. 

There is a budding black market of "surplus" and similar merchandise in China. I've been there. You can get some stuff for pretty much raw material cost, and sometimes even less. One common situation is that the factory reports "defective" units to their contractor (say, Seagate, for a Hard Drive), which aren't really defective, and then are sold for whatever they can muster in the chinese market. There are other possibilities, too, even legal ones, like a liquidation.

The console drives are laptop sized. They are more expensive than desktop ones.  

Meh I am going to China this summer, hopefully I can find a deal like that. $100 US dollars there are like $1000 here considering the standards of living.TheWalrusBeast

fortunatly, we can update the ps3s hard drive. Just as well as you can with the Xbox 360s.....oh wait.....you cant.

I could seriously never use that much space in my lifetime. I have used maybe 30 GB's tops for only movies and music, games would for me on a gaming PC probably take up that much if not more space. Still though my laptop has 100 GB's and I have yet to fill half of it (then again I also have 3 partitions, one of which is 14 GB's for Linux or Mac OSX and the others are for backups and Windows)

Well the PS3 uses laptop drives, the 360 doesnt so realistically the 360 drives are the only ones that are overpriced. Laptop drives cost more because they are smaller form factors, as with all laptop hardware they require special modifications to fit the exact same specifications as their desktop counterparts.
