though I agree it's impressive, but I have to admit, X360 fans are somewhat right about it's not as impressive as Gears / Mass Effect.
I don't think the PS3 can produce the above graphics. It's already choking in Splinter Cell: Double Agent (a much less demanding game)

I disagree. I think that most developers have not figured out how to make the PS3 do it's best stuff yet.
And to me that's it's biggest problem. The longer it takes developers to figure out the hardware, the longer the wait between really impressive titles. I don't want to pay top dollar for a console and the have to wait a year before the game library is up to speed. It's better to wait until the library suits you and then make your purchase.
Unfortunately for Sony, people like me are choosing to do exactly that.
The good thing is I have all 3 current gen systems. So I can afford to wait for the PS3.
However if it's true that developers still didn't learn the PS3, and say by 2009/10 they'll manage to tap its theoretical power, then I'm afraid by that time we won't be as impressive by current gen graphics and we'll be anticipating the next XBox that will perhaps debut in 2010.
However, the chances the PS3 can produce those graphics are really slim (even by 2010). I somewhat lost faith in my PS3 after seeing how poorly it performed in Splinter Cell: Double Agent compared to X360.
If you're planning on buying the PS3, then it's better to buy it sooner than later. Cause I don't think the price will drop by May (maybe Christmas this year, and not by much).
I mean you'll pay the same amount of money even if you waited few months. So you might as well buy it now, enjoy GT HD, Motor Storm, etc.. while waiting for the PS3 games that interest you.
That's how I bought mine. I knew eventually I'm going to want one for GT5 and MGS4, and I knew that its price aint dropping any time soon. So I said I might as well buy it now, enjoy GT HD until GT5 and MG4 comes out next year.

i would take 720p @ 60 fps anyday
akuma303x
Hell yeah! Do people even realize the difference between 30fps and 60fps?
Well that's funny, because according to " science " the human eye cant actually precieve a difference between 30 and 60 FPS. so I say 1080p at 30. You have got to be insane! Wanna bet? There is a HUGE difference between 30 and 60 fps. The eye can detect over 60 fps. Believe me!
matters what kind of game. Racing the frames, JRPGs the resolution
but you do relize it doesnt work out like that, 720p at 60 fps is less stressful in most circumstances than 1080p at 30fps. Â
720p @ 60fps for me, by far.
720p means better framerates, better effects, better textures. Because the resolution is less, developers can do more with the graphics without sacrificing framerate.
1080p is good for sports games that only have several highly-detailed models and don't require lots of effects.

Educated_Gamer
true, the question is not literal. It's somewhat simplified using framerate as an example. The intended question (technically) is; "would you rather have resolution over fidelity?"
It's somewhat to drive people to the conclusion of what it means asking for HD in this generation (be it 720p or 1080p) instead of just using standard 480p in widescreen (like what the Wii is doing in their titles).
480p is really sufficient to present superb graphics details (take Final Fantasy the movie as a 480p example).
If it weren't for MS & Sony forcing developers to target HD resolutions. We would've probably seen Kill Zone 2 trailer quality graphics by now. It's a well known fact that the difference between 30fps and 60fps is much more perceptible than the difference between 1080p and 720p, simply because of the way the human brain works and the size of the average TV screen.
While your eye cannot detect every single frame in a 60fps video (even 24fps movies are more than the eye can handle) your brain can detect much higher framerates as sort of a "sixth sense." If you do an a/b comparison of a 30fps and 60fps video, you'll easily be able to spot the 60fps video - it'll just be "smoother" somehow
On the flipside, studies have shown that for the average person to be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on moving images, the person would have to be viewing on at least a 60" screen from at most 6'-7' away. For static images such as photos, it's somewhat easier to tell the difference.Â

Uh, no. I can find plenty of things to do with 600 bucks between now and the holiday season. I'm not waiting for a price drop, I'm waiting for the library to fatten itself up a bit. I really am not that interested in any of the games available right now, so waiting is just fine for me, I have plenty of stuff to keep me occupied until I get a PS3. I would be pissed if I spent that much cash on something and never used it that much except to watch movies. I paid $850 for my X360 (Christmas 2005 shortages) just to play PGR3 (I was basically obssessed about watching PGR3 clips).
The only thing that kept me from paying $1000+ on a PS3 on launch was the lack of decent racing sim game (racing sim is my fav genre along with modern warfare combat flight sims).
To me, it's very difficult to understand how people can resist buying an X360 (for example) after watching gameplay footage of say PGR3 or Gears.
What games do you play currently that are holding you off from buying say an X360?

For the 360: Oblivion, PGR 3, GRAW. Plus XBL had all of this stuff going on during E3. I just felt that it was connected to everything in the right way. It moved me away from my PC to my HDTV. I could look at videos and download some cool demos too..
For the Wii: Zelda, Wii sports. I broke the tradition with the Wii because:
a. It was cheap
b. The way I got it. It was around thanksgiving and I was walking by the Nintendo store. I saw the line and it was short (maybe 15 people, not counting the people in the store) The Wii buzz was just starting, so i decided to stand on line just to see how long I would have to wait. If it was more than a half hour I was gone. 15 minutes later I was at the register. I couldn't pass it up. (And I REALLY wanted to play Zelda)
The PS3's launch titles just don't do it for me and to be honest neither does Lair. And I'm really skeptical about Heavenly Sword. E3 will hopefully get me interested in a PS3 this year.. We'll see.Â
Gimme 720p @ 60fps.
The difference between 30fps and 60fps is far greater IMO than the negligible difference between 1080p and 720p
or if you have a ps3 you can just have 60fps @ 1080pspringz300
same with X360, but that's not the point.Â

Oh, I c, that made sense now. I thought you don't have a next gen console and just waiting only for the PS3.
Anyway, I was speaking in general when saying I don't understand how can gamers resist buying an X360.
Also, what surprises me the most is PS3 fans bashing the X360 whenever they get the chance not paying attention to how poorly their beloved PS3 is performing right now.
I reached to the conclusion that if Sony pulled off a win this gen (became the market leader again) despite this poor first year performance, then there probably won't be any chance left for MS, no matter what they try to please consumers, to take the lead from them ever again.Â
P.S. I too don't have much interest in Lair, and waiting for GS review to make a decision.
Laughs at anyone whos says 1080P @ 30FPS. You realize that framerate is more important then resolution correct? How would you play fighters or action adventure games at 30 FPS? You want to know why PC shooters are seen better then consoles? Console FPS don't run at 60fps normally but on PC they have the option.
Â
The fluidness from 30fps to 60fps is night and day to me. Play Metroid Prime and then go back to Halo just for a quick example since mostly everyone on the boards probably has access to those games.Â
Oh, I c, that made sense now. Oh and just to get back on topic, 60FPS @ 720p for me any day of the week. Games running a 60 just seem more fluid to me...It amazes me how some companies can consistantly nail it while others fail miserably..

very true, I too hope it'll be a tight race this gen ;)
Sigma was confirmed to run at 720P and not 1080P I thought? BlackbondRecently announced it will be 1080p @60FPS.
DMC4 is 720p @ 60 FPS. Heavenly Sword is 720p @ 30 FPSummm DMC4, NGS and Heavenly Sword are all 60 FPS and 1080p. best of both :D go PS3 ! AB_Uppercut
