I own both consoles and decided to get a copy of the game "Dead Space" for the PS3 since according to IGN had faster load times than the Xbox 360 while still maintaining an identical graphical look.

However, before I opened my PS3 copy of the game, I've recently read that some PS3 owners have an issue trying to play this game at 1080p, since it always defaults to 720p. And even though they were able to "force" the game to play 1080p via the PS3's settings display menu, the 1080p actually looked worse than the native 720p.

Is this true? A 720p looking better than 1080p? Any other PS3 owners have this issue?

As weird as this sounds, a lot of people have been saying that's the case. Any other PS3 games encountered this kind of issue?

What about Xbox 360 owners? Anyone who owns a copy of "Dead Space" for Xbox 360 have the same problem? Or is your version of the game playing 1080p resolution? Does it strangely also look better down converted to a 720p?

Both my PS3 and Xbox 360 are connected via HDMI through my Samsung 1080p HDTV. And as much as I would love the faster loading times, I'd rather have a game playing on 1080p.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Both gamse run at 720p, and the consoel uses their internal scaler to upscale the images to the desired resolution. This would mean you get a 720p image on a 1080p resolution. This means runnign it at 1080p will loko the same as running it at 720p unless the scaler has any degredation in quality while expanding each frame.

In other words, its possible for it to look worse, if the scalers are over worked, which could also cause FPS drop, but unlikely. On another note, it won't look any better on the higher resolution either.

PS3 games that support 1080p upscaling are almost always doing it bad, stick to 720p

As for the 360, its done by hardware and not software, so you never get problems

let the PS3 default to whatever the game wants to display. the PS3 doesn't upscale the way the 360 does, so upscaling results are sometimes not as good.

Meh, upscaling doesn't make much a difference anyway. Maybe if it was 480p to 1080p but upscaling from 720p to 1080p is negligible imo. Some people can barely tell the difference between normal 720p and 1080p.

If you have a full 1080 resolution TV that accepts 720p then the TV would automatically upscale it anyways.

To tell you the truth, the feature was basically meant for people, for games that ran in only 720p so that they could run in 1080i on 1080i only TV's. Sony didn't really have upscaling PS3 games in mind when the designed the PS3. Sony is using the most basic form of non-processor intensive scaling.

Incase someone pulls out their PS3 out 10-20 years down the road and finds that 1080p's the new standard and most TV's no longer accept 720p...

1080p is extremely wide and ends up looking bad on most of the screens. So your screen is small.Try it with projectors n you`ill know the difference.

Comes down to the resolution of your TV and/or how well it upscales 720p. Some peoples will look better others will look worse/the same.

No it doesn't. Its not physically upping the resolution of the games output, it is simply taking the finished image/frame, and making it bigger. Think of it as a photo in your hand, if you bring it closer to your face it looks bigger, but it still has the same information on it as it did further from your face. If jaggies are there in 720p, they will still be there in 1080p. 100% garunteed.

It's actually 60" - a Samsung DLP screen 1080p HDTV.

Playing PS3 games on 1080p with an HDMI cable on that wide of a screen has a noticeable difference (slightly more noise but with less blur), compared to when I used to play them before on 720p and 1080i with component cables. :(

Keyboard Mouse in a TPS = fail. Also, most people don't have their PC hooked up to a 60" screen, or a 106" 1080p projector like the one my 360 displays beautifully on.

Ummm, not sure. BUT, the loading times are like 2 seconds faster ... not really an issue.

It dont use Blue tooth for a start, also, you can buy a wireless reciever for it (i think) Or buy a wired controller.

lol? please break down and explain this equation...

is it becuase u actually have to aim, rather than lock on targets?(yes, i know deadspace does not lock on, but im speaking in general)

from my experience with tps's on pc, gta's, max paynes's, etc were incredibly fluid and perfectly suited for kb&m

Thanks.

Play it on 720p on your TV if it supports it because changing the resolution doesn't change the way it renders. The PS3 probably renders it at 720p and upscales it to 1080p, which sometimes doesn't look good. Keep it at 720p.

[QUOTE="FirstDiscovery"][QUOTE="munu9"]Meh, upscaling doesn't make much a difference anyway. Maybe if it was 480p to 1080p but upscaling from 720p to 1080p is negligible imo. Some people can barely tell the difference between normal 720p and 1080p. Ilikemyname420
Still why not if the feature is there?

Incase someone pulls out their PS3 out 10-20 years down the road and finds that 1080p's the new standard and most TV's no longer accept 720p...

I doubt 1080p will be the standard 20 years from now. That's like saying coaxial and RCA connectors are the high end TV equipment today.

If you have a decent TV let it upscale it for you. If you have a 720P TV then you're golden (btw: for consoles 720P TVs > 1080P for most games since they are native 720P).
