That is a good list but i think 2004 might have it beat a little bit. It had more games that i was interested in.

Half llife 2 and Doom 3 and DS and PSP are the things that come to mind...also Halo 2.

1999 > 1998. Planescape: Torment.Shafftehr

As much as I like Planescape Torment. Its one if not the best WRPG let alone RPG ever. One game does not make the best year of gaming alone. Thats completely ridiculous.

Indeed, 1998 produced 4 of my top 10 favorite games. Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Suikoden 2. Even if Xenogears was the only one, it would still have been my favorite year. 1998 was a year of marvel for artistic storytelling in gaming.

By far, that was the best year in gaming. Ocarina of Time alone makes the year great, but add MGS, Half Life, Starcraft and so much more.

If Diablo 3 comes out in 2009, along with FF13, StarCraft 2, along with many other games, then that could beat 1998.

The options should be HELL YEAH

and "Your an idiot"

Seriousaly how could you say no.

Half Life-dawn of the modern FPS
Ocarina of TIme- no need to explain this one
Metal Gear Solid- one of the best PS1 games
Resident Evil 2- amazing game
Baldurs Gate 2- One of the best RPGs ever
Bajo Kazooie- One of the best platformers of all time
Starcraft- no need to explain
Grim Fandango- amazing adventure game

I mean the sheer amount of innovation, new ip, creativity, and variety and depth more than makes up for the fact that games have gotten technically more impressive. 1998 was the best year in gaming.

2001 and 2007 are up there

So are 97 and 99-00

2004 is pretty solid. But all in all 1998 is a mega beast in gaming years.

Not really.. COD4 won't last as long as Baldurs Gate or Fallout 2 or any of the others. Those will probably be murmured still, the other probably not.

Yeah it will. COD is huge man. Fallout may be more epic and beloved by us, but COD4 is a monster, it's still hugely popular and won't change for a long time.

My point is I think people will look back in 10 years at Gears, Crysis, Halo 3, Metal Gear 4, Burnout, Grand Theft Auto 4, SMG, Brawl, Metroid, Oblivion, Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, even Resistance (yeah shut up a lot of us love it, call it a cult favorite) just as fondly as we look back on Final Fantasy 7, Tekken 3, Ocarina of Time, etc. We're just a lot more jaded and spoiled because of the wealth of good games that comes out every year.

HELL NO

the difference between the big games of 98 and the big games of 07 is that the big games of 07 will show there age alot more than the 98 games do after 10 years.

98 game were ground breaking and innovators. In 07 there weren't many innovators

Halo 3 was stuff that was done before(although people should remember it as the first game on consoles to have a true community experience)

COD 4s best stuff has been done before

Super Mario Galaxy was just an extremely well designed and polished so that might stand the test of time.

Bioshock was system shock 2 but dumbed down on gameplay(still awesome)

God of War 2 has a very good combat and presentation. HOwever it wasn't very long, had a stupid cliffhanger(when are these ever good?), and generally it was great but action games always tend to get topped quick

Assassins Creed- So many flaws this will be definantly not stand the test of time

Metroid Prime 3, Crysis, World in Conflict, etc will show there flaws alot more in 10 years.

not really COD 4 seems to be a bit fadish. Where as last gen Halo 2 absolutely dominated XBOX live no matter what game came out. COD 4 took awhile to finally get over Halo 3 and after that got beat by GTA 4 for a month. Gears of War 2 will probably take over, and then the next Bungie Project. COD 5 will essentially cut the communit in half.

Metal Gear Solid 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Grand THeft Auto 4 are amazing, but I would argue that the other games will show some serious age.

A great deal of those games won't have the stopping power to stay in our minds, specially Call of Duty 4. Being a good game does not mean it will last in our hearts and mind like games I said. A good deal are good, but aren't as revolutionary, groundbreaking or memorable like 98's. Call of Duty will fade out by the next couple entries or next flashy similar game. Resistance is decent I guess, but has little staying power. Played, forgotten about, maybe occasional hiccup of its name. I guess a couple like maybe Super Mario Galaxy, MGS3 and persay CoH. There are alot of good games, some could be remembered but a good deal won't because alot of it been done before.
