I strongly disagree. Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 are easily some of the best FPS games I played. And there has been a good amount of great FPS in the last few years.

Although I agree Counter-Strike is one of the greatest FPS's of all time, but I dont think 1999 was the last great year.

Well, admittedly, as much as I wish FPSes were still like Doom and didn't need the whole "gritty anti-war all-your-friends-are-dead" plot twist crap and superpowers, Iunno. Call Of Duty's great fun online, and Return To Castle Wolfenstein was awesome too.

UT99 is the best competitive FPS ever to this day.

What about Deus Ex, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Team Fortresss 2, Portal, Halo 3, CoD4, Escape from Butcher Bay, Bioshock?

Now I know we all realize that the foundation of Yahtzee's works to extreme exaggerations of negatives to humorously deliver a criticism of a game. Thoroughly thrashing a game to the point of traumatizing even those developers who poured their hearts into the game upon endless hours of toil is his trademark and he always trives to live up to his reputation.

Yet this disposition of his I think really does help put older games into perspective.

If Fortress Forever is really a remake of TFC, then I agree definitely. Way too fast pace, and the classes are pretty unbalanced. Also I prefer the cartoony style and humor that is in TF2.

seriously. Coutner Strike, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Medal of Honor, GoldenEye, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein, Spear of Destiny, Dark Forces, Half Life, etc. are the epitome of first-person shooters. 90's FTW.

This is just as incorrect as saying UT99 is the prime, or even the 1st Doom for that matter.

They were exemplary games for their times, but games have evolved since then, just as it did after UT99.

And the point people keep missing is, they will continue to evolve ever onwards. KZ2, Halo 3, Crysis, or which ever current game you favor today, will NOT always remain the champion of the genre. They surpassed their predecessors, that's for sure. But newer games will do to them what they did to those that came before them.

It's inevitable. And I will say this again; STOP living in the past.

i have to agree with this. tf2 is an awesome game and i only have the console version.

Counter Strike was, and still is, far more competitive than any Halo, Gears, or other garbage to roam on console. 1999-2009 ftw. 10 Years of Excellence.

I'd like to see how many people still play Halo:Combat Evolved in late 2011.

In fact in general UT99 doesn't hold up IMO. Not with UT2k4jg4xchamp

Yeah, I just started playing UT2004 again recently after a 2-year hiatus (still a good number of people playing, though some gametypes are dead.)

It has me in awe even to this day. Probably the deepest multiplayer shooter of all time (certainly the deepest one I've played, and I've played pretty much everything you can imagine.) Epic needs to make a new UT game modelled after UT2004 (in terms of the movement system and weapon balance.) UT3 was a huge step backwards with how they butchered the movement system.
