1up sold, EGM to close.

According to sources at Game Set Watch this means long-running print magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly won't be along for the ride (though What They Play, run by former 1UP man John Davison, say further details will be disclosed tomorrow). This will be the last month the magazine is published, bringing to an end nearly two decades of independent, influential games editorial.

Damn...

After allowing my GameInformer subscription to lapse (Never again will any of my money be used to pad the wallets of GameStop corp. executives), I was planning on getting an EGM subscription sometime in the near future. I was initially planning to use one of the subscription cards I had after buying the December 2008 issue last month...I guess I should be glad I waited... :(

There goes one of my most trusted sources of gaming news that I've been relying on for over a decade.

This damn economy is killing the industry. I don't care if some folks believe it's "recession proof". EGM might still be around if it wasn't for this,

Never visited or read any thing from those sites.

So i cant say i care. but RIP EGM.

This is not a complete surprise. I remember reading online about a year and a half ago how the magazine had been reformated (issues became thinner).

True, but that doesnt explain why they've sacked a good number of the 1up editorial staff and killed both the podcasts and GameVideos.

No word on Shane yet, but Garnetts twitter doesnt seem to suggest he's been laid off. Hard to tell right now though.
