Sony is quite popular worldwide -- in North America though, Microsoft beats Sony 3 to 1. Japan is the only reason Sony outsold them worldwide.

Early in 2007 they cut their shipment expectation from 15 million for Q2 to 11.6, it wasn't until around July that they started shipping in force.

It's obvious why they had to cut hardware shipments, they needed to redesign the hardware or else more consoles could end up defective.

They actually sold more consoles this year than they shipped, left overs from last holiday season.

Well Sony sold 8.8 mil units this year with no killer apps... This year they have GT5 and MGS4 waiting and FF13 in Japan.... I'd say by the end of this year they will surely have surpassed 360.

PS3 will have no problem surpassing the 360 this year. No problem at all. :D :D :DRikusaki

Anyways, thinking about it, 1.5 million is making me think of huge channel stuffing. The end of the year sale numbers for Japan+US+Canada+Australia+the largest European game markets(UK, France, Germany) don't show this.

Unless Sony really has 1 million in unit sales combined from all of the minor markets, which would be a huge first for any electronics company for breaking into those markets with such large numbers.

The other option is because they are fiscal quaters, and not real yearly quarters, we could have numbers that aren't lining up right(i.e. GS interpolation vs Quarterly earnings is not the same time period.

it's not like it'll sell the same every year.... it's pretty safe to assume that it'll outsell the x360 next year by an even larger margin, how much larger? We don't know, so you can't guess how long it will take.

HOw about the fact that on January 2007, MS officially announced selling 11 million 360s from Nov. 05 launch until the end of the 06? At the begining of January 08 they released an official announcement saying they have now sold 17.5 million consoles.

Do the math...using MS's official announcements they only sold about 6.5 million 360s in 2007.

I just read the article that came out today bout the PS3 makin profit. i don't see another price drop though til the holidays for sony though. I expect a 360 drop this spring.

If it wasn't for the RRoD, the 360 would probably be up in sales. It cost them like a billion I heard, and there still in the red.

I think Sony had a good plan.

1) Advertise, Advertise, and Advertise

2) Slash prices and add a 40 gb to the market ( seeing as everyone owned PS2s)

3) Push blu ray, so they can now focus on games now

i find that kind of sad, I wonder what the lemmings arguement will be now since they had the best 07 with their online and biggest selection of games.
