2008: A very bad year for Xbox 360

Analysts will look back into this generation and see that 2008 is the turning point of the console war between PS3 and Xbox 360. It's a year when a warrior realizes its time has passed. No longer is Xbox 360 the best console. Not for casuals. Not for the hard core. Not for exclusives games. Not for multiplatform games. Not for best graphics. Not for best sound.

2008 is the year when:

1) Multiplats are now better on the PS3. The big multiplats this year: Burnout Paradise, Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Soul Caliber 4, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata. Red the reviews and previews on these games. Overall, it's clear that multiplats are better on the PS3 in 2008.

2) Exclusives are now better on the PS3. Exclusives that make their own statement in the gaming world. Grand Toursimo 5 Prologue--the most photorealistic racing game ever made. MLB: The Show--the best baseball game this generation. Metal Gear Solid 4--the most advanced game ever made on a console, receiving perfect scores from the big guns: Gameinformer, IGN, Gamespot, Famitsu, Gamepro. With Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, and Mortorstorm 2 to come, what does the 360 have in all of 2008? Gears of War 2? We must temper our expectations because Gears 2 is made on a weaker console, using last-gen DVD, and must compete against other big games in all of 2008.

3) LIVE is now NOT that much better than PSN. In fact, it can be argued that when 2008 is over, PSN is better than LIVE, which costs $50 a year. LIVE's 2 major advantages are gone: PSN now has in-game XMB and Trophies, which IGN expects to be better than Achievements. While PSN catches up with LIVE in some areas, it surpasses LIVE in other areas: multiplayer size (Resistance 2), sharing game contents among gamers, dedicated servers, web browsing, Youtube support, and HOME. All free.

4) Xbox 360's hardware becomes a liability, and I am not talking about RROD, either. Xbox 360 cannot play Blu-ray movies. It's use of DVD9 is starting to get major complaints, even from Id's Carmack. It's lack of standard HDD, makes games run less smooth, a major reason why multiplats look or play better on the PS3.

5) Xbox 360's monthly sales are the worst among all major consoles in all major territories. Do a little research, and you will agree.

Thus, 2008 brings in something really sad: The overwhelming perception that Xbox 360's glory days are over. Just as most people are now accepting that Xbox 360 will lose the console war, they will soon enough accept that Xbox 360 will not have the biggest and most advanced games as well.

It's tough to win the war when your guns (hardware) are weaker and you are losing battles (monthly sales) all over the world.

Too much fail in there to point it all out. Seriously, the PS3 gets a decent game released and all of a sudden a million threads appear suggesting ultimate ownage.

I would say that the PS3 is improving....but lets face it, the only way is up when you are at rock bottom. They had to get something right at some point.

Why is every fault with a 360 a positive for the PS3 :? ?

1) The PS3 wont have the option to play the expansion on GTA4 so how have the PS3 got the better version. Burnout and DMC4 has small advantage but nothing major. Bioshock and Eternal Sonata with all the extra development time spent on these game should be better but any game with extra development time should be better.. You just pick out a selection of games and forgot to mention that some reviews will show the 360 version of games have better reviews.

2) Off the top of my head the 360 has GTA exclusive episodes, gear of war 2, Warhammer: Battle March, Tom Clancy's: Hawx, Left 4 Dead and Fable 2 this year. Plus other games i cant remember and all the large amount of smaller but good games that get released on the 360.

3) It could be argued that if you want all the downloads on PSN then its not free. If you want the latest trailers or beta then you have to pay for the online mag. The trophies system is hardly like achievment just now as only a couple of games have trophies out. Most PSN games do not use dedicated servers.

4) The 360 doesn't have to play blu-ray movies as its a gaming console and note a movie player. Most of all games on the 360 and PS3 fits onto 1 DVD so i dont see the massive advantage to having blu-ray for a couple of games so far this gen. It might prove to be a bigger advantage over the years but right now blu-ray is hardly needed. MS is addressing the issue of lack of HDD. They are adding the option to download data if you want to. Its a optional install unlike PS3 mandatory install.

5) True but it still hasn't caught up with the 360 sales and no one know how the PS3 sales will do next year.

This year the 360 will have one of the most biggest and advanced game with Gear of War 2. Watch the trailers and read the reviews.

:lol: it certainly looks like that at the moment. But PS3 is far from dead, infact its outselling 360 console worldwide right this seccond, and by the holiday season at this rate it'll overtake the 360 with a whole year behind!

MS will make a lot of cash out of 360 software sales however, thats purely down to having the most hardcore audience of the 3 (and xbl), so if 360 win its with their games.

As far as numbers, 360 is going down. Failure rates, hardware peaks, sales, number of discs per game, not so cost-worthy online...

I agree with you, but I dont see why you had to make this post...

MS could come second though, since an RROD less 360 comes out aroud the time our warranties expire (for those of us who bought at launch) so sales will rise, or stop as people get annyoed with MS.

Eh, while I dont think 2008 is a bad year for the 360... I dont think Gears cancels out Resistance 2. It's unfair to compare RFOM to Gears because RFOM was a launch title. RFOM2 should be much more polished. But either way, a great game doesnt cancel out another. I dont know about the racing games, because I dont really enjoy racing sims, and as for Fable 2, I wont be buying it... I hate RPGs.

You forgot about Left 4 Dead though, that game is looking pretty sweet.

As far as I am concerned, its done. The gen is not a new gen anymore. Its been here YEARS. The consoles came out, they were new, they had something to prove.

If the PS3 is starting to claw back sales now, after years of being out, I don't really see it as a success. Its just people like me that already own Wii and 360's for years that are buying them up cos they are cheap and finally getting some worth while games....and could do with a blu ray player.

The 360 has better exclusives like Ninja Gaiden 2 and Gears of War 2. The only flaw the console has is the dreaded RROD.tundraknight8

Although Gears of War I agree with, I played the demo for Ninja Gaiden 2 and I was never more disguisted with a game in my life. Not to mention it was freaking boring.

PS3 did have a bad start. I mean I didn't buy mine until this year. (of course, I didn't buy ANY next-gen console until this year.)

Anyway, my point is that I can predict Xbox 360's line-up, it's so simple. 2009: More Halo and Mass Effect, 2010: Gears Of War 3 possibly, Halo Wars 2? Again more Halo? Xbox wouldn't survive without Halo. Just face it, Halo made the Xbox a success! Without Halo, Xbox probably wouldn't make it to the point it has now.

You could look at the 360 as the Instant gratiification system, but I tend to wait a little anyway for the prices to go down at least, not to mention nowadays a superior version often comes out (or an inferior version on a console I already own, thus saving myself $300.)
