(jrpg haters stay out)

okay, here i go

2008 seems like a great year for JRPGs. 2006 sucked. 2007 had some title-mainly Eternal Sonata and the much underated Blue Dragon (which did get mixed reviews by the way. lots of high 8s and 9s. then 6s from other sites. seemed like a if you like anime and traditional turn based youll like this game)

Anyway, try not to fight about the quality of the titles as i can assure you that the people who are arguing against it havent nearly looked into it enough to pass any judgement.

Okay, im trying to go in order. I will only say info i know as a fact. I do not know much about some games though.

- Lost Odyssey- 360- starring a immortal manwho is curded to live 1000 years.Setting is a mixture of the industrial past, the future, and all neat kinds of things. Definately a fantasy setting- cant properly derive what time period itd be set in. 7 hours of cutscenes of which one is CGI (and yes, it is confirmed by the japanese-english crowd that it said it was a mistranslation). Battle system is random and turn based. Battles consist of a ring timing system. Accessorries can sometimes play with the mechanism. World map is confirmed (the rumor of a static map was made from a picture of a map and names written on top of it. This was revealed to be the fast travel in the game (warp points). Game has gone golden. Due out in Japan Nov (20th?) and in the US in late January/February (english and japanese were voiced and scripted simulataneously)

- The Last Remnant- Ps3/360- (i do not have a good understaning of this game. fill me in, heres the basis of it, i think).Uses a battle system similar to FF12 and is set in a very early time period in Japan. Story involves crystals? (really, thats all i got)

- Infinite Undiscovery- 360- another real time rpg from the makers of Star Ocean. Set in a highly fantasy setting (appears to be ghosts, fairies, kings, and knights with long streaky golden blonde hair).- not much about the game is known. Interesting about this game is that it is a exclusive Square- Enix RPG for the 360. It does have development ties to MS (financial backing?)

- FF13- PS3. (im sure someone could write something much better about this than me, i havent followed this in comparison to what some people here probally have)

- Eternal Sonata- Ps3, 360- this was released back in nov. for the 360. Just thought it deserves a place here as it is a 2008 title for ps3 only owners. Read the review on gamespot for info.

(dont let this evolve into a flame war or even debate about which game is better)

FF13 will be released in Japan next year, no way in hell it'll be released in America. That is the only game in the near future that will make me completely fall in love with my PS3.

i would be highly suprized if ff13 made it out next year.. just seems unlikely that Square has that much resources to make Last Remnant publish infinite undiscovery AND finish ff13 in one year(and put all those games out with in 4-5 months of each other?) just seems kinda hard.

yea it seems cool. I dont feel like typing a summary though. It does seem pretty neat how you have a sand demon that basically evolves and the game focuses on emotion.

Are you guys thinking cartoon, cell shaded, enhanced (meaning haloish- kind of in between) or realistic graphics?

And i hope it is an action rpg as in Kingdom Hearts like

06 sucked? 2006= Wild Arms 4, Drakengard 2, Grandia III, Tales of Legendia, Kingdom Hearts II, Shadow Hearts From the New World, Suikoden V, Atelier Iris 2, FFXI expan, Disgaea 2, Valkyrie Profile 2,Final Fantasy XII, Phantasy Star Universe, SMT Devil Summoner, Tales of the Abyss.

That's just ps2 alone for 2006, do you even know what good rpgs are if you think 2006 sucked.

And 07 just being ok? Persona 3, AR Tonelico, Wild Arms 4, Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire, Atelier Iris 3. And these are just a few ONLY on the ps2.

You must not know alot about JRPGs if you call those bad years.

My personal favorite of 2006, Valkyrie Profile 2.

Since it's all about love in this thread, I'll try to win over some Playstation 3 fans and convince them that it's worth atleast owning an Xbox 360 Arcade in 2008 and onwards.

I don't know where to start, I guess Lost Odyssey should be first since it's coming out in February.

Kaim Argonar has been sentenced to live for a thousand years and engage in increasingly bloody and merciless battles with warring empires. Lost Odyssey follows his progress through multiple generations, as the stoic warrior bears witness to the deaths of his closest friends. Against the background of this tragic story, humankind has acquired the use of corrupt magical powers, and civilization is swiftly approaching "a mystical industrial revolution." While endowing immortality and godlike powers on those who master its arts, the desire for magic has corrupted the voracious multitudes and kindled an unending war.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/lostodyssey/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-38688487&pid=928334

Battle system:

Lost Odyssey relies on random enemy encounters, but since there are many event-based battles, Mistwalker is reducing the number of redundant combat encounters and putting more depth in each battle instead. Though there are a total of nine playable characters, you may only take a maximum of five party members into battle with you.

Lost Odyssey's battle system is turn based with some real time elements. Lost Odyssey operates on the same turn-based principles as Final Fantasy. A turn indicator in the lower left-hand corner of the screen shows the order in which the characters will attack. Certain attacks, such as a powerful magic spell, will take a bit longer to charge than a standard physical attack. During a battle, for example, Kaim was able to attack with his sword multiple times while Sarah prepared a fiery magical assault.

There is another element in this game when a melee attack is executed, a contracting ring onscreen will appear, and letting go of the right trigger at the right moment will give the damage dealt a boost. In the game's menu, you can equip one of around 150 combat rings that you'll be able to find around the game world onto each character. These rings have a variety of power levels and elemental affinities. So if a character is equipped with a fire-based weapon, you can match him/her up with a fire-based combat ring for a little extra damage. During combat, you can use these rings by holding the right trigger while attacking. If you do so, you'll see two large rings appear on the screen, the larger of which will quickly shrink to overlap with the smaller. If you hit the switch just as the two rings overlap, you'll be able to execute a more powerful attack than you normally would.

Kaim (and possibly the other immortals) won't actually be learning new skills. He recalls them instead (he's been around so long he's forgotten quite a few things). The skills and moves Kaim "recalls" throughout the course of the game will depend on what accessories he has equipped. Regarding equipment in Lost Odyssey, there's only weapon, ring and accessory. Apparently, no armor..

Lost Odyssey will employ a wall system, which will require players to ensure that the front guards protect the rear. The invisible wall reduces the amount of damage your party takes, but it can be broken down. There is a gauge on the top-right corner of the battle sequences that represents how much protection the front row gives to the back row with their wall system, which goes up as the characters in front deal and receive damage, and drops as the rear characters take damage. The higher the meter goes, the more effective the protection is, and the less damage characters in the back take. Enemies will also use these formations and will rely on the timing based physical attack system (mentioned above), spells, and items to breech those walls.

The menu consists of the options Attack, Defend, Magic, and Item.

Magical attacks in Lost Odyssey are much more powerful than physical attacks, so sorcerers must be protected with the front line while they do their own thing. Spells are divided into White Magic, Black Magic, Spirit Magic and Composite Magic.

Another element in Lost Odyssey is the ability for immortal characters to gain new skills by absorbing powers from mortal characters. Apparently, only mortal characters can level up and learn magic. You have your basic type of elemental magic (fire, water, earth and wind) but you can also combine them to create spells with different attributes. The only way to give these spells to your immortal comrades is by first leveling up the spell in a mortal and then passing it on. So while you can farm out the best spells from your mortal friends, you'll need to continuously level them up as well or else you'll fall behind the enemies.

There are certain battles where you are able to use the objects in the area during battle. An example is shown where a crane holding a number of explosives was conveniently suspended above a mammoth black monster. After damaging the crane, the crane released its payload and damaged the beast. The Microsoft representative stated that these types of battles would occur about once an hour during normal gameplay.

It was asked if it was possible to beat the boss monsters the old fashioned way by just hacking away at the beast with swords and spells. You can, but your party must be strong enough to do so.

Another feature in Lost Odyssey's combat is during boss battles, your party members will discuss tactics in a manga-esque fashion like a pre-battle cutscene.

Sakaguchi hinted that acquired skills will be needed to equip accessories and that obtainable skills will vary between mortals and immortals in the game.

He also said that item synthesis would be in the game and would work through combining items infused with magical powers along with a basic weapon. If you look closely at the E3 07 trailer, you can see Kaim's sword glow green. And in Microsoft's pre-TGS Lost Odyssey demonstration, Kaim's sword is on fire. These could be an example of item synthesis.

In Lost Odyssey, immortal characters don't die during fights. If Kaim or another immortal character falls in battle, he is automatically revived after a few turns. Mortal characters, however, will still need to be revived via spell or item. If the entire party is passed out at the same time, you lose the game and restart from a save point.

Here's some information on who's putting the game together.

Producer - Hironobu Sakaguchi

Producer - Hiroshi Kawai

Scenario - Kiyoshi Shigematsu

Music - Nobuo Uematsu

Character Design - Takehiko Inoue

Director - Daisuke Fukugawa

Concept Artist - Hideo Minaba

Concept Artist - Christian Lorenz Scheurer

I'm sure a couple of those names you'll recognize, but who are the others?

http://squarehaven.com/people/?association=Mistwalker

http://squarehaven.com/people/by-game/?gid=287

Art is being overseen by Takamasa Ohsawa of the Shadow Hearts series. A current Mistwalker resident, Final Fantasy XII's Hideo Minaba is contributing concept art, while also in charge of character design for the Nintendo DS title Archaic Sealed Heat. Conceptual designer Christian Lorenz Scheurer, having worked on diverse Square projects in the past, is among the art staff. An illustrator for big-budget films like The Matrix and The Fifth Element, he was instrumental in the design of Final Fantasy IX and The Spirits Within, while providing matte art for Square's entry in The Animetrix. Characters for the game have been designed by famous manga illustrator Takehiko Inoue, known for Slam Dunk and Vagabond. On the aural side, Nobuo Uematsu will be following up his irreverent Blue Dragon soundtrack with a soberer foray into orchestral and electronic compositions.

Mistwalker is working with Feeling Plus on the game's development, a company formed by Microsoft with the raison detre of developing a killer app for the XBox 360. In an interview with Kiziko.com, Sakaguchi explained that Hiroshi Kawai had a hand in determining the XBox 360 as the rightful destination for the game. Kawai is the current lead developer of the Xbox 360 games division in Japan, but his background is in coding--he served as main programmer on Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy IX.

Seth Balmore is a woman who, like Kaim, has lived for 1,000 years. Undaunted by life, she has a strong will to not give in to the memories of the past, and faces the mystery of her own immortality.

Ming is the woman in blue on the ship shown in the TGS 07 trailer. She is the queen of one of the kingdoms and is also an immortal.

Sarah is the woman with the librarian glasses you saw in the trailer. She is mortal, and appears to have a connection with the children Mack and Cook.

Sed is the old man in red who uses the gun. Apparently, he is the son of Seth Balmore.

The first picture of the world map.

Along with this heightened game speed, the player will be able to jump to previously visited areas; however, if the player so wishes they will be able to walk the distance as well.

Pretty much in the beginning the map will be like Final Fantasy X, put when you get your vehicle you can freely explore the world. I believe it can submerge as well.

ok I have to show atleast something of Infinite Undiscovery before I go.

Those of you who are familiar with tri-Ace games should be in for a treat. Some gameplay of the current build.

http://www.gamespot.com/video/935661/6179449/infinite-undiscovery-official-movie-1

Infinite Undiscovery is a Japanese Role Playing Game being developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix.

Situational Battles
Players will be confronted with a variety of dramatic "situational battles" such as executing a daring escape while a gigantic ogre follows in hot pursuit, or waging battle amidst towering tidal waves. The dynamic environments change and respond in real-time to player commands, creating an entirely new experience never before seen in the genre.

A Seamless World and Real-time Action Combat, exploration, and other actions all take place within the same environment, seamlessly shifting between each game facet. Battles are carried out in real-time, bringing the vibrant fighting sequences of the STAR OCEAN series out of the traditional battle screen into a beautiful and lush environment.

Speaking with Weekly Famitsu, tri-Ace president Yoshiharu Gota, producer of Infinite Undiscovery, shared first details on the game.

Infinite Undiscovery has been in the works for a long time. "The framework itself has been cooking from far back," explained Gota. "Probably over 10 years ago. I've thought about making it into a game many times in the past, but there were hardware limitations and other hurdles, so this was unable to be realized. This time, we started off with the thought that the Xbox 360 would be able to realize our plans."

So what exactly is this great plan that Gota has been holding back all this time? "It's a framework that began with some doubts I've had in the course of making various RPGs. I've gotten the feeling that for the user, playing RPGs has gradually become like work. So, I considered what is the true nature of an RPG. It's the player acting out the role of a character in the virtual world of a game, enjoying the process of worrying and getting lost. I wanted to make a game that pulls on the excitement of a true RPG."

In case you were wondering, Gota is fully aware that "Undiscovery" is not in the standard English dictionary. He shared with Famitsu a detailed breakdown of how starting with "Cover," he got "Discover" by adding "Dis," and then added the "Un." With the two negatives, he feels the word has a certain vagueness about it

"Discovery is a major key word for this game," he explained.

Yes I realize that I'm hyping two Xbox 360 JRPGs, because those are the JRPGs that need the hype.

They're both going to be great games, and I simply don't want them to be over looked.

So if anything that you've seen here even remotely interests you, it's worth noting the Xbox 360 is only $349 and comes with Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Also a 20GB Hard Drive which should be more than enough if all you want to do is play JRPGs. Or there's the Xbox 360 Arcade if money is a big factor, it's $279 and comes with a 256MB memory card.

I don't mean to imply that it should be your main console, I'm just saying there's enough reason to justify a purchase this generation vs the original Xbox which didn't have any JRPGs. Thanks for reading!

Not so good, only 4-5 RPGs every year is not good, I think games are shrinking, but I think there will be more than 5 RPGs next year at least for PS3 ( Japanese developers support).

Hey guys, please don't leave out Tales of Symphonia for the Wii. I think it is 08, but I'm not sure.

Anyone who played the first game for the Cube and is a JRPG lover, did love that game, and that game is the main reason I got a Wii, I don't care what gamespot gives it, because they are biased against traditional japanese RPGs and SRPGs who don't try anything new.

They don't realize a lot of us JRPG'rs are just converted book fans and go in deep for a great story.

Don't care for reviews, they don't mean much to me.

The Last Remnant:

The Last Remnant is set in an island named Eulam which contains different of humanoid races. The game revolves around "Remnants", strange artifacts which vary in shape and sizes. Remnants can range from Machines and weapons to monsters. These Remnants have been the cause of many of wars throughout the history of the games world. Rush Sykes, who is said to be a classic J-RPG characte, is on a mission to save his sister who has been kidnapped by an evil organisation [No further details on this organisation have been revealed], he then finds himself in a global war over, of course, Remnants.

Remnants are they key to every element in the world. Humans came into contact with the Remnants over 1000 years ago. Because Remnants are so powerful and so rare, they are priceless. According to Square Enix, they still "cannot even disclose if remnants are machines, structures, or living breathing things." So while we can't exactly define a Remnant, it is safe to say that people want them badly and will do alot to get hold of one. The game is fueled by this thirst for remnants which is the cause for the wars and turmoil.

The Last Remnant Gameplay:

The details on The Last Remnant's Battle system are rather scarce, however we do have a few details. The look of the game has been compared to Dynasty Warriors. The player will control the main character and other soliders within a "team" [or a Union] and battle up to 70 enemies per fight using a turn based system, however there will be no random encounters whatso ever. Different ****s of solider will have different abilities and will be best utilized in different situations.

Fights are "monitored" by the morale meter. This meter shows the morale of both sides, your allies and your enemies. The meter changes as the fight changes, for example in the demo shown at the Square Enix Party 2007 a very large monster arrives at the fight which puts your allies morale down because its worrying to see such a powerful monster, however once this monster is defeated the meter will restore on your favor. Another main point of the battle system is that it will feature a on-screen button pressing sequence which will behave like the cutscenes in Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill: Origins where the player has to press buttons corresponding to what is shown on screen to execute certain moves or defensive measures. This feature can also be releated to the reaction command which is often used in Kingdom Hearts II, another Square Enix game. Judging by the real-time battle screenshot above, it looks like Chain's will be in the game. This will either gain the player more money, experience or better items as more and more enemies either of the same type or in a certain amount of time are defeated.

Yes Lost Odyssey should be a pretty good game. Too bad it's coming out for the wrong system, the weapon synthesis changing your your weapons looks sounds really cool though.

As for cutscenes, I heard it was 20 hours, and I also heard there's a 34 chapter book you're supposed to read. Any info on that?
